Does the PawSwing AutoComb really work?
There is not enough independent evidence to say how effectively the AutoComb removes loose fur, how many cats tolerate it, or whether it performs better than a conventional brush. PawSwing’s description explains the intended mechanism, but no independent product trial or clinical evaluation establishing its effectiveness was identified.
That distinction matters for health claims. Regular brushing can remove loose hair, but general veterinary advice about brushing does not demonstrate that this specific device prevents hairballs, intestinal blockages, skin problems, stress, or disease. Treat PawSwing’s product-specific performance and safety claims as the company’s claims unless supported by evidence beyond its own materials.

Can grooming help with cat hairballs?
Yes, routine brushing or combing can reduce loose hair on a cat’s coat, which may reduce the amount swallowed during self-grooming. Cornell’s Feline Health Center explains that most swallowed hair passes through the digestive tract, while some can accumulate into a hairball. Cornell recommends daily brushing and combing to minimize hairballs and their complications. Cornell’s hairball guidance does not evaluate the PawSwing device.

In the context of a serious hairball obstruction, Richard Goldstein, DVM, an associate professor of small animal medicine at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine, warns: “Without surgical intervention, it can be fatal.” That is a warning about obstruction, not evidence that a particular grooming product can prevent it.

How does it compare with a regular brush?
A conventional brush lets an owner control where and how firmly the tool contacts the cat. The AutoComb’s proposed advantage is that a cat may approach it voluntarily, but that depends on the individual cat accepting the device and its grooming contact. No comparative test establishes that either method removes more fur.

VCA advises that regular brushing removes loose hair and dead skin cells, helps keep a coat free of debris, and gives owners a chance to inspect the skin and coat. Is an automatic cat self-groomer safe?
Safety depends on the individual cat, the device’s fit and condition, and how it is introduced. A third-party listing for the AutoComb manual says not to force a cat into the unit and gives a supported weight range of 8 to 33 pounds. Because that information comes from a manual listing rather than a verified current manufacturer manual, confirm the instructions and limits in the manual supplied with your product before use. Do not push or restrain a cat to make it pass through a grooming device. If the cat backs away, appears distressed, or will not tolerate the grooming contact, stop and use a grooming method the cat accepts; ask a veterinarian or professional groomer for advice if brushing is difficult or the coat is tangled or matted.

It is harder to justify if your cat avoids enclosed equipment, needs careful owner-controlled grooming, or has mats that require targeted attention. In either case, choose based on your cat’s coat and tolerance—not on an assumption that the device has proven medical or hairball-prevention benefits.
