Then keep the first days calm, build predictable feeding and bathroom habits, supervise introductions to children and pets, and book a veterinary visit within the first week. This checklist applies to puppies and adult dogs; medical care and introductions should be tailored to the individual dog.
Before your dog comes home: prepare the household
Agree on responsibilities and house rules
Decide who will handle feeding, bathroom breaks, exercise, supervision, and veterinary appointments. Agree in advance about areas the dog may access, whether furniture is allowed, and the words everyone will use for cues. Consistency makes the new routine easier to understand.
Set up a safe, quiet area
Choose a place where the dog can rest without being crowded or disturbed. Dog-proof the rooms the dog can reach: put away medications, cleaners, food, small objects, and anything that could be chewed or swallowed. A baby gate can limit access while still allowing the dog to see and hear the household.
A crate is an optional management tool, not a requirement for every home. If you use one, introduce it gradually and positively so it becomes a comfortable resting place, rather than a place of punishment or forced confinement.

Gather useful essentials
- Food and water bowls, plus the food the dog currently eats, if known.
- A well-fitting collar, leash, and ID tag with current contact information.
- Grooming tools suited to the dog’s coat and needs.
- Safe chews and interactive toys for appropriate enrichment.
- A crate or baby gate if it suits your dog and home.
Choose supplies for the individual dog’s size, age, health, and comfort rather than assuming one setup works for all. AAHA’s new pet parent checklist and puppy guidance cover preparation and equipment choices.
Line up professional support
Identify a veterinarian and, if you need help with training, look for a qualified trainer who uses positive, humane methods. AAHA names CCPDT, PPG, and IAABC credentials as options to consider. Ask about the trainer’s methods and experience with your dog’s needs; credentials are one factor, not a substitute for a good fit.
What to do on the first day
Keep the welcome quiet
Limit visitors and let the dog explore at their own pace. Speak softly, avoid crowding or forcing interaction, and make sure the safe area remains available. A newly arrived dog may be withdrawn or cautious; respond to its signals rather than expecting immediate affection or confidence. The BC SPCA’s advice for bringing home a new dog also emphasizes calm exploration and positive early experiences.

Start with simple, predictable needs
Show the dog where water is and take it to the bathroom area. Keep meals and bathroom breaks calm and consistent, using any information you have about the dog’s existing routine. Notice whether the dog is eating, drinking, and eliminating; those observations will help you describe changes to the veterinarian.
Quiet companionship can be reassuring without demanding attention. AAHA quotes dog behavior consultant Emma Judson: “By trailing around after you or being with you in whatever room you are in, your dog learns that you do a lot of very dull things.”
Build routines and start training gently
Make bathroom opportunities predictable
Take the dog out after meals, naps, and play, and use the same elimination location when practical. Reward the behavior you want as soon as it happens. Accidents are part of adjustment: clean them up without scolding or drawing attention to them.

Keep early training short and positive
Begin with name recognition and ordinary relationship-building, rather than expecting instant obedience. Short, positive sessions are easier to fit into a new dog’s day. Avoid punishment-based training; if a behavior concern is difficult to manage, seek help from a qualified professional. AAHA’s guide to choosing a dog trainer outlines credentials to consider.
Preserve familiar habits for an adult dog
If you are bringing home an adult dog, ask the previous caregiver or organization what food the dog eats and when it is fed. Keeping familiar routines where possible can make the transition more predictable; discuss any planned food or schedule changes with your veterinarian. The AKC’s guidance on bringing home a new dog recommends asking about current food and feeding times.
Introduce children and other pets safely
Children need supervision and a dog-free retreat
Never leave a child unsupervised with a dog, including a familiar family dog. Teach children to give the dog space, notice signs of discomfort, and avoid disturbing it while eating or resting. Keep the dog’s safe area child-free so it can disengage.

Take introductions to resident dogs slowly
Use controlled, supervised interactions and watch for signs of stress. Feed dogs separately, provide each with space to rest, and do not leave them together unsupervised until you have a sound basis for doing so. If either dog seems overwhelmed, increase distance and slow the process.
Give cats escape routes
Let a cat observe from elevated spots and retain routes to areas the dog cannot reach. Do not force close contact; the cat should be able to leave or watch from a safe distance.
Be cautious about puppy socialization
Ask your veterinarian when and how a puppy can safely meet other dogs, considering its health and local risks. Until then, calm observation of everyday sights and sounds without pressure can help a puppy encounter the world at a manageable pace. AAHA’s puppy socialization guidance discusses gradual, positive experiences.

Book a veterinary visit within the first week
Arrange an appointment within a few days to a week after adoption. Bring any available medical records and information about the dog’s previous care. Discuss an individualized plan that may cover:
- Vaccinations and boosters, based on the dog’s history and local risks.
- Parasite prevention appropriate to the dog and your area.
- Microchip status and how to update its registration.
- Spay or neuter history and any follow-up needed.
- Questions about appetite, bathroom habits, behavior, or a food transition.
There is no single vaccination or preventive schedule that fits every dog; the veterinarian should account for the dog’s history, health, and location. CDC guidance for adopted animals also recommends a veterinary visit within a few days to a week: CDC: Healthy Pets, Healthy People.
Update identification and plan for unexpected costs
Check that the collar tag has current contact details and that the microchip registration is linked to the right phone number and address. Cornell’s guidance on bringing home a new dog also recommends adapting the home to the dog’s needs, including mobility or noise sensitivity.
As part of household planning, consider whether pet insurance or a dedicated emergency savings fund better fits your circumstances. These are alternatives to investigate, not a recommendation for a particular policy or provider.

AAHA’s rescue-dog guidance describes the “3-3-3 rule”: the first three days, three weeks, and three months as broad stages people may use to think about adjustment. It is a rule of thumb, not a measured outcome or a timetable every dog follows. Some dogs settle sooner; others need more time or professional support. Let the dog’s behavior and needs guide your pace.
For adult dogs in particular, maintaining familiar routines and making adjustments for individual sensitivities can help make the home more comfortable. See AAHA’s rescue-dog guidance.
