Normal vs Abnormal Body Temperature in Cats: Ranges, Readings and When to Call a Vet

A cat's normal rectal temperature is 100.5–102.5°F (38.1–39.2°C) per Merck Veterinary Manual. Here is how to measure accurately, why readings mislead, and when to call a vet.

A cat’s normal rectal temperature is 100.5–102.5°F (38.1–39.2°C), according to the cat-specific range in the Merck Veterinary Manual (2024 edition). A single reading tells you little on its own, though. Stress, technique and the method you use can all push a number up or down, and the same reading can mean very different things depending on how the cat is behaving. This guide covers how to measure accurately, how to read the number in context, and the thresholds at which VCA Animal Hospitals advises contacting a veterinarian.

What counts as a normal temperature for a cat

Merck Veterinary Manual gives the cat-specific normal rectal range as 100.5–102.5°F (38.1–39.2°C). VCA Animal Hospitals publishes a broader range for dogs and cats together, 100.0–102.5°F (37.7–39.2°C), on a page edited February 26, 2026. The two ranges agree at the top and differ at the bottom. A reading of 100.0–100.4°F falls inside VCA’s general range but just below Merck’s cat-specific range. Neither source treats that narrow band as an emergency, so it is best read as a borderline value to recheck, not a reason to panic.

A range is a reference point, not a diagnosis. Neither source establishes a separate normal range for kittens, senior cats, or cats already under treatment, so applying one range to every cat is only a starting point.

How to take your cat’s temperature

Merck describes rectal measurement as the noninvasive clinical standard. Ear and armpit (axillary) readings can be used for a cat that will not tolerate a rectal reading, but Merck considers them less accurate. VCA describes digital thermometers and rectal measurement as the practical options for home use.

Rectal reading with a digital thermometer

  1. Use a digital pet thermometer, and have a second person hold the cat gently but securely.
  2. Lubricate the tip of the thermometer.
  3. Insert the tip gently. If the cat resists, stop. VCA advises against forcing the thermometer.
  4. Hold it in place until the device signals a finished reading, then remove it and read the display.
  5. If the reading is high and the cat was struggling, let the cat settle for about 10 minutes, then repeat the measurement.

Ear and armpit readings

These methods are useful for comparison or when rectal measurement is not possible, but they are not interchangeable with a rectal number. The table below sets out what the two references state for each method.

Method Accuracy relative to rectal Practicality for a resistant or distressed cat Main risk of a misleading reading
Rectal (digital thermometer) Noninvasive clinical standard (Merck Veterinary Manual) Hardest when the cat resists; VCA advises not forcing the device Poor placement or stool can cause a falsely low reading; stress can raise it (VCA Animal Hospitals)
Ear Considered less accurate than rectal (Merck Veterinary Manual) Not stated (Merck Veterinary Manual) Not stated (Merck Veterinary Manual)
Armpit (axillary) Considered less accurate than rectal (Merck Veterinary Manual) Not stated (Merck Veterinary Manual) Not stated (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Readings that can mislead

Stress is the most common reason a high number does not reflect true fever. VCA Animal Hospitals, in an article written by Ryan Llera, BSc, DVM; Malcolm Weir, DVM, MSc, MPH; and Lynn Buzhardt, DVM, puts it this way:

Dogs and cats that resist restraint may have high temperatures that do not really qualify as a “fever”.

Placement is the main cause of a falsely low reading. A thermometer that is not seated properly, or stool blocking the measurement, can read low. If a reading is unexpected, repeat it using the steps above rather than acting on the first number.

High readings: fever or heatstroke

A high temperature has more than one cause, and the number alone cannot tell them apart. Merck explains that fever involves a raised hypothalamic set point, the body’s internal target temperature. Heatstroke can push body temperature up without resetting that target, which is why the two are treated differently.

What fever can point to

Fever may be associated with infection, inflammation, immune-mediated disease, or cancer. Working out the cause generally requires a veterinary history, a physical examination, and diagnostic tests. There is no home test that identifies which of these is responsible.

Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a form of hyperthermia, typically from heat exposure, and it can produce a temperature that looks like fever. It is an emergency. The signs are covered in the section below.

Low readings

Merck notes that very young or very old animals with severe infections may show low body temperatures. A low reading in a sick kitten or an elderly cat is therefore not automatically a measurement error. Recheck the reading carefully first, since placement and stool are common causes of falsely low numbers, but do not delay contacting a veterinarian if the reading stays low.

When to contact a veterinarian

VCA Animal Hospitals advises taking a cat to a veterinarian if its temperature remains above 104°F (40.0°C) or below 99°F (37.2°C). VCA describes both situations as emergencies.

Seek immediate veterinary care for suspected heatstroke. Merck lists these signs:

  • Rapid panting
  • Vomiting and drooling
  • Distress
  • Uncoordinated movement
  • Collapse or loss of consciousness

Merck advises against immersing the animal in cold water while you transport it. Neither Merck nor VCA gives a home medication protocol for a cat with a high temperature, and human fever medicines should not be given to cats.
