A Morkie is a cross between a Maltese and a Yorkshire Terrier. These tiny companion dogs can be affectionate, lively, alert, and devoted to their people—but they are not a standardized breed with predictable size, appearance, or temperament. The same litter may produce puppies with different coat textures, colors, body shapes, and adult sizes.

Morkies can fit well into many homes, including apartments, but their small bodies do not make them effortless pets. Daily coat care, dental prevention, reward-based training, companionship, and careful handling are all part of responsible Morkie ownership.

Morkie Dog Breed Guide

What is a Morkie?

A Morkie, sometimes called a Morkshire Terrier, is a Maltese–Yorkshire Terrier mix. The Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier are both toy breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but the Morkie is not a separate AKC-recognized breed and has no official breed standard.

That distinction matters. There is no single official Morkie weight, height, coat, color, body structure, or temperament. A puppy’s characteristics depend on the size and traits of both parents, its individual genetics, and whether it is a first-generation cross or comes from multiple generations of Morkie breeding.

Descriptions such as “tiny,” “hypoallergenic,” or “guaranteed to weigh a certain amount” should therefore be treated cautiously. A responsible breeder or rescue organization should describe the individual dog in front of you rather than promise that every Morkie will develop the same way.

Morkie appearance and size

Morkies are generally small dogs with a toy-dog build, but their adult measurements are not standardized. The Maltese breed standard calls for a weight under 7 pounds, with 4–6 pounds preferred, while the Yorkshire Terrier standard calls for no more than 7 pounds. Those limits apply to the parent breeds—not to every Morkie.

A Morkie may be smaller, larger, or structurally different from either parent. Puppy weight can help a veterinarian or experienced breeder estimate adult size, but it cannot predict the final measurement exactly.

Feature What a Morkie may inherit
Build A small, fine-boned or compact toy-dog body
Coat Long, fine, silky, silk-like, straight, or somewhat wavy hair
Ears Drop ears, upright ears, or an intermediate carriage
Color White, cream, black and tan, steel-blue and tan, or combinations and variations
Shedding Usually relatively low visible shedding, although no Morkie is completely non-shedding

A “teacup Morkie,” “micro Morkie,” or “tiny Morkie” is not an official size variety. These are marketing labels, not recognized classifications. Deliberately breeding for extreme smallness may increase vulnerability to injury and other problems associated with very low body weight. Smallest is not the same as healthiest.

Coat care and shedding

Both parent breeds have hair-like coats that tend to shed relatively little, so many Morkies leave less loose hair around the home than heavily shedding breeds. This does not make them hypoallergenic. Dog allergens are found in skin, saliva, urine, and other material—not only in loose hair. No dog is completely allergen-free.

If someone in your household has allergies, spend time with the specific Morkie before bringing the dog home. Reactions can vary from one dog to another, and a low-shedding coat does not guarantee a comfortable allergy experience.

Daily maintenance

A long-coated Morkie commonly needs daily brushing or combing. Fine hair tangles easily, particularly behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar or harness, and near the tail. Mats can hold moisture, debris, and irritants against the skin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Many families choose a short pet trim. This can make brushing easier, but it does not eliminate grooming. A Morkie still needs regular coat checks, bathing when appropriate, nail care, ear care, and attention to the hair around the eyes. Hair that falls across the eyes may irritate them or make it harder to notice redness or discharge.

Bathing frequency should depend on coat length, lifestyle, skin condition, and the products used. Overbathing can strip protective skin oils and contribute to dryness or itching. Use products made for dogs and ask a veterinarian about persistent odor, flaking, redness, or scratching rather than attempting to cover the problem with more frequent baths.

Morkie temperament

Morkies are often described as affectionate, confident, energetic, alert, and closely bonded to their families. These are reasonable possibilities based on the Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier, but they are not guaranteed traits of every individual Morkie.

Both parent breeds can be vocal. A Morkie may bark at people approaching the home, noises in the hallway, animals outside, visitors, or activity at the window. In an apartment, barking should be considered before adoption—not after neighbors complain.

Useful barking-management steps include:

  1. Identify the trigger instead of shouting at the dog after barking begins.
  2. Block access to highly stimulating windows when necessary.
  3. Teach a reward-based “quiet” or “settle” behavior.
  4. Provide appropriate exercise and mental activity each day.
  5. Reward calm observation before the dog escalates.

Morkies may also struggle when left alone for long periods. Separation-related distress can show up as barking, destructive or repetitive behavior, pacing, or house-soiling. A Morkie should not be chosen with the expectation that it will comfortably spend every weekday alone without preparation or support.

Exercise and enrichment needs

A Morkie is small, but small does not automatically mean low-energy. Most need daily movement plus opportunities to use their brains. Short walks, supervised fetch, trick training, basic obedience, scent games, food puzzles, and appropriately scaled agility exercises can all provide useful activity.

Exercise should match the dog’s age, fitness, health, actual size, and weather. A tiny dog can become overtired or overheated more quickly than a larger dog. Watch for slowing down, excessive panting, weakness, or reluctance to continue, and provide rest and water.

