Why the change may have looked so dramatic

Major cat registries describe them as slow-maturing cats that may take as long as five years to reach their full adult development.
That long maturation period matters. A young Siberian—or a domestic longhair with similar traits—may not initially have the imposing ruff, full tail, thick coat, and substantial body associated with an adult. Seasonal coat changes can also make the difference between a kitten’s appearance and an adult’s appearance seem especially striking.

Siberian coats are thick and water-resistant, and breed descriptions note that some Siberians enjoy water-related play. The breed is also commonly described as playful, intelligent, agile, affectionate, and capable of chirping or “talking” to people. Those characteristics help explain why Castiel’s water play and vocal personality sounded familiar to people who know the breed—but they do not prove his pedigree. Big and fluffy does not automatically mean purebred
Size and coat alone cannot establish that a cat is a purebred Siberian. A large domestic longhair can have a similar appearance, especially after developing a thick adult coat. For a recognized purebred designation, pedigree or registry documentation is the stronger evidence.
In Castiel’s case, the available account does not establish his exact adult weight, age when adopted, breeder history, genetic composition, or current status. It also does not show that he was registered or genetically tested. The safest description is therefore the least sensational one: his owner said he was a Siberian, and he reportedly grew from a tiny, ordinary-looking kitten into a large, fluffy, Siberian-type cat.
The flea problem was more serious than a cosmetic nuisance

A flea comb for cats can be useful as a non-medicated way to inspect the coat and remove some adult fleas, but it is not a substitute for veterinary care when a kitten is heavily infested. Flea medication must be chosen according to the animal’s age, weight, and health; products that are safe for one cat may be unsafe for a very young kitten. Owners should not guess at a dose or use a product intended for another species.
A coat like Castiel’s needs regular maintenance
