A sailboat sank after an orca interaction off Costa da Caparica, Portugal, on September 13, 2025, and the people aboard needed rescue, according to Outdoors.com. The report does not name the vessel or establish how many people were aboard. The incident was one of several reported encounters in the region that week, but available accounts do not establish that they were the same event.
What happened off Costa da Caparica?
Outdoors.com reported that orcas disabled a sailboat off Costa da Caparica on September 13, 2025, and that it sank. Those aboard required rescue. The report does not identify the boat or give a confirmed occupant count, so those details should not be inferred from other nearby incidents.
A short Independent bulletin published September 18 mentions multiple encounters around the same region during that week. It says four people were rescued after an encounter near Costa da Caparica, that a yacht carrying five people sank near Fonte da Telha earlier in the week, and that there was a separate incident near Cascais. Because the bulletin compresses several reports, it does not make clear whether each detail refers to the September 13 sinking described by Outdoors.com. These accounts should be treated as separate reports unless a primary record confirms a connection.
Why are orcas interacting with boats?
The reason for this behavior is not established. Dr. Bec Wellard, research scientist and founder and head of research for Project ORCA, told Outdoors.com: “Killer whales are incredibly intelligent, exhibit culture, and show learned behavior.” She added: “In this instance, social learning may have occurred, where it started with either one or a few individual orcas exhibiting this type of interaction with boats and has now spread to others.” Social learning is a proposed explanation, not a confirmed motive for this particular encounter.

What other accounts can—and cannot—tell us
The Cruising Association’s library contains skipper-submitted accounts of varied interactions and outcomes, including rudder damage and crews contacting rescue services by VHF. These are firsthand anecdotes, not controlled evidence that a particular response deters orcas or prevents damage. The Association says its library is not advice and disclaims endorsement of harmful or unlawful actions.
The Independent’s phrase “Hundreds of similar incidents” is not accompanied by a precise count or named dataset in its bulletin. It should not be read as a verified incident total.
