The Peekapoo is a Pekingese crossed with a Toy or Miniature Poodle. It is usually a small, affectionate companion, but there is no single, universally enforced Peekapoo appearance or temperament standard. One dog may have a curly Poodle-like coat and energetic personality; another may be more heavily built, independent, and straight-coated like its Pekingese parent.
That variability is the most important part of choosing one. Expect a small dog that may be devoted, lively, alert, and vocal, along with meaningful grooming needs and health considerations related to both parent breeds. A Peekapoo is not automatically hypoallergenic, shed-free, or healthier than a Pekingese or Poodle.

What is a Peekapoo?
A Peekapoo—also spelled Pekeapoo—is a designer cross between a Pekingese and either a Toy Poodle or a Miniature Poodle. The Poodle parent’s size matters: a Toy Poodle cross may mature smaller than one involving a Miniature Poodle, although inherited traits and the individual puppy also influence the result.
Unlike a breed with one tightly defined conformation standard, Peekapoos can vary from litter to litter and even within the same litter. Size, body shape, muzzle length, coat texture, shedding, energy level, trainability, and sociability are not reliably determined by the name “Peekapoo.”
Crossbreeding also does not guarantee that a puppy will receive only the desirable traits of each parent. A Peekapoo may inherit health risks, sensitivities, or less convenient behaviors from either side of the family. Treat claims such as “always hypoallergenic,” “100% non-shedding,” and “automatically healthier” as marketing rather than established facts.
Size and appearance
Published estimates commonly place Peekapoos at approximately 8–20 pounds and 8–15 inches at the shoulder. These are useful guide ranges, not a formal guarantee. Ask about the parents’ actual adult sizes, especially when a breeder uses terms such as Toy, Miniature, “teacup,” or “tiny.”
The coat is one of the most variable features. A Peekapoo may have:
- Soft curls or a dense, Poodle-like texture;
- Loose curls or waves;
- A straighter coat with more Pekingese influence; or
- A coat that changes substantially as the puppy matures.
Coat length and grooming style can also change the dog’s appearance. A short clip may make a heavily coated dog look quite different from the same dog in a longer, fuller style.
The Pekingese parent provides useful context but not a blueprint. The American Kennel Club’s Pekingese profile describes a compact, short, stocky dog with a large head, short muzzle, thick double coat, and distinctive rolling gait. Some Peekapoos may show elements of that structure, while others may look much more Poodle-like.

Peekapoo temperament and personality
Many Peekapoos are affectionate companion dogs that prefer to remain close to their people. They may be playful and lively in the home, yet small enough to settle after an appropriate amount of activity. Alertness can also make them quick to notice sounds, visitors, or activity outside the home—and some become persistent barkers.
Those are tendencies, not promises. A Peekapoo’s adult behavior reflects inherited temperament, early socialization, training, daily routine, environment, and past experiences. Observe the actual dog rather than choosing solely from a breed description.
Children and other pets
A Peekapoo may live successfully with respectful children and other animals, but its small size does not make it suitable for rough handling. The AKC describes Pekingese as loyal, affectionate, confident, independent, and alert, while also cautioning that the breed may tolerate children without being suited to roughhousing. A Peekapoo with similar sensitivity should have a quiet retreat and should never be picked up, chased, squeezed, or disturbed while eating or sleeping.
Supervise all interactions with young children. Teach children to approach calmly, allow the dog to move away, and handle grooming-sensitive areas such as the face and feet only with adult guidance. Introductions to dogs, cats, visitors, grooming, household sounds, and handling should be gradual and positive.
Exercise needs
Peekapoos are generally described as needing moderate exercise. A practical routine may combine short walks, indoor play, sniffing opportunities, food puzzles, and brief training sessions. There is no reliable single daily-minute prescription for every Peekapoo: a puppy, senior, overweight dog, healthy adult, and short-muzzled dog may need very different routines.
- Start with manageable activity and increase it gradually.
- Use play and training as well as walks to provide mental stimulation.
- Keep sessions short if the dog becomes frustrated or distracted.
- Be particularly cautious in hot or humid weather.
- Stop and seek veterinary advice for breathing difficulty, collapse, unusual fatigue, or reluctance to exercise.
The Pekingese parent typically has modest exercise requirements, but that does not mean every Peekapoo should be inactive. The right amount is the amount that keeps the individual dog fit and engaged without causing distress.
Training and socialization
Use reward-based training, clear routines, and brief repetitions. Poodles are often valued for their intelligence and engagement, while Pekingese can be independent and self-directed. A Peekapoo may therefore learn quickly but decide that a repetitive exercise is not worth doing.

