The wet foods pair chicken with high moisture, while the dry Chicken & Sweet Potato recipe has much less moisture and a higher reported carbohydrate level. There is an important availability caveat: Cats.com reported that Purina had discontinued the Organix line in its review, last updated July 3, 2025. Treat this as an assessment of the reviewed recipes, not confirmation that they are currently for sale.

Cats.com’s Organix review was last updated July 3, 2025. Its rating-methodology page explains the six equally weighted criteria.
What the reviewed recipes contain

Dry Organic Chicken & Sweet Potato
Chicken and chicken meal lead the ingredient list. Other reported animal-derived ingredients include chicken fat, chicken liver and salmon oil. The review also identifies peas, pea protein, sweet potatoes, chickpeas and tapioca as notable plant ingredients. Cats.com describes the recipe as moderate in protein, low in fat and high in carbohydrates, and reports 412 calories per cup.
Wet Organic Chicken & Chicken Liver
Chicken and chicken liver are the leading ingredients, with a small amount of dried egg product also reported. The ingredient list includes peas, coconut flour and pea protein. Cats.com notes that this recipe does not contain guar gum, xanthan gum or carrageenan. It reports 183 calories per 5.5-ounce can, or about 33 calories per ounce, and characterizes the recipe as high in protein, moderate in fat and low in carbohydrates.

- ORGANIX Organic Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe Dry Cat Food

Wet Organic Chicken
Cats.com describes this as similar to the chicken-and-liver recipe, with carrots among its plant ingredients. It reports 194 calories per 5.5-ounce can, about 35 calories per ounce, and describes the profile as high in protein, moderate in fat and low in carbohydrates. The review reproduces the same guaranteed-analysis figures for both wet recipes; it does not establish a separate carbohydrate estimate for the Chicken recipe.

| Recipe | Guaranteed analysis, as fed | Carbohydrate, dry matter | Calories reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry Organic Chicken & Sweet Potato | 32% crude protein; 14% crude fat; 3.5% crude fiber; 11% moisture | 35.29% | 412 per cup |
| Wet Organic Chicken & Chicken Liver | 9% crude protein; 5% crude fat; 1% crude fiber; 78% moisture | 22.27% | 183 per 5.5-ounce can |
| Wet Organic Chicken | Same guaranteed-analysis figures reproduced for the chicken-and-liver recipe | Not stated for this recipe | 194 per 5.5-ounce can |
The wet recipe’s listed moisture is substantially higher than the dry recipe’s, and Cats.com’s carbohydrate calculation is lower for the Chicken & Chicken Liver wet food. That makes the wet recipes the stronger fit within this reviewed range for someone prioritizing moisture and a meat-forward canned format. The dry recipe may be more convenient to store and serve, but the review’s carbohydrate and moisture concerns are relevant if those are priorities for your cat. A veterinarian can help assess a food’s suitability for an individual cat, especially when a medical diet is needed.
Organic claims, production and sourcing
Cats.com reports that Organix products were made at Merrick’s company-owned facility in Hereford, Texas, which it describes as certified by the USDA National Organic Program. The review also says most ingredients were sourced in the United States, while some came from elsewhere. These are claims reported about the reviewed product line; they do not establish current production or sourcing after the line’s reported discontinuation.

Recall history: distinguish the product lines
Cats.com says Organix itself had never been recalled. Separately, it reports a 2007 recall of Castor & Pollux Natural Ultramix over potential cross-contamination with melamine-tainted wheat gluten, as well as three Merrick recalls between 2010 and 2018. Natural Ultramix is a different product line, and Merrick’s broader recall record is not the same as an Organix recall. These recall statements are reported by Cats.com; the review is not a regulator database, and the claims were not independently verified against regulator notices.

Cats.com reported that Purina had discontinued the Castor & Pollux line but did not give a reason. The review lists Amazon, Chewy, Petco, PetSmart, PetFlow and Thrive Market as sellers; that historical list does not establish current stock. If you encounter a listing, check that it is live, identifies the specific recipe and package, and can actually be purchased before relying on it. Current availability and formula status are not established here.

Who might prefer each format?
- Consider the wet recipes if you prioritize a canned, higher-moisture format and chicken-forward ingredients. Cats.com’s review favors these over the dry recipe on species appropriateness.
- Look carefully at the dry recipe if carbohydrate level and moisture are important considerations: the review reports 35.29% carbohydrate on a dry-matter basis and 11% moisture for it.
- Do not choose based on the old price or seller list alone. The line is reported discontinued, and current stock and prices are unverified.
- Ask your veterinarian about therapeutic or medical-diet needs. A brand review cannot determine whether a food is right for a particular cat.
