Early police account and later coroner account
| Reporting | What it said |
|---|---|
| Early account | Police Chief Bruce Brooks said two neighbor-owned pigs attacked Westergaard and that the pigs had partially eaten her. |
| Later forensic account | Deputy Coroner Dr. C. Jeff Lee described a mauling, reported fatal blood loss associated with lower-extremity injuries, and did not characterize the case as one in which the pigs had eaten her. |
The distinction matters: “partially eaten” was part of the police chief’s early account, while the later medical explanation described fatal injuries and blood loss. The available reporting does not establish that ingestion caused her death.
What is known about the case’s status?
The sources reviewed for this article establish the initial police account and the coroner’s January 2025 explanation. They do not establish a later charging decision, the pigs’ eventual disposition, or whether the investigation was formally closed. Those outcomes should not be inferred from the early reports.
