They can be affectionate without being demanding, but their appearance comes with daily maintenance and some important health considerations. A Persian is best suited to a home prepared for regular grooming, careful weight management, and veterinary monitoring of breathing, eyes, teeth, and skin.

What does a Persian cat look like?
The Persian is a compact cat with a broad chest, short legs, small rounded ears, a short neck, and a full, flowing coat. Its head is round, with large round eyes and a short muzzle. Show standards favor a very short, “snub” nose, while many pet Persians have a less extreme face.

Persians come in a wide range of colors and patterns, including white, black, blue, cream, red, chocolate, lilac, smoke, shaded, tabby, tortoiseshell, and colorpoint varieties. Eye color depends partly on coat color; copper, gold, hazel, green, and blue are all seen.

- Traditional or doll-face: The nose projects farther forward and the facial structure is less extreme.
- Modern or ultra-type: The nose is much shorter and the face appears flatter.
Facial structure matters for health. A very short muzzle can leave less room for normal tear drainage, teeth alignment, and comfortable airflow. When choosing a kitten, health and breathing should take priority over an exaggerated facial appearance.
Persian cat temperament
Most Persian cats are calm, affectionate, and comfortable living at a relatively unhurried pace. They often enjoy sitting near their people, receiving gentle attention, and following familiar household routines. Many are happy to share a sofa without constantly demanding to be carried or played with.
They are not usually among the most energetic or acrobatic cat breeds. A Persian may enjoy short sessions with a wand toy, a lightweight ball, or a puzzle feeder, then settle down for a nap. Individual cats vary: some are playful and outgoing, while others are reserved with visitors.
Persians are often quiet, but quiet does not mean uncommunicative. They may use soft meows, purrs, body language, and proximity to express what they want. They can live successfully with children and other pets when introductions are gradual and the cat has somewhere private to retreat.
Grooming: the main day-to-day commitment
A Persian’s coat can mat quickly, especially under the front legs, around the collar, behind the ears, on the belly, and beneath the tail. Brushing every day is the safest routine for most long-coated Persians. Some coats can be maintained with brushing every other day, but waiting a full week commonly allows tangles to become dense mats.
Rank #2
- GENTLE DETANGLING & MAT REMOVAL – Rounded stainless steel teeth glide smoothly through mats and tangles without pulling fur, ideal for long-haired breeds like Persians and Maine Coons. Safe for sensitive skin and daily grooming use.
- ANTI-STATIC & EASY TO CLEAN – Metal comb minimizes static electricity, keeping fur smooth and manageable. Simply rinse under water for quick cleaning, no residue or rust thanks to corrosion-resistant stainless steel construction.
- DURABLE & COMFORTABLE DESIGN – Lightweight yet sturdy 6-inch comb fits comfortably in hand. Polished rounded tips ensure a pleasant grooming experience for both pets and owners, reducing grooming stress.
- SUITABLE FOR MULTIPLE PET TYPES – Effective on long-haired cats, short-haired cats, dogs, rabbits, and small pets. An essential tool for pet owners seeking to manage shedding, prevent knots, and maintain a healthy coat.
- PROFESSIONAL GROOMING RESULTS AT HOME – Captures loose fur efficiently, reducing shedding around the house. Promotes healthier skin and coat by distributing natural oils and stimulating blood circulation during brushing.
Use a metal comb to work through the coat in sections, reaching from the skin outward. A slicker brush can help remove loose hair, but it should not replace checking the coat with a comb. Work slowly and stop if the cat becomes distressed. Pulling hard on a mat can hurt and may make future grooming more difficult.
Do not cut mats close to the skin with household scissors. Cat skin can be pulled into a mat and cut accidentally. Extensive matting is safer to address with a professional groomer or veterinarian, particularly if the cat is painful or unable to tolerate handling.

Other routine care
- Eye cleaning: Flat-faced Persians commonly develop tear staining and discharge. Wipe each eye with a separate damp, soft cloth or a product recommended by your veterinarian. Persistent redness, swelling, cloudiness, squinting, or thick discharge needs an examination.
- Nails: Trim the sharp tips approximately every two to four weeks, adjusting for the cat’s growth and scratching habits.
- Teeth: Brush with cat toothpaste as often as possible, ideally daily. Dental diets and treats do not replace brushing or veterinary dental care.
- Bathing: Occasional bathing may help a heavily coated or oily cat, but it is not a substitute for combing. Dry the coat thoroughly to prevent chilling and tangles.
- Sanitary trimming: Some owners have the fur around the hindquarters trimmed to reduce fecal contamination, especially in cats with loose stools or mobility problems.
Exercise, enrichment, and home setup
Persians do not need the same level of exercise as highly active breeds, but they still need daily opportunities to move and make choices. Two or three short play sessions can be more appealing than one long workout. Rotate toys, offer scratching posts, and use food puzzles or treat-search games to provide mental stimulation.
Provide stable furniture rather than tall, narrow climbing structures that could wobble under a stocky cat. A low window perch, covered bed, scratching surface, and quiet grooming area are useful additions. Persians are generally indoor cats; their long coat can collect debris outdoors, and their calm temperament may make them less equipped to avoid hazards.
Keep the litter box large enough for the cat to turn around comfortably and choose a low-dust litter. Flat-faced cats can find strongly scented products irritating. Scoop at least once daily and place boxes in quiet, accessible locations.