Prevent avoidable injuries. Morkies can be hurt by falls from furniture, rough play, larger dogs, and accidental handling. Do not allow repeated jumping from beds, sofas, or other high surfaces. Use ramps or steps where suitable, and supervise interactions with dogs whose size or play style could overwhelm a toy-sized companion.

Training and socialization

Morkies are often intelligent and responsive, but they may also be persistent or strong-willed. Short, consistent, reward-based sessions work better than intimidation or punishment. Punishment can increase fear, worsen barking, and damage trust.

Begin training early. Priorities include:

  • House-training and a predictable bathroom routine
  • Leash skills and walking calmly
  • Handling of paws, ears, mouth, and coat
  • Cooperation with brushing, bathing, and nail trimming
  • Relaxing on a mat or in a crate when appropriate
  • Coming when called and responding to basic cues
  • Calm behavior around visitors and household activity

The first approximately 16 weeks are an important developmental period for learning about people, animals, sounds, surfaces, grooming, and new environments. Introductions should be gradual and positive rather than overwhelming. A breeder should be able to explain how puppies are handled and socialized before going to their new homes.

House-training may take patience. Toy-sized dogs have small bladders, and inconsistent schedules can slow progress. Take the puppy out frequently, supervise closely, reward outdoor elimination immediately, and clean accidents with an enzymatic product. Avoid punishment for mistakes discovered after the fact.

Are Morkies good with children and other pets?

A Morkie can be an affectionate family companion, but its small body is vulnerable. Toddlers may hurt a dog unintentionally by carrying, squeezing, chasing, or dropping it. Larger dogs can also injure a Morkie during ordinary play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every interaction between a Morkie and a young child should have active adult supervision. Teach children to let the dog approach, avoid disturbing it while eating or sleeping, and never pick it up without an adult’s help. “Good with children” is not a guarantee for an individual dog.

The Yorkshire Terrier was historically developed as a ratter, so some Morkies may show prey-drive behavior toward rodents and other small animals. Introduce household pets gradually, use barriers and leashes as needed, and never leave a Morkie unsupervised with an animal it could chase or that could injure it.

Feeding a Morkie

There is no universal feeding amount for Morkies. Choose a complete and balanced food appropriate for the dog’s life stage, then adjust the quantity for actual weight, body condition, activity, health, and treats. A veterinarian can help calculate calorie needs. Small kibble may be easier for a toy-sized dog to eat.

Life stage Common starting point Important qualification
Puppy Three or four meals per day Very small puppies may need an individualized schedule from a veterinarian
Adult Two or three meals per day Adjust portions to body condition and activity

Toy-breed puppies can be vulnerable to hypoglycemia, particularly during the first six months. Warning signs may include weakness, unusual lethargy, tremors, collapse, or seizures. Suspected hypoglycemia is an urgent veterinary problem. Contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately rather than relying on home treatment alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not add supplements automatically. A complete, balanced commercial diet generally does not require routine supplementation unless a veterinarian identifies a specific need. Treats also contribute calories, which matters in a very small dog.

Dental care is a major priority

Dental disease is one of the most practical health concerns for small dogs. A Morkie’s small mouth can make crowding, retained baby teeth, plaque accumulation, and periodontal disease more likely, especially without regular home care.

Brush the teeth with toothpaste formulated for dogs—not human toothpaste. Aim for at least several brushing sessions per week, ideally daily if the dog will cooperate. Introduce the process gradually: first touch the lips, then briefly handle the teeth, then add a dog toothbrush and toothpaste.

Dental chews do not replace brushing or veterinary examinations. Ask your veterinarian to check for tartar, inflamed gums, loose teeth, retained baby teeth, bad breath, and difficulty chewing. Professional dental care may be recommended when home brushing is not enough.

Health concerns to discuss with your veterinarian

A Morkie is not certain to develop every condition associated with its parent breeds. However, prospective owners should understand the risks found in both lineages and ask how parents were screened.

Patellar luxation

Patellar luxation occurs when the kneecap moves abnormally out of position. Intermittent skipping, sudden lameness, or reluctance to use a leg can be signs. Both Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier breeding recommendations include patella evaluation.

Liver shunts and liver-related disease

Maltese breeding recommendations include serum bile-acid testing because of concerns such as congenital liver shunts and microvascular dysplasia. Yorkshire Terriers are also among breeds reported to have an increased incidence of portosystemic shunts. Screening is useful, but no test guarantees that a dog will never develop liver disease.

Eye problems

The Yorkshire Terrier parent club’s recommended health screening includes an ophthalmologist evaluation. Ask for documented eye-examination results for the Yorkie parent rather than accepting only a general statement that the puppy is healthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tracheal collapse

Yorkshire Terriers are among the breeds more frequently affected by tracheal collapse. A persistent, dry, harsh, or “goose-honk” cough may worsen with excitement, heat, eating, drinking, or pressure around the neck. A harness may reduce neck pressure, but it does not diagnose or treat the condition. Persistent coughing needs veterinary evaluation.

Dental disease

Small mouths, retained baby teeth, plaque, and inadequate home care can contribute to periodontal disease. Begin dental care early and include oral examinations in routine veterinary visits.

