National Black Cat Day is held on 27 October. Cats Protection created the campaign in 2011 after finding that black cats in its care waited about seven days longer on average for homes than cats of other colours. A coat is not a personality test or a predictor of luck, but appearance bias and superstition can affect how quickly a cat is adopted. The practical response is simple: judge each cat by health, behaviour and compatibility, and support shelters that help overlooked animals.
When is National Black Cat Day?
National Black Cat Day takes place on 27 October as a Cats Protection campaign in the UK. Its purpose is to challenge the slower rehoming of black and black-and-white cats and to encourage people to see the individual animal rather than a symbol.

This date is separate from Black Cat Appreciation Day on 17 August, which is described by FOUR PAWS Australia as a different observance. Dates and campaign names therefore depend on the country and organisation involved.
Why are black cats considered bad luck?
The idea comes from folklore, not evidence about cats. The Natural History Museum traces European demonisation to medieval rumours that linked black cats with witchcraft and evil. Other cultures have treated black cats as signs of luck, prosperity or protection, showing that the meaning is assigned by people and changes by place and time.

None of these traditions demonstrates that a cat causes good or bad outcomes. A black coat is simply a colour pattern produced by genetics; it does not determine temperament, intelligence, affection or health.
Do black cats take longer to get adopted?
Some shelter data show a historical gap, but the figures are organisation-specific rather than a universal current rate.

| 2011 Cats Protection campaign baseline | Black cats waited about seven days longer on average | Average for cats in that organisation’s care at the time |
| 2010–2020 Cats Protection comparison | Black cats spent 10 fewer days in care than a decade earlier | Its 2020 retrospective |
| Five-year change reported in 2020 | 21% reduction in length of stay | Cats Protection operational data |
| 2019 gap | Two days | Cats Protection reported the difference had narrowed |
| Homes found since 2011 | More than 65,000 black and black-and-white cats | Cats Protection total reported in 2020 |
These results suggest progress, not that colour bias has disappeared everywhere. A 2015 Cats Protection survey also found that 12% of 18–24-year-olds, compared with 2% of people over 55, said black cats were unlucky. Survey responses measure belief, not adoption outcomes, but they help explain why campaigns still matter.

What does the latest research say about bias?
A 2024 peer-reviewed study in Animals measured both explicit opinions and implicit attitudes toward black cats. Superstition by itself did not predict black-cat bias. Among some participants who preferred dogs, however, belief in witchcraft and religiosity were associated with bias, and measured bias was stronger shortly before Halloween.
The result is more precise than the claim that every person who holds a superstition will reject a black cat. It indicates that social beliefs and seasonal context can interact, while individual decisions still vary.
Are black cats safe to adopt around Halloween?
Animal-welfare organisations have found no confirmed evidence that Halloween creates a special class of ritual-harm adopters. Berkeley Humane states that there are no confirmed statistics, court cases or studies pointing to nefarious adopters. Operation Kindness says welfare groups have debunked ritual-harm stories while acknowledging that superstition and unfounded fear can make adoption slower around Halloween.

How can I help a black cat?
The most direct help is a responsible adoption or foster placement. If you cannot take an animal home, practical support still improves a shelter’s ability to care for cats.
| Action | Direct adoption impact | Seasonal relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Adopt or foster | Highest: creates a home or frees shelter capacity | Useful year-round, including before Halloween |
| Donate | Funds food, veterinary treatment and rehoming work | Supports capacity during busy periods |
| Share an accurate profile | Improves visibility for a specific cat | Helpful when social feeds are crowded with seasonal content |
| Post for Black Cat Day or buy a themed item | Awareness support rather than direct placement | Best for correcting myths and directing people to shelters |
Choose the individual, not the colour
Ask the shelter about medical needs, energy level, handling preferences, household compatibility and introductions to children or other animals. Spend time with the cat when possible, and use the staff’s behavioural guidance. Good photographs, natural light and a clear description of personality can help a black cat stand out without turning the animal into a novelty.

Support safer, clearer communication
When sharing a listing, repeat verified information about age, health, location and adoption requirements. Correct claims about curses or Halloween rituals without amplifying them as established facts. A black cat mug or another Black Cat Day item can celebrate the campaign, but it is not a substitute for adoption, fostering or a donation.
What should people remember about black-cat stigma?
Black cats are affectionate, loyal and full of personality just like any other cat, as Battersea’s rehoming manager has noted. Historical figures show that attitudes can change: Cats Protection reported a much smaller adoption-time gap by 2019, while newer research shows that bias can still become more visible near Halloween. Treat colour as one physical trait, not a forecast of behaviour or fortune.

Can black cats see well in the dark?
No cat can see in complete darkness. Black cats have the same feline low-light adaptations as other cats, but their coat colour does not give them special night vision.

Why do black cats look different in shelter photos?
Dark fur can lose facial detail against a dim or busy background, making expression harder to read in a quick listing image. Even lighting, a clean background and several close-up and full-body photographs can show the cat more accurately.
Should shelters ban black-cat adoptions during October?
There is no universal evidence-based ban. Shelters set their own safeguards, and a sensible process is to assess every applicant consistently, follow up on concerns and avoid decisions based solely on a calendar date or coat colour.
