Following alone cannot tell you which reason applies. What separates a normal habit from a concern is whether the behavior is new or increasing, whether the cat settles when you are nearby, and whether appetite, water intake, litter box habits, or movement have changed. PetMD’s overview, written by veterinarian Hannah Hart, DVM (updated March 31, 2026), describes following as usually normal, while increased clinginess can sometimes reflect stress or illness.
The five reasons at a glance
The five explanations in this article overlap, and a cat may have more than one at once. The table below sorts them by the clues that usually separate them and by whether a veterinary visit is typically needed.
| Possible reason | Typical clues | What to check first | Veterinary visit? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Hunger or learned food seeking | Follows you toward the kitchen or food area; waits near empty bowls; seems to expect treats | Feeding times, portion sizes, and whether appetite is normal for this cat | Yes, if appetite or water intake suddenly rises or changes |
| 2. Attention, play, or understimulation | Nudges, paws, or sits on you; follows you into rooms; seems restless during the day | How much interactive play and enrichment the cat gets daily | Only if the change is sudden or appears with other symptoms |
| 3. Curiosity and exploration | Trails you through doors; watches what you do; stays alert and engaged | Whether it happens at any time of day, without signs of distress | Not usually |
| 4. Social closeness and security | Relaxed beside you; settles and rests; returns to normal when you leave the room | Whether the cat stays calm when you are out of sight | Not usually, unless distress appears |
| 5. Stress, separation distress, or illness | Following is new or intensifying; distress when alone; health changes | When the change started, household changes, and any other symptoms | Yes, when illness is possible or distress is marked |
Reason 1: Hunger or learned food seeking
A cat may follow you because it wants a meal, the bowl is empty, or it has learned that people bring food and treats. Some cats are naturally food-motivated and prefer frequent feeding opportunities. Start by reviewing the routine: when meals are served, how much is given, and whether treats are offered outside mealtimes. Reflexively adding extra food can reinforce the pattern without solving it.
A sudden, marked increase in appetite is a different situation. Increased hunger can have medical causes, and PetMD uses hyperthyroidism as an example of a condition to discuss with a veterinarian. Following alone does not point to that diagnosis, so a veterinary check is the only way to rule it in or out.

Some households find a timed feeder or a food puzzle makes feeding more predictable or gives the cat a useful task. These are optional tools. They do not address a medical cause of increased hunger.
Reason 2: Attention, play, or understimulation
Following can be a request for play, petting, or interaction, especially if the cat has few outlets during the day. A cat that spends long hours alone with little to do may treat the person it lives with as the only source of activity.

The efficient auto on/off cycle extends battery life, making it convenient for busy pet owners while ensuring your cat gets healthy, moderate exercise
- Realistic Bird Chirping: Elevate the hunt with lifelike sound. The built-in speaker emits authentic bird chirps to attract your cat's attention and stimulate their prey drive. Combined with the random motions of the butterfly and tail, it creates an irresistible and engaging play experience that keeps your cat happily chasing even when they're by themselves
Predictable, interactive play is the first step. PetMD specifically suggests a cat wand toy, and it also mentions puzzle and food-dispensing toys for enrichment. Short sessions at regular times often work better than occasional long ones, because they give the cat a pattern to expect.
Reason 3: Curiosity and exploration
Cats investigate their surroundings constantly. A cat may trail you through a doorway or into the bathroom simply to see what is happening. This is a plausible, everyday explanation. If the cat is alert, engaged, and comfortable when you leave the room, it usually does not need correcting. Keeping doors open to a few favorite rooms can reduce the sense that the cat must chase you everywhere.

Reason 4: Social closeness and security
Many cats enjoy their person’s company and feel secure nearby. PetMD describes social proximity as one possible explanation. The useful distinction is how the cat behaves between moments of contact. An affectionate cat that follows you but rests calmly, eats normally, and settles when you leave the room is showing ordinary attachment. A cat that becomes distressed when you go, or cannot settle at all, is showing something different.
Reason 5: Stress, separation distress, or illness
Stress can prompt a cat to seek reassurance, and illness can change social behavior too. Because these overlap with the other reasons, following alone does not justify a diagnosis of separation anxiety or any health problem.

Separation distress
The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine notes that criteria for diagnosing separation anxiety in cats are not clearly defined. The signs it lists for cats include inappropriate urination or defecation, persistent vocalization, changes in appetite, vomiting, excessive grooming, destructive behavior, and intense greeting when the owner returns. The important feature is distress tied to being alone. A cat that is simply close to you while you are home is not showing these signs.
Illness and pain
The American Association of Feline Practitioners’ Feline Behavior Guidelines state: “In cats, physical illness and pain are most often recognized on the basis of a non-specific change in behavior.” A new or intensifying need to be near you can be one of those non-specific changes, which is why the warning signs below matter even when the cat seems otherwise fine.

Signs that call for a veterinary visit
Book an appointment if any of the following appear alongside increased following:
- Changes in appetite or water intake
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Breathing trouble
- Abnormal walking, stiffness, or reluctance to jump or climb
- A sudden change in behavior that has no obvious cause
Any urgent or severe symptom should be handled according to veterinary advice rather than an online checklist. If the cat stops eating, cannot settle, injures itself, or seems to be in pain, contact a veterinarian promptly.
What to do next
- Write down the pattern. Record when the following started, how often and how long it lasts, what happens just before and after it, and any changes at home such as a new schedule, visitors, or a move. Merck Veterinary Manual’s behavior-history guidance uses these same details and recommends considering medical causes as part of the assessment.
- Check the basics. Confirm normal feeding times and portions, and make sure the litter box, water, and rest areas are accessible and clean.
- Add regular play and enrichment. Schedule short interactive sessions, such as a wand toy, several times a day, and offer puzzle or food-dispensing toys when the cat is alone.
- Build tolerance for absence if distress is present. The American Animal Hospital Association’s guidance on separation anxiety (updated July 14, 2026) describes gradual desensitization: start with absences short enough that the cat stays calm, lengthen them slowly, and keep the daily routine predictable. Severe distress, self-injury, or refusal to eat or settle calls for veterinary help rather than a training plan alone.
- Reward calm behavior and avoid punishment. Reward the cat when it rests or settles near you. Merck Veterinary Manual’s behavior-modification guidance cautions against punishment because it can create fear and anxiety. Gating off rooms is a reasonable management tool if it is used without frightening the cat.
- Ask before adding supplements, pheromone products, or medication. The AAHA guidance notes that supplement effectiveness varies, and advises asking a veterinarian whether a product is safe and appropriate for the individual cat before using it.
Bottom line for a cat that will not leave you alone
Following is common and often harmless. Most often it reflects food, play, curiosity, or closeness, and simple changes to routine and enrichment are a sensible first response. Treat the behavior as something to investigate when it is new, intensifying, linked to distress when you are gone, or paired with changes in eating, drinking, vomiting, breathing, or movement.
Describing the pattern to your veterinarian, with the details from the record you kept, usually makes the next step much clearer.
