Nimesulide is the veterinary painkiller behind the latest warning about vulture deaths in India. It is not the only danger: diclofenac, ketoprofen and aceclofenac have also been identified as harmful to vultures. When birds feed on carcasses of treated livestock, drug residues can poison them.
Why nimesulide is a concern
India’s catastrophic vulture decline was linked to veterinary diclofenac. Conservation reporting now identifies nimesulide as another painkiller highly toxic to vultures. BirdLife International described it in 2025 as “a widely used veterinary painkiller that’s highly toxic to these threatened birds.”
The risk comes from a food chain: a livestock animal receives a drug, residues remain in its body when it dies, and vultures may be exposed when they feed on the carcass. A drug used to relieve pain in cattle can therefore threaten scavenging birds even when the medicine was not given to them.
The warning is part of a wider problem, not a one-drug story. Nature India reported in 2024 that four of the 14 NSAIDs used in India—nimesulide, diclofenac, ketoprofen and aceclofenac—are harmful to vultures. NSAIDs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, a class that includes many medicines used to treat pain and inflammation.

How the four drugs threaten vultures
| Drug | What conservation evidence says | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Diclofenac | Linked to India’s original mass vulture die-off. India prohibited its manufacture for animal use through a 2008 notification, according to a 2016 Press Information Bureau release. | Veterinary use can leave residues in livestock carcasses that poison feeding vultures. |
| Aceclofenac | A 2022 peer-reviewed study found that domestic water buffalo rapidly convert recommended-dose aceclofenac into diclofenac. | A substitute drug can recreate the same toxic residue pathway rather than remove the risk. |
| Ketoprofen | Identified as harmful to vultures in Nature India’s 2024 account of evidence on NSAIDs used in India. | It is one of several veterinary painkillers that can expose vultures through treated livestock carcasses. |
| Nimesulide | Identified as highly toxic to vultures by BirdLife International in 2025, and as harmful in Nature India’s 2024 report. | Its emergence as a threat shows why controls cannot focus on diclofenac alone. |
The sources cited here do not establish a comparable residue duration or concentration for all four drugs. The aceclofenac finding is especially consequential because it documents conversion into diclofenac in buffalo, not merely a general concern about substitution.
Why vultures can remain at risk after diclofenac controls
Drug restrictions do not automatically end exposure
India prohibited manufacture of diclofenac for animal use in 2008. In 2015, it also restricted multi-dose human diclofenac vials to 3 ml to reduce veterinary misuse; the Press Information Bureau described that notification in a 2016 release. Those measures target important routes of exposure, but they do not by themselves ensure that every livestock treatment uses a vulture-safe medicine.

Conservation sources record later bans on other toxic veterinary NSAIDs, including aceclofenac, ketoprofen and nimesulide. The material available here does not specify the date, wording or present implementation details of each measure, so a current legal question about a particular product should be checked against current Indian government rules and veterinary guidance.
Protected areas cannot isolate vultures from livestock drugs
Nature India reported in 2024 that poisoning risk persists even around protected areas. Livestock and feral cattle can move through or near these landscapes, while vultures range over large areas to find food. A protected boundary therefore cannot prevent a bird from feeding on a carcass exposed to veterinary drugs elsewhere.

Misuse is another practical challenge. In the 2024 Nature India report, Prakash said that many people treating cattle in India are not trained in veterinary medicine and may misuse these drugs. That makes clear communication with livestock owners and access to veterinary advice part of conservation, alongside formal restrictions.
Which painkillers are considered safer for livestock?
Conservation sources discuss meloxicam as a vulture-safe alternative, and report that tolfenamic acid is safe at likely exposure doses. These findings are about risks to vultures under the evidence and exposure conditions considered; they are not a prescription for an individual animal or a guarantee that every drug, dose or circumstance is harmless.

If you care for cattle, do not choose a painkiller based on a general online list. Ask a licensed veterinarian to select treatment under current Indian veterinary guidance, and do not use diclofenac, aceclofenac, ketoprofen or nimesulide as a workaround for a vulture-safety concern. Appropriate care depends on the animal’s condition and the applicable rules.

Preventing exposure is central: toxic veterinary drugs need effective controls, and livestock treatment decisions need reliable veterinary guidance. Wildlife Institute of India reporting promotes safer alternatives such as meloxicam; conservation reporting also identifies tolfenamic acid as safe at likely exposure doses.

Other measures address different parts of the problem rather than replacing drug controls:
- Enforcement: restrictions only reduce risk when prohibited veterinary use is detected and addressed.
- Carcass management: managing livestock carcasses can reduce the chance that scavengers encounter contaminated remains.
- Captive breeding and release: these can support conservation, but cannot compensate for continued poisoning in the wild.
- Population monitoring: repeated, comparable monitoring is needed to distinguish a slower decline or local stabilisation from recovery.
- Public education: veterinarians, livestock owners and communities need clear guidance about vulture-safe treatment and carcass risks.
The three focal Gyps vultures remain critically endangered. Some slowing of decline or local stabilisation is not the same as broad recovery, and no single current population percentage is appropriate across species and survey methods.
How readers can help
The most useful individual response is to support credible vulture conservation, monitoring and public education, rather than buying or recommending a painkiller. BirdLife International, SAVE and the Bombay Natural History Society are conservation organisations associated with vulture work; check their current programmes and donation details directly before contributing.
