En agosto de 2024, un vehículo submarino filmó miles de tiburones de Port Jackson agrupados sobre el fondo de Beagle Marine Park, en el estrecho de Bass, al sur de Australia. Estaban a unos 65 metros de profundidad y el grupo parecía estar compuesto solo por hembras. La escena recuerda a una alfombra viva, pero no se conoce con certeza por qué se congregaron ni se ha publicado un recuento exacto.
Qué muestra el vídeo de los tiburones
Las imágenes se captaron durante una expedición de regreso a Beagle Marine Park, un área marina gestionada por Parks Australia. Un vehículo operado remotamente (ROV), desplegado desde el buque de investigación MRV Ngerin, envió las imágenes al equipo a bordo. El ROV, construido por Boxfish Robotics en colaboración con el Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), llevaba siete cámaras. Marine and Coastal Hub, 2024.
El investigador del IMAS y líder de la expedición, Jacquomo Monk, describió la escena así: “There were thousands of sharks tightly packed like a carpet spread across the seafloor.” «Había miles de tiburones muy apretados, como una alfombra extendida por el fondo marino». «Miles» es la descripción del equipo, no un conteo censal: el comunicado no da una cifra precisa.
Qué especie eran

¿Estaban durmiendo?
El comunicado señala que los tiburones de Port Jackson descansan durante el día y buscan alimento por la noche. Eso hace posible que algunos animales estuvieran descansando, pero el vídeo y la información publicada no establecen que todos estuvieran dormidos ni que el descanso explique la congregación. Tampoco permiten confirmar qué hacía cada tiburón en el momento de la filmación.
Por qué se reunieron tantos tiburones
La explicación no está confirmada. El grupo parecía estar formado solo por hembras; Monk señaló que los machos y las hembras suelen vivir separados, salvo durante el apareamiento. Propuso que las hembras quizá se alimentaban de vieiras de la zona antes de desplazarse al norte para poner huevos, pero lo planteó como una posibilidad, no como una conclusión sobre este grupo.

Como contexto, los tiburones de Port Jackson se aparean a finales del invierno en zonas costeras menos profundas y depositan cápsulas de huevos espirales sobre los arrecifes. Ese ciclo reproductivo encaja con la hipótesis de Monk, pero no demuestra que las hembras filmadas estuvieran preparándose para poner huevos ni que esa fuera la razón de su presencia en el parque.

El equipo había observado tiburones en una zona parecida durante el primer estudio del parque, seis años antes, en 2018. Ese estudio reunió decenas de miles de imágenes y cientos de vídeos; el comunicado de 2024 indica que registró más de 60 especies de tiburones y otros peces en arrecifes de profundidad intermedia. La observación anterior no confirma por sí sola que la reunión actual ocurra regularmente ni que responda a una causa concreta.

Beagle Marine Park también es una zona de alimentación importante para aves marinas que crían en islas cercanas, según el mismo comunicado. Esa función forma parte del valor ecológico del área, pero no explica por qué se agruparon los tiburones.
