Why was Mullaloo Beach closed?
PerthNow reported that authorities closed Mullaloo Beach on 15 December 2022 after a tiger shark was spotted close to swimmers. The paper said children could be seen in the surf near the shark in drone footage. It described the closure as the second in two days.
The report said the shark was “believed to be” about 2.5 metres long; it did not establish that as an official measurement. PerthNow also relayed a witness account originally given to the Daily Mail: witness John said the shark had been around for three days and passed within five metres of people. How Mullaloo’s shark warning system works
Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club says the system is managed by Surf Life Saving WA and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. It can activate in two ways:

The club lists operating hours as 5 am–7 pm from October through April and 6 am–6 pm from May through September. Following a detection, the system remains active for at least an hour as a precaution; an alarm does not necessarily mean immediate danger. - Leave the water immediately when the alarm sounds.
- Follow instructions from lifeguards or surf lifesavers on patrol.
- Check SharkSmart for current shark activity and beach alerts. Conditions and closures change, so a report from 2022 does not indicate today’s beach status.
