The Mintakawa automatic litter box is a compact, semi-enclosed self-cleaning unit that the Cats.com review describes as best suited to kittens and medium-sized cats. The reviewer scored it 2.8 out of 5 overall and found mixed buyer feedback, so it is a reasonable choice only for a small cat, a household that accepts some hands-on cleaning, and a clumping clay litter. Before you buy, confirm exactly which Mintakawa model a listing sells. The published material describes different cleaning mechanisms and weight limits, and the manuals we located do not confirm that they cover the same unit as the review.
Who this unit suits, and who should look elsewhere
- Good fit: kittens and small-to-medium adult cats, households that can tolerate a few minutes of manual upkeep, and owners who want app-based weight and visit tracking.
- Poor fit: large cats, multi-cat homes that need a box to keep up with heavy use, owners who expect hands-off odor control, and anyone using non-clumping or pellet litter.
- Uncertain fit: cats near the bottom of the weight range, because the specifications for the reviewed unit and the manuals differ (see the next section).
Which Mintakawa model are you looking at?
This is the most important question before any buying decision. The Cats.com review, last updated June 1, 2026, calls the cleaning method rake-based in its introduction, then refers to the interior as a drum and a washable drum later in the text. It lists a rake-based sifting system alongside those drum references. Rather than pick one explanation, treat the mechanism as unresolved until the product listing you are buying confirms it.
The Mintakawa manuals we located describe drum or rotating-chamber products. They are not confirmed to be the exact model in the review, and their specifications differ from one another and from the review. The table below keeps each source’s figures separate so none is applied to a unit it does not describe.
| Specification | Cats.com review (updated June 1, 2026) | Manual for model 500C-DIY-2 (Manuals+) | Mintakawa Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box manual (Device.report, updated July 3, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cleaning mechanism | Rake-based in the introduction; drum in later text | Drum / rotating chamber | Removable drum |
| Cat weight range | 3.5–15 lb | 3.5–20 lb | 3.3–15 lb |
| Unit dimensions | not stated | 18.23 × 19.84 × 22.44 inches | 463 × 504 × 570 mm |
| Unit weight | not stated | 22.3 lb | 7.5 kg |
| Entry opening | 12.8 × 8.66 inches | not stated | not stated |
| Waste drawer capacity | 6 liters | not stated | not stated |
| Noise | 36 dB peak reading, as reported by the reviewer | not stated | not stated |
| Connectivity | App connectivity reported | 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | not stated |
Two practical rules follow. If a listing does not match the review’s description, the review’s findings may not apply to it. And if the weight range is the deciding factor, use the figure from the manual for the model you actually buy, not a figure from another Mintakawa product.

Cat size and fit
The reviewer’s test household had two adult cats. The smaller cat used the unit comfortably. A 17-pound cat, however, appeared cramped and repeatedly entered and backed out, which is consistent with the review’s advice that the unit suits smaller cats. Because the review’s weight range (3.5–15 lb) is the one most likely to match your cat, check your cat’s current weight against it and leave some margin.
Weight matters for a second reason. The Device.report-hosted manual states that cats below 3.3 lb may not be detected and could be at risk. That warning belongs to that manual’s model and is not a universal rule for every Mintakawa unit, but kittens and very small cats should be checked against it before purchase.

What the reviewer found
How the testing was done
The Cats.com review states that Amy Brown-Towry and the review team tested the unit in a two-cat household with adult cats. They assessed setup, noise, cleaning performance, cycle operation, waste separation, odor control, litter tracking, maintenance, footprint, and the cats’ reactions. The findings in this article are the publisher’s account of its own testing. We did not test the product ourselves, and the scores below are the reviewer’s, not independent measurements.

| Category | Cats.com score (out of 5) |
|---|---|
| Overall | 2.8 |
| Ease of cleaning | 2.5 |
| Odor control | 2 |
| Appearance | 4 |
| Construction | 2.5 |
| Price | 3 |
The strongest mark is appearance. The weakest are odor control and ease of cleaning, which are the two areas where daily ownership is most likely to be felt.
Cleaning and odor
The scores and buyer comments point the same way. Reported complaints include litter that does not return to the front of the unit, smearing, a small interior, and more manual cleaning than buyers expected. If you plan to rely on the automatic cycle, budget for periodic hands-on attention to the drum and the litter area, and expect odor to need active management rather than being contained by the mechanism.
Rank #4
- MULTI-SENSOR MONITORING: Automatic cat litter box uses 7 infrared sensor sets, 1 front radar pedal, and 3 Hall sensor pairs to monitor cat activity and unit status during cleaning.
- CHAMBER FIT CHECK: Self cleaning litter box is designed not to rotate when the litter chamber is not correctly seated, adding an installation check before the cleaning cycle.
- MECHANICAL STRUCTURE: Automatic litter box pairs electronic sensing with a half-gear physical structure, adding a mechanical boundary during movement.
- OPEN-TOP VISIBILITY: The self cleaning cat litter box open-top design gives cats a clear view of their surroundings while making the litter chamber and unit status easy to check.
- 3-BUTTON CONTROL: The automatic litter box self cleaning system uses 3 physical buttons for routine commands with no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or app pairing required.
Noise, app, and tracking
The review reports a 36 dB peak noise reading and says the unit runs quietly enough for some buyers, who also praise app connectivity. The app tracks weight and bathroom visits. The Mintakawa website describes this as a way to “monitor your cat’s weight and bathroom habits right from your phone.” That is brand language, not independent evidence about health outcomes. Treat weight and visit logs as a convenience for spotting changes, not a diagnostic tool.

Cats.com says the reviewed unit is designed for clumping clay litter and that non-clumping or pellet litter is not recommended. Standard clumping litter is the one that buyers in the review reported using. Because the listing and manuals can differ, confirm the litter instruction in the current product listing before you buy a large supply.

Setup, placement, and maintenance
The steps below combine instructions from the manuals. They are specific to those manuals’ models, so compare them with the instructions included with your unit.
- Place the unit on a hard, level, horizontal surface. The 500C-DIY-2 manual advises against carpet or another soft surface, and the Device.report-hosted manual says the unit should sit on a hard, level surface.
- Plan for assembly time. The 500C-DIY-2 manual estimates about 90 minutes, while a separate product listing says about 30 minutes. The difference is one more reason to match the manual to your exact model.
- Use only the original 12V/1A adapter, as the Device.report-hosted manual specifies.
- Place the drum on the device before powering it on. The manual states: “For safety reasons, please place the drum on the device before powering it on; otherwise, the device will not power on.” (Mintakawa Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box manual, Device.report, updated July 3, 2026.)
- Connect the app over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, as the 500C-DIY-2 manual describes. Use the troubleshooting steps in that manual if the connection fails.
- Before cleaning or maintenance, unplug the unit. Wash the removable drum as the manual describes, and let it dry completely before reinstalling. Do not wash the electronic base with water.
The 500C-DIY-2 manual refers warranty questions to the warranty card included with the unit, and we did not establish a warranty duration from the sources reviewed.
Verdict
The Mintakawa automatic litter box can work for a small cat in a household that accepts some manual upkeep, uses clumping clay litter, and wants app-based tracking. The reviewer’s 2.8/5 rating, with its low marks for odor and cleaning, makes it a poor choice for anyone who wants a hands-off box. Large cats, multi-cat homes, and households that cannot confirm the model they are buying should look at other options first.
