Its ingredients—neomycin, polymyxin B, and bacitracin—are sometimes used topically in cats under veterinary direction, but reactions can occur and licking the ointment may cause stomach upset. For basic cleaning of an appropriate minor wound, use warm water or saline; bites, punctures, deep wounds, or signs of infection need veterinary attention.
Why Neosporin is not a do-it-yourself treatment for cats
Neosporin is a human triple-antibiotic ointment. VCA Animal Hospitals describes the combination of neomycin, polymyxin B, and bacitracin as a topical medication used in cats for surface skin infections, but its use in cats is off-label. VCA advises caution because allergic reactions have been documented. Use it only if your cat’s veterinarian has assessed the situation and told you how to apply it.
An ointment may be the wrong response to a wound that needs flushing, drainage, pain relief, or other treatment. The plan depends on the wound’s cause and depth, so an over-the-counter product is not a substitute for an examination when the injury may be serious.
Possible side effects and allergic reactions
VCA lists irritation, redness, itching, or swelling where the medication is applied. A cat can also develop sensitivity after repeated exposure. Rare but serious allergic signs include irregular breathing, rash, fever, and puffiness or swelling around the face. If you notice a reaction, stop applying the product and contact a veterinarian promptly; breathing problems or facial swelling warrant urgent veterinary help. What to use for basic wound cleaning
For a minor wound that is suitable for home first aid, VCA recommends gently cleaning with warm tap water or warm saline. These rinse the area; they are not antibiotic treatments and cannot treat a bite wound, abscess, or deeper infection. Do not apply a topical medication unless your veterinarian directs you.
- Do not use hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, soaps, herbal preparations, or tea tree oil on an open wound unless a veterinarian tells you to. These products can delay healing or may be harmful if your cat licks them.
- If the wound is bleeding, hold clean, dry gauze or a clean towel against it with steady direct pressure while arranging veterinary care.
- For veterinarian-directed wound care, follow the specific cleaning and medication instructions. Some cats need a protective collar to prevent licking or chewing.

If your cat licked or ate Neosporin
Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service for advice about the exact product and amount involved. The available guidance does not establish a safe dose for an individual cat, so do not assume a particular amount is harmless or try to predict the outcome from the amount alone.
Older Pet Poison Helpline conference material describes acute ingestion of topical antibiotic ointments as potentially causing vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain, often self-limiting. That general description is not a guarantee for your cat or a substitute for case-specific guidance. Keep the product packaging available when you call. When a wound needs veterinary care
After a cat fight or suspected bite
Contact a veterinarian after a known fight, even if you cannot see much damage. Cat teeth can leave small punctures that are hard to find under fur and may close quickly, trapping bacteria beneath the skin. An abscess or other infection can become apparent later. Heat, swelling, pain, discharge, fever, lethargy, or limping are reasons to seek veterinary attention. Treatment may require drainage and flushing, as well as medication prescribed by the veterinarian. VCA: Fight Wound Infections in Cats
For serious injury or signs your cat is unwell
Arrange prompt veterinary assessment for a deep or large wound, bleeding that will not stop, a wound near the eye, significant pain, suspected infection, or a cat that appears unwell. Apply direct pressure with clean gauze or a towel to bleeding wounds while seeking care. Bite wounds should be examined even when they look small because infection can develop beneath the surface.