Feeding and weight control
Feed a complete and balanced cat food appropriate for the cat’s life stage. Persians do not require a special breed-only diet, but their compact build and relatively low activity can make weight gain easy. Measure meals rather than leaving unlimited food available, and reassess portions as the cat grows, is neutered, or becomes less active.
Use body condition—not the number on the scale alone—to judge weight. You should be able to feel the ribs beneath a light layer of fat and see some waist when viewing the cat from above. Ask a veterinarian to assess body condition at routine visits. Overweight Persians face greater grooming difficulty and may have increased risk of diabetes, joint strain, and skin problems.
Health issues associated with Persian cats
Many Persians live long, comfortable lives, but responsible ownership includes screening for conditions that occur more often in the breed or are influenced by its body structure.
Brachycephalic airway problems
A shortened muzzle can narrow the nostrils and upper airways. Signs of a breathing problem include persistent noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, open-mouth breathing, gagging, difficulty sleeping comfortably, or blue or gray gums. Cats should not routinely pant like dogs. Breathing difficulty is an emergency, particularly if it develops suddenly or worsens quickly.
Heat is especially dangerous for flat-faced cats. Keep a Persian indoors in a cool, well-ventilated space during hot weather, and never leave one in a parked car.

Polycystic kidney disease
Polycystic kidney disease, or PKD, is an inherited condition in which cysts develop in the kidneys. Affected cats may eventually develop chronic kidney disease. DNA testing is available, and reputable breeders should be able to discuss the PKD status of breeding cats. Symptoms such as increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss, vomiting, or reduced appetite require veterinary attention but are not specific to PKD.
Eye and skin problems
Facial anatomy can interfere with tear drainage and cause chronic staining, irritation, or eyelid abnormalities. Dense coats and skin folds can also trap moisture and contribute to dermatitis. Check the face daily and seek veterinary advice for odor, sores, hair loss, persistent scratching, or discharge.
Dental disease
Short jaws can crowd the teeth, making plaque and gum disease more likely. Bad breath, drooling, chewing on one side, dropping food, or reluctance to eat are reasons for a dental examination. A veterinarian may recommend professional cleaning under anesthesia and dental X-rays.
Other concerns
Persians may also be affected by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hip problems, patellar luxation, and disorders affecting the liver or retina. These are not inevitable, and a breed label cannot diagnose an individual cat. Regular examinations, appropriate blood tests in older cats, and prompt attention to changes in appetite, breathing, urination, movement, or grooming habits are more useful than assuming every symptom is “normal for the breed.”

Do not take home a kitten that is lethargic, has labored breathing, persistent diarrhea, heavy eye discharge, a dirty rear end, or a visibly matted coat without first obtaining veterinary advice. A kitten should be old enough to be fully weaned and responsibly placed; many breeders place kittens at approximately 12–14 weeks rather than rushing them into new homes.
Is a Persian cat right for you?
A Persian may be a good match if you want a quiet indoor companion and can commit to daily coat care. The breed is less suitable for someone who wants a low-maintenance cat, travels frequently without arranging dependable care, or prefers a highly athletic and constantly active pet.
Before bringing one home, budget for grooming supplies, routine veterinary care, dental care, possible professional grooming, and the larger costs that can accompany inherited or breathing-related disease. The right Persian is not simply the cat with the flattest face or fullest coat; it is a cat that can breathe comfortably, move normally, eat without difficulty, and tolerate basic handling.
FAQ
Are Persian cats high-maintenance?
Yes, mainly because their long coats require regular combing—usually daily—and their eyes, teeth, nails, and skin need routine attention. Their calm temperament and modest exercise needs can make them easier in other respects.
Do Persian cats shed?
Yes. Persians shed loose hair throughout the year and may shed more heavily during seasonal changes. Frequent combing reduces loose hair and helps prevent mats and hairballs, but it does not eliminate shedding.
Can Persian cats live with children and dogs?
They can, provided introductions are gradual and the cat has a quiet escape area. Children should be taught to handle the cat gently, and dogs should be supervised until their behavior around the cat is predictable.
How often should a Persian cat be groomed?
Comb the coat daily when possible. At minimum, many Persians need grooming every other day, with extra attention to the armpits, belly, ruff, behind the ears, and hindquarters. Professional help is safer than household scissors for severe mats.

Daily combing, careful eye and dental care, weight control, heat avoidance, and screening for inherited disease are central to responsible Persian ownership.
