Perth Zoo’s Northern White-cheeked Gibbon Jermei returned to the outdoor exhibit on 23 July 2025, about three weeks after the loss of her sixth infant and a Caesarean section. She explored with her daughter Lulani and mate Kayak as keepers gradually restored her access to the family group.
What happened to Jermei’s infant?
PerthNow reported in June 2025 that Jermei went into labour and gynaecological experts performed a C-section in an effort to give the infant a chance of survival. The baby had a faint heartbeat at delivery but died shortly afterward. Neither the reporting nor the Zoo statements cited in it establish a cause of death, so one should not be inferred. PerthNow’s July account later described the outdoor return; its June report covered the loss.

When did Jermei return outside?
On 23 July 2025, PerthNow reported that Jermei had her first outdoor exploration since the infant’s death. She had spent about three weeks inside and went out with Lulani and Kayak. The report described her as 22 and Lulani as six at that time; those are historical ages, not current-age claims.

How did keepers manage her recovery?
Primate keeper Nene Haggar told PerthNow that Jermei found separation from her family difficult. Staff were concerned that grooming could disturb her stitches, so they reintroduced her to the group gradually and monitored how she managed. Haggar said the team wanted to give Jermei full access to her space because she was making good progress, while recognizing that resting after surgery is difficult for an active, curious gibbon.

Haggar also said the Zoo’s 2025 breeding-program approach was to let Jermei live her life and relax after pregnancy complications and challenges. That was a keeper’s reported assessment at the time, not confirmation of a current formal program decision or of Jermei’s present medical status.

Perth Zoo identifies Northern White-cheeked Gibbons as critically endangered and names habitat destruction, poaching and illegal wildlife trade as threats. The Zoo says it supports field conservation in Vietnam through Fauna & Flora. PerthNow reported that 11 white-cheeked gibbons had been born at Perth Zoo over 35 years; this is a Zoo-related birth count reported by the outlet, not an estimate of the wild population.
