OCEARCH says Contender was the largest male white shark it had tagged, sampled, and released in the Western North Atlantic population. At tagging on January 17, 2025, OCEARCH reported that he measured 13.8 feet and weighed an estimated 1,653 pounds. This is an organization- and population-specific record, not a claim that Contender is the largest male or white shark ever measured.
What the record means
The record belongs to OCEARCH’s research program and is limited to male white sharks in its Western North Atlantic population. Attribute the superlative to OCEARCH: the organization says Contender is its largest male white shark tagged, sampled, and released in that population.
OCEARCH’s earlier claim that Nukumi was the largest white shark it had tagged does not conflict with Contender’s male-specific record: Nukumi was female, and the claims have different scopes. Neither statement establishes a world record across all white sharks or researchers.

OCEARCH’s methods explainer says its team can take several measurements, including different length measures, and uses them to help estimate age and assign age classes. But the public Contender announcement does not say which length convention produced 13.8 feet or provide a full measurement protocol. Avoid treating the figure as a standardized comparison with every other shark.

What did researchers study?
OCEARCH says samples collected from Contender are being analyzed for research on reproduction, health, and toxin exposure. The organization’s broader methods describe additional research areas, including diet, genetics, and related health questions, but those general projects should not be mistaken for confirmed findings about Contender.
OCEARCH founder and expedition leader Chris Fischer described the value of the tracking data this way: “Every ping from Contender gives us a window into the life of a mature male white shark—how he moves, feeds, and contributes to the population’s recovery,” (OCEARCH). This is the organization’s commentary on the research, not an independent finding.

How does Contender’s SPOT tag work?
OCEARCH says a SPOT (Smart Position and Temperature) tag is attached to the first dorsal fin and can send a satellite-linked location signal when the fin remains above the water briefly. The resulting map shows intermittent detections, not a continuous GPS trail or a second-by-second view of the shark. OCEARCH reported that Contender’s tag was expected to transmit for approximately five years; that is an expected operating period, not a guarantee of uninterrupted pings.
A gap in signals does not by itself show that a shark has died, left an area, or stopped moving. The reviewed sources do not identify the cause of any particular silence interval.

These devices provide different data. A public SPOT map should not be read as if it contains every measurement recorded by other tag types.
How can I follow Contender’s detections?
OCEARCH offers its free Global Shark Tracker online and as a mobile app, with animal profiles and movement information. Check the tracker for the newest available detection rather than relying on an old map or report. A detection is a signal received at a particular time, not proof of the shark’s current position.

OCEARCH’s October 2025 release reported that the organization’s tagged dataset in the Western North Atlantic included more than 100 individuals. It also reported that 88% of white sharks tagged in the U.S. Southeast had traveled to Atlantic Canada. That percentage is OCEARCH’s project finding; the release does not provide a denominator or method, so it should not be treated as a population-wide migration rate.
