The five-cat difference did not mean five kennels were ready: some spaces needed sanitizing, and a cat was on a trial adoption. Animal control officer Kris Stocker said calls about wandering cats were frequent, but the report gave no call totals or comparison period, so the increase is an attributed local account rather than a measured trend.
Why is the shelter running short on space?
Stocker described the shelter as overflowing as officers handled incoming stray cats and kittens. The report’s figures—30 cats as the shelter’s safe housing capacity and 25 already housed before the kitten pickup—are a snapshot reported by Stocker, not a current live count. Kennels awaiting sanitization and a cat on trial adoption further reduced the space available for immediate use.
The Journal-Courier report says the shelter was receiving calls about wandering cats and that Stocker was seeing strays become more common. It does not publish call logs, a baseline period, or countywide cat-population data, so it cannot establish the size or pace of any rise.
What is being done to make room?
The shelter was using adoptions, adoption events, and transfers to partner organizations to reduce the number of cats in its care. Stocker said Cass County Animal Rescue took six or seven cats the week before the report. The article gives no outcome or cost figures with which to compare these approaches.

Staff were also preparing cats for adoption by working on vaccinations and spay or neuter procedures. Staff evaluated animals before bringing them into the shelter because feline panleukopenia had affected some agencies, including Sangamon County Animal Control. Stocker said the disease was not being seen locally when the article was published. That is a time-specific statement attributed to Stocker, not independent veterinary confirmation of the shelter’s current disease status.

The report listed lack of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, sudden death, high fever, and eye secretions among symptoms associated with the disease. This list is reported context, not a diagnostic checklist; contact a veterinarian if a cat appears ill.
Stocker said an earlier Morgan County panleukopenia episode killed 18 to 19 cats. He described it as highly contagious and difficult to cure. Both the death count and description are his account as reported by the newspaper, not an independently verified outbreak record or veterinary guidance.

What can residents do?
- Ask about adoption. Contact the shelter to learn whether cats are available and what its current adoption process requires.
- Check with local rescue organizations. Partner groups may be able to take cats or help through adoption events, but availability varies.
- Confirm details before visiting. The report listed Morgan County Animal Shelter at 202 W. Oak St., open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Because those hours and address were published October 6, 2026, verify them before going.
- Seek veterinary help for a sick cat. Do not rely on a news article’s symptom list to diagnose or treat an animal.
