A GPS tracker worn on a collar can report location to an app while it is fitted, charged and connected. They serve different purposes, so a tracker does not replace a microchip—and a microchip does not provide live tracking.
What’s the difference between a cat microchip and a GPS tracker?
| Question | Microchip | GPS tracker |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Identify a found cat | Report a cat’s location while the device is worn and working |
| How it helps | A vet, shelter or other finder scans the chip to retrieve its ID, then uses the associated registry to contact the owner. AAHA explains the scan-and-registry process. | The owner checks an app or receives an alert, subject to the tracker’s location and communications conditions. The Associated Press describes how pet trackers work. |
| What it depends on | A readable chip, a scan, the correct registry and current owner contact details | Secure fit and retention, battery power, GPS reception and the communications link required by the model |
| If the collar comes off | The implanted chip remains | The tracker can be lost or removed with the collar |
| Does it replace the other? | No | No |
Can I track my cat via their microchip?
No. A standard pet microchip is not a GPS device and does not transmit the cat’s whereabouts. It stores an identification number linked to a registry record. A person who finds the cat must take it to someone with a scanner; the chip number can then be used to look up the owner’s contact details. Cats Protection’s 2025 guidance answers, “Can I track my cat via their microchip?” with “No.”
Keep the registry record current
Ask your vet or check your paperwork to find which database holds your cat’s chip record. Confirm that the phone number and address on that record are current, and contact the registry promptly if your cat goes missing. A chip can only help reunite you if it can be read and the associated record points to you.
Will a GPS tracker help me find my cat?
It can give you a useful location clue while your cat is wearing a working tracker. Trackers generally use GPS to estimate location and a cellular or Wi-Fi connection to send information to an app. The device must be fitted securely, have battery power, and have the reception and communications needed to report. Coverage, update behavior and battery performance differ by model and location; weaker signal can increase battery drain. The AP’s June 19, 2025 report discusses these general limitations, but its category-level observations should not be treated as specifications for every tracker.

A tracker is not a barrier that keeps a cat in a safe area. Some products can alert an owner when a pet leaves a virtual boundary, but the alert does not prevent the cat from leaving. In the AP report, Tractive executive vice president for North America Andrew Bleiman said a tracker is “not going to keep your pet in the backyard”; that is a vendor executive’s statement, not an independent finding.
Which should you choose?
Keep the microchip for identification
A microchip can still identify your cat if it is found without its collar or tracker. In its July 10, 2026 update, AAHA attributes to AVMA a reunion rate of 38.5% for microchipped cats, compared with 1.8% for cats without microchips. Those are microchip-associated figures, not a comparison with GPS trackers or a guarantee of recovery for an individual cat.

Consider a tracker if location information is useful
A tracker may help you look for your cat before someone finds it, provided it stays on and can report its location. Before choosing one, compare its size and fit for your cat, how securely it stays attached, coverage where your cat roams, battery behavior, app features and any recurring subscription. Check model-specific instructions and current service terms rather than assuming trackers share the same performance or costs.
Use both for different jobs
The practical choice is not necessarily one or the other: the microchip supports identification if your cat is found, while a tracker can provide location information when it is being worn and working. These mechanisms complement each other, but neither guarantees that a missing cat will be recovered. The AP’s June 2025 report names Tractive, Jiobit and Pawfit as brands offering trackers for cats and dogs; that is not a product evaluation or a current recommendation.

- Keep checking for updates and follow up with the people and organizations you contacted.
Microchipping rules depend on where you live
Cats Protection’s 2025 guidance says owned cats in England must be microchipped and registered on a compliant database. That statement is specific to England; do not assume the same legal requirement applies in another part of the UK or elsewhere. Check current official rules for your location.
UK cat microchipping figures
Cats Protection’s Cats Report UK 2025 estimates that 74% of UK cats were microchipped in 2025, down from 75% in 2024. The report says 22% were not microchipped and 4% of owners were unsure; it estimates that more than 2.6 million UK cats may still be without a microchip. These are UK estimates, not figures for other countries.
