Perth Zoo’s baby Bolivian squirrel monkey featured in an April 2025 naming appeal was named Miski. The infant was born to Reina about two months before the appeal; the zoo invited the public to choose from four names, and a later Western Australian Government update confirmed the result.
Who was the new arrival, and what was the baby named?
PerthNow reported on 1 April 2025 that Reina had given birth roughly two months earlier. The story said Perth Zoo was asking the public to choose a name from Junki, Miski, Chuchi and Cielo. On 11 April, the Government of Western Australia identified the infant as Miski and said the name means “sweet” in Aymara.

The government update placed Miski in the zoo’s Amazonia habitat. Its report is the follow-up to the naming story, not an announcement about the separate monkey births Perth Zoo reported later.
How do the monkeys care for their young?
The April 2025 account described Reina caring for her infant with help from animal carers and other females in the troop, who take on aunt-like roles. Perth Zoo’s later reports also describe female troop members helping with infant care. In a December 2025 update about a different baby, the zoo mentioned a specialised “aunty croak” used by other females.

The zoo’s account describes managed breeding and regional cooperation; it does not provide a current conservation-status assessment.