What health testing should a Morkie breeder provide?

Because there is no Morkie-specific AKC health-testing standard, evaluate the recommendations for both parent breeds. Ask for verifiable results, not just the phrase “vet checked.”

Parent Records to request
Maltese Patella evaluation, cardiac examination, and serum bile-acid testing
Yorkshire Terrier Patella evaluation and ophthalmologist evaluation
Both lineages Relevant DNA tests and additional examinations recommended by the parents’ veterinarians or breed-health organizations

Ask for the registered names or permanent identification numbers of both parents so you can independently verify results where possible. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals’ CHIC database can help when a dog is enrolled and its results have been publicly released.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A CHIC number does not mean that every test result was normal or that the dog is disease-free. It indicates that the required tests were completed and the results were made public. Read the actual results.

Morkie lifespan

Reliable Morkie-specific lifespan statistics are limited because the Morkie is not a standardized breed with one registry population and consistent breeding records. PetMD advises prospective owners to be prepared for a Morkie’s lifetime potentially to reach 15 years or more, but no individual lifespan can be guaranteed.

Genetics, responsible breeding, dental care, disease prevention, body condition, injury prevention, and timely veterinary treatment all influence longevity.

Is a Morkie suitable for apartment living?

Often, yes. A Morkie can adapt to an apartment when its needs are met: daily exercise, enrichment, grooming, training, companionship, and barking management. Size alone does not make a dog suitable for a small home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing a Morkie, consider your building’s noise rules and your schedule. A dog that is bored, under-exercised, or left alone for long periods may bark or develop other unwanted behaviors. Plan for midday companionship or a dog sitter if your routine requires extended absences.

Choosing a Morkie responsibly

  1. Meet the puppy with its mother when possible. Observe the mother’s health, behavior, living conditions, and interaction with people.
  2. Review records. Request veterinary records, vaccination and parasite-control information, and documented parent health testing.
  3. Ask about socialization. Find out how the puppies have experienced handling, grooming, household sounds, surfaces, and visitors.
  4. Be skeptical of guarantees. Exact adult size, guaranteed temperament, “hypoallergenic” status, and “teacup” health claims are not reliable promises.
  5. Consider adoption. Breed-specific and general rescue groups may occasionally have Maltese mixes, Yorkie mixes, or adult Morkies whose personalities and sizes are easier to assess.
  6. Arrange a veterinary examination. Have the new dog examined promptly and discuss vaccination, parasite prevention, nutrition, dental care, and sterilization options.

Daily Morkie care checklist

  • Brush or comb a long coat every day; check for mats.
  • Provide age-appropriate walks, play, and mental enrichment.
  • Brush teeth with dog toothpaste several times weekly, ideally daily.
  • Use a harness if appropriate and avoid pressure on the neck.
  • Prevent falls, high jumping, rough play, and unsafe interactions with larger pets.
  • Feed measured portions of a complete and balanced diet.
  • Monitor for coughing, limping, weakness, dental pain, skin irritation, or changes in appetite.
  • Keep routine veterinary examinations and recommended screening up to date.

FAQ

Are Morkies hypoallergenic?

No. Morkies often shed relatively little, but low shedding is not the same as being allergen-free. Allergens are found in skin, saliva, urine, and other material. Anyone with allergies should spend time with the individual dog before bringing it home.

How big will a Morkie get?

There is no official Morkie size range. Adult size depends on the parents, genetics, and the generation of the cross. Puppy weight can provide an estimate, but it cannot predict adult size exactly.

How much grooming does a Morkie need?

A long-coated Morkie generally needs daily brushing or combing to prevent tangles and mats, along with regular bathing, nail care, ear care, and attention to hair around the eyes. A short pet trim reduces maintenance but does not eliminate it.

Can Morkies live in apartments?

Many can, provided they receive daily activity, enrichment, training, companionship, and barking management. Apartment living may be difficult if the dog is left alone for long periods or allowed to bark at every sound.

Are Morkies good family dogs?

They can be affectionate companions, but their small bodies are vulnerable to accidental injury. Young children and Morkies need active adult supervision, and interactions with larger dogs should be carefully managed.

What health tests should Morkie parents have?

For the Maltese parent, request patella, cardiac, and serum bile-acid testing. For the Yorkshire Terrier parent, request patella and ophthalmologist evaluations. Also ask about relevant DNA tests and verify records whenever possible.

Do Morkies need dental care?

Yes. Brush their teeth with dog-formulated toothpaste at least several times per week, ideally daily. Dental chews do not replace brushing or veterinary dental examinations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line

Morkies can be charming, devoted companions for people who want a small dog and are prepared for hands-on care. Their advantages—compact size, low visible shedding, and strong attachment to their families—come with responsibilities: daily or near-daily grooming, careful dental care, consistent training, protection from injury, and attention to barking and alone-time distress.

Because a Morkie has no official breed standard, assess the individual dog and both parent lineages rather than relying on labels such as “teacup,” “hypoallergenic,” or “guaranteed size.” A well-socialized Morkie from health-conscious breeding or a carefully assessed rescue can be an excellent companion when its physical and emotional needs are taken seriously.
