If your cat ate chocolate, call your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary clinic, or an animal poison-control service now—even if your cat seems fine. Have the chocolate package, your cat’s weight, the estimated amount eaten, and when it happened ready if you can. Do not try to make your cat vomit or give a home treatment unless a veterinary professional tells you to.

Is chocolate toxic to cats?

Yes. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, compounds called methylxanthines that can affect a cat’s heart, blood pressure, and nervous system. The risk depends on the product and how much was eaten.

Cocoa powder, cocoa beans, and unsweetened baking or dark chocolate generally contain more theobromine than milk chocolate. White chocolate contains very little theobromine, but no chocolate should be treated as safe: its fat and sugar may still upset a cat’s stomach, and a veterinarian should assess the specific exposure.

How much chocolate is poisonous to a cat?

There is no dependable, cat-specific dose threshold for owners to use to decide whether an exposure is safe. Chocolate products vary in their methylxanthine content, and the amount eaten, the product type, and the cat’s weight all matter. Do not try to calculate a toxic dose or wait to see whether symptoms develop; call a veterinarian or poison-control professional with the details you have.

What are the signs of chocolate poisoning?

Possible signs include:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Increased thirst or urination
  • Restlessness, agitation, or panting
  • A racing or abnormal heartbeat
  • High body temperature
  • Tremors or seizures
  • Collapse or coma in severe cases

According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, signs usually appear within 6–12 hours after ingestion; severe cases may persist for up to 72 hours. VCA notes that signs may take several hours to develop and can last several days. A cat appearing normal shortly after eating chocolate does not rule out poisoning.

My cat ate chocolate—what should I do?

  1. Call promptly. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary clinic, or an animal poison-control service for instructions. If your cat has tremors, a seizure, collapse, breathing difficulty, or marked agitation, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
  2. Gather exposure details. Tell the professional your cat’s weight, the type and estimated amount of chocolate, and when it was eaten, if known. Keep the packaging or ingredient label available.
  3. Do not treat your cat at home unless directed. Do not induce vomiting, give activated charcoal, or try another remedy on your own. Cornell advises against inducing vomiting without direction from a veterinary professional. Merck notes that activated charcoal may worsen dehydration or electrolyte problems and requires a careful clinical decision.

VCA lists Pet Poison Helpline at 800-213-6680 and describes it as a 24/7 animal poison center serving North America. Cornell lists ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435. Confirm current access, fees, and service coverage when you call; a local veterinarian or emergency clinic is also an appropriate first contact.

What is the treatment for chocolate poisoning?

Treatment is determined by a veterinary team based on the chocolate exposure, how recently it happened, and the cat’s condition. For an appropriate recent exposure in a clinically normal patient, a veterinarian may consider inducing vomiting as a decontamination measure. This is a professional procedure, not an at-home step.

If signs or complications are present, care may include stabilization, fluid and electrolyte support when needed, monitoring of heart rate and blood pressure, and treatment for cardiac or neurologic problems. Activated charcoal is not routine owner self-care; its risks and potential benefit must be assessed by a clinician.
