Pallas’s cat, also called the manul (Otocolobus manul), is a small, stocky wild cat of Central Asia’s rocky steppes, shrublands, deserts and mountain grasslands. Its dense seasonal coat, low profile, camouflage and use of rock crevices and burrows help it cope with cold, exposed terrain. The IUCN assessment record from 2019, published in a 2020 version, estimates that its lineage diverged from a leopard-cat ancestor about 5.9 million years ago; that is an estimate of evolutionary divergence, not the age of an individual cat or a fossil.
What is a Pallas’s cat?
The Pallas’s cat is a wild felid native to Central Asia. It is not a domestic-cat breed: it lives and hunts in open, often rugged landscapes, and typically shelters alone in natural cavities or burrows made by other animals. Its compact body, broad face and thick fur can make it look like a very fluffy house cat, but its adaptations and way of life are those of a wild predator.
The IUCN Red List assessment record from 2019, published in a 2020 version, estimates that Otocolobus manul diverged from a leopard-cat ancestor approximately 5.9 million years ago. This describes an estimated point of evolutionary separation; it does not mean scientists have dated the species to an exact age or established that 5.2 million years is the single accepted figure.
Why does the manul look so grumpy?
The characteristic expression comes largely from its broad, flat face, low-set rounded ears and thick fur around the head. The ears sit low and apart, helping the cat keep a low outline when it peers over rocks. Its small pupils also differ from the vertical slit pupils familiar in many domestic cats. The result can look stern to people, but it is simply the shape of a wild cat adapted to its surroundings.

How does a Pallas’s cat survive the cold?
Insulation for severe weather
A long, dense coat provides insulation, and the fur on the underside is nearly twice as long as the hair on the top and sides, according to the IUCN Cat Specialist Group. Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute reports that the winter coat helps insulate the cat when mountain temperatures fall below −58°F (−50°C). It sheds much of that thick coat in summer, when the weather is warmer.
Camouflage and a low profile
The coat changes seasonally and has white-tipped hairs that give it a frosted appearance. In rocky or pale steppe terrain, that coloring can help break up the cat’s outline. Its stocky body and low-set ears let it stay close to the ground and peer over rocks without exposing as much of its head as a taller animal would.

Cover close at hand
Rock crevices, caves and abandoned burrows provide places to rest, hide and raise kittens. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute puts the habitat requirement plainly: “Their survival depends on having enough scrubby, rocky habitat with places to hide and sleep.”
Where does the Pallas’s cat live?
Pallas’s cats range across Central Asia, using dry, open environments that include rocky steppe, shrubland, grassland, desert and mountain grassland. They are associated with rough terrain and cover rather than one particular elevation or habitat type. The landscape must offer prey as well as secure resting and den sites.

What does a Pallas’s cat eat, and how does it hunt?
Prey centered on small mammals
Pikas are a major food source: the IUCN assessment says they typically make up more than 50% of the diet across the species’ range. Other prey includes voles, gerbils, hamsters, small marmots, lizards and birds. The exact menu depends on which prey is available locally.

Ambush rather than a long chase
The cat is a solitary ambush hunter. The IUCN Cat Specialist Group describes three approaches: stalking low through cover, moving through grass to flush prey, and waiting at burrow entrances to seize animals as they emerge. Smithsonian reports that Pallas’s cats hunt mainly at dusk, dawn and night. They may wait near a rodent-burrow exit or reach a paw inside, using cover and a sudden strike rather than relying on a prolonged chase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are Pallas’s cats solitary, and how do they raise kittens?
They are generally solitary. Males and females come together briefly during a short breeding season in early spring. Smithsonian reports a gestation of about 74–75 days and litters of three to six kittens. Kittens are born blind; they learn to hunt with their mother and become independent at roughly six months.

Is the Pallas’s cat endangered?
The IUCN Cat Specialist Group page reports the species as Near Threatened and notes that national listings differ. That wording should be read with its source and date, rather than as a timeless or universal legal status. The cited IUCN assessment is a 2019 assessment record published in a 2020 version.
RZSS’s July 2026 update emphasizes that the species is difficult to survey because it is cryptic and available data are sparse. Those limits make it harder to establish population trends and compare results across its broad range. “Near Threatened” does not mean the cat is free from risk, nor does it establish the same legal protection in every country where it occurs.
What threatens Pallas’s cats?
Habitat degradation and fragmentation
The IUCN assessment identifies habitat degradation and fragmentation as the most serious range-wide threat. Increasing livestock numbers and overgrazing can degrade steppe habitat; conversion of steppe to arable land, infrastructure development and resource extraction can further reduce or divide suitable areas. Fragmented habitat may leave fewer connected places with both prey and secure dens.
Other sources of mortality
- Poisoning: Smithsonian notes that cats can be poisoned accidentally after eating rodents targeted with poison to protect crops.
- Herding dogs and predation: The IUCN assessment identifies herding dogs and predation among mortality sources.
- Human offtake: The IUCN assessment also records human offtake as a source of mortality.
What conservation work can help?
Conservation needs to address the landscape and the conditions that allow the cat to hunt and den. Priorities include protecting connected rocky and steppe habitat, maintaining prey populations and den sites, improving surveys, and reducing poisoning and illegal offtake. Standardized monitoring is particularly useful for a secretive species whose sparse records make population change difficult to assess.
