Pepper the Cat: What Her Wildlife Finds Revealed to a Virus Scientist

Pepper brought home wildlife that virologist John Lednicky tested, leading to reports of a rodent-associated jeilongvirus and a novel orthoreovirus strain in an Everglades shrew. The discoveries do not establish human illness or how common either virus is.

Pepper, a cat owned by virologist John Lednicky, brought home wildlife that her owner tested in connection with research. Those opportunistic tests identified two viruses in separate specimens: a rodent-associated jeilongvirus and, later, a novel orthoreovirus strain in an Everglades short-tailed shrew. The findings are scientifically notable, but they do not show that Pepper sought out viruses or that either discovery caused human illness.

How Pepper became part of the story

John Lednicky is a virologist and research professor at the University of Florida. Accounts of his work describe him testing specimens from animals Pepper brought home. This was opportunistic research: an available animal specimen prompted testing, rather than a planned survey designed to measure how often a virus occurs in wildlife.

That distinction matters. A finding in one specimen can identify a virus worth studying, but it cannot establish how widespread the virus is, how it moves between animals, or whether it poses a risk to people.

The first reported finding: a rodent-associated jeilongvirus

Catster reported that Lednicky initially tested a rodent Pepper had brought home while investigating whether rodents could carry deer mulepox. Instead, the tests identified Gainesville rodent jeilong virus 1 (GRJV1), which Catster described as a newly detected jeilongvirus and a first U.S. detection. The primary paper was not available for review here, so those details are best understood as Catster’s account rather than as a basis for broader claims about the virus or its risk.

Catster also mentioned a possible spillover risk based on early research. That possibility should not be read as evidence that the virus infected people or that a human threat is imminent.

The later finding: an orthoreovirus in an Everglades shrew

In a separate episode, Pepper brought home a dead Everglades short-tailed shrew. A University of Florida-credited report says researchers found a novel mammalian orthoreovirus type 3 strain in it, named Gainesville shrew mammalian orthoreovirus type 3 strain UF-1. The team reported the strain’s complete genomic coding sequences in Microbiology Resource Announcements; the report’s reference gives the paper date as June 10, 2025.

Lednicky described the work as “This was an opportunistic study,” and said, “The bottom line is we need to pay attention to orthoreoviruses, and know how to rapidly detect them,” according to the University of Florida-credited report. Lead author Emily DeRuyter, identified there as a UF Ph.D. candidate in One Health, said: “There are many different mammalian orthoreoviruses, and not enough is known about this recently identified virus to be concerned,”

What the discovery does—and does not—tell us

The shrew result establishes that researchers detected this strain in the specimen they tested and reported its genomic coding sequences. The report says the strain’s effects on human health remain unclear. It does not establish that the virus caused human illness, that the shrew transmitted it to Pepper or a person, or how common the strain is in shrews or other wildlife.

  • Established by the report: the identified orthoreovirus strain was found in a dead shrew Pepper brought home, and the team reported its complete genomic coding sequences.
  • Still unknown: its prevalence in wildlife, its routes of transmission, and its effects on people.
  • Not shown by the finding: that Pepper intentionally hunted viruses, that she or the shrew infected a person, or that this particular strain has caused human disease.

The report identifies serology and immunology work as possible next steps to clarify the virus’s significance. Those are avenues for further study, not evidence that a human-health effect has already been demonstrated.

Why Pepper’s role is unusual, not a surveillance method

Pepper’s contribution was bringing home animals that happened to become research specimens. That can lead to an unexpected discovery, as it did with the shrew-associated strain, but it is not a systematic way to monitor wildlife viruses. Because the specimens arose opportunistically, the findings cannot provide a prevalence estimate or a representative picture of the viruses circulating in the region.