Socialization does not mean forcing a puppy to interact; it means pairing new experiences with safety, distance, choice, and rewards.
Grooming: the commitment many owners underestimate
Plan for substantial coat maintenance. Depending on texture, length, and growth rate, a Peekapoo may need brushing or combing every couple of days and professional clipping roughly every four to eight weeks. A longer, denser, curlier coat can mat quickly, especially behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and in the armpits.
For home maintenance, a small-dog slicker brush can help separate loose hairs and surface tangles, while a stainless-steel comb can reveal mats that a brush slides over. A brush is not a guarantee that every coat can be maintained with one tool. Work gently in sections and comb through to the skin rather than merely smoothing the top layer. If the coat is tightly matted, have a professional groomer or veterinarian advise you; pulling at mats can hurt the dog.
Owners who cannot maintain the coat confidently should find a professional dog groomer and budget for recurring appointments. Waiting until a coat is severely matted can make grooming painful and may require a very short shave. The precise appointment interval should follow the dog’s coat and the chosen haircut, not an inflexible calendar.
Routine Peekapoo care checklist
- Brush and comb: Check frequently for tangles, particularly in friction areas.
- Face and tear area: Gently clean as needed and keep the area dry. Persistent discharge, redness, pain, swelling, or odor warrants veterinary attention.
- Ears: Keep them clean and dry. Scratching, odor, discharge, or recurrent infections should be evaluated by a veterinarian rather than treated indefinitely at home.
- Nails: Trim regularly. Small-dog clippers or a grinder can be useful if the owner knows how to use them safely.
- Teeth: Brush with veterinarian-approved toothpaste, ideally beginning when the dog is young. Home brushing does not replace professional veterinary dental care.
- Professional grooming: Schedule clipping before the coat becomes difficult to manage.
Peekapoo health considerations
The responsible health conclusion is not a guaranteed list of diseases. A Peekapoo can inherit traits from either parent, and the outcome varies among individuals. Crossbreed status alone does not prove that a dog has fewer health problems.
Breathing and heat tolerance
The Pekingese parent’s short muzzle deserves attention. Short-muzzled dogs can have reduced tolerance for heat and strenuous activity, and breathing problems may not be obvious in every situation. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals’ respiratory-function information notes that respiratory problems can develop or become more apparent later in life; a puppy that breathes comfortably today should not be treated as permanently risk-free.

Keep the dog cool, avoid intense exercise in heat, use a properly fitted harness rather than putting pressure on the neck, and seek veterinary care for noisy or labored breathing, fainting, blue or gray gums, overheating, or recovery that seems unusually slow.
Everyday prevention matters
Weight control, dental hygiene, coat care, parasite prevention, vaccinations, and routine examinations are important for any Peekapoo. Excess weight can make breathing, heat management, mobility, and grooming more difficult. Ask your veterinarian which examinations, screening tests, dental procedures, vaccination schedule, and parasite preventives fit your dog’s age, location, lifestyle, and medical history.

How to choose a Peekapoo from a breeder
Since there is no single universal Peekapoo health-screening protocol, ask for evidence about both parent breeds and the specific dogs behind the litter. Do not accept a verbal assurance that the puppies are “healthy” as a substitute for documentation.
Questions worth asking
- What are the registered names and adult sizes of both parents?
- What veterinary examinations and DNA tests have been completed for each parent?
- Can you see the actual reports, not just a certificate summary or sales claim?
- What health problems have occurred in parents, siblings, grandparents, and other close relatives?
- How have the puppies been introduced to brushing, bathing, clipping, nail handling, face handling, children, sounds, and other dogs?
- What written health guarantee, return policy, vaccination record, and ongoing breeder support are provided?
- What happens if the dog cannot remain with the buyer?
The OFA’s CHIC program explains why breed-specific screening and public release of results can be useful. CHIC does not create a Peekapoo-specific standard, but its approach supports a sensible rule: request verifiable parent-health information and understand exactly what each test does—and does not—show.
Be cautious with labels such as “teacup,” “non-shedding,” and “hypoallergenic.” They may describe a marketing preference rather than a documented health, size, or allergy outcome. If possible, meet the parents, see where the puppies are raised, and observe whether the adult dogs appear comfortable with handling and ordinary household activity.

Adoption can be a good route to finding a Pekingese–Poodle mix, although availability depends on location and changes over time. An adult or fostered dog may offer more information about mature size, coat, sociability, barking, grooming tolerance, and alone-time behavior than a young puppy.

Is a Peekapoo a good fit for you?
A Peekapoo may be a good match if you want a small companion, enjoy daily interaction, are prepared for positive training, and can maintain or pay for regular grooming. It may fit an apartment or smaller home when its exercise, enrichment, barking, and toilet-training needs are managed responsibly.
It may be a poor fit if you want a genuinely low-maintenance coat, a dog guaranteed to be allergy-friendly, or a pet that can be left alone for long periods without preparation. A small body does not eliminate the need for companionship, training, veterinary care, or exercise.
The best decision comes from evaluating the actual dog’s coat, breathing, behavior, and handling tolerance—not from assuming that every Peekapoo will combine the same traits. Meet the parents when buying from a breeder, spend time with the puppy or adult in ordinary settings, and ask directly about grooming and alone-time behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Peekapoos hypoallergenic?
No. Some Peekapoos may shed less than a Pekingese, but coat type and shedding vary. No dog can be guaranteed hypoallergenic, and a Peekapoo should not be chosen on the assumption that it will be allergy-friendly.
Are Peekapoos good with children?
Many are affectionate and suitable for respectful families, but their small size and possible Pekingese-like sensitivity mean young children should always be supervised. Rough handling is unsafe.
How often does a Peekapoo need grooming?
Expect regular brushing or combing and professional clipping approximately every four to eight weeks, depending on coat texture, length, growth rate, and haircut.
How big does a Peekapoo get?
A common published estimate is 8–20 pounds and 8–15 inches at the shoulder. The adult size depends partly on whether the Poodle parent is Toy or Miniature and on the individual dog’s inheritance.

They typically need moderate, individualized exercise such as short walks, indoor play, sniffing, and brief training. Avoid overheating and consult a veterinarian if the dog shows breathing difficulty, unusual fatigue, or reluctance to exercise.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Peekapoos can be affectionate, lively small companions, but they are variable Pekingese–Poodle crosses rather than a predictable standardized breed. Choose one only if you are comfortable with recurring grooming, individualized training, careful heat and breathing management, and the uncertainty that comes with inherited traits from two different parent breeds.
