The 2,700-kilometre road transfer took about 42 hours, bringing Perth Zoo’s elephant era to a close and completing Monarto’s founding herd of five Asian elephants.
Where is Putra Mas now?
Putra Mas is at Monarto Safari Park in South Australia. Monarto reported his safe arrival on 5 November 2025. The park described him as a 35-year-old male Asian elephant at the time of the move.

His arrival brought together Monarto’s founding herd: Putra Mas, Permai, Burma, Pak Boon and Tang Mo. Permai had moved from Perth Zoo in January 2025; Burma came from Auckland Zoo, while Pak Boon and Tang Mo came from Taronga Zoo. Monarto Safari Park’s account of the herd describes the group as the park’s founding Asian elephant herd.

How the transfer was carried out
Perth Zoo said its elephants were gradually acclimatised to custom-built transport crates through crate training. Ahead of Putra Mas’s transfer, the zoo said senior veterinarians and elephant carers would monitor him around the clock during the journey. At Monarto, his crate was craned into the habitat, and he calmly walked into the barn. The park said he rested and explored as teams monitored his adjustment.
Why did Perth Zoo move its elephants?
Perth Zoo said it had announced in 2018 that its elephants would move on after Tricia’s death in 2022. In its explanation, the zoo said its inner-city site did not have the space needed to care appropriately for a full herd, and framed the decision as part of its development as a modern conservation organisation with animal welfare at its centre. It also said Permai had been left without her matriarch and needed the company of other female elephants.

In an August 2025 media release, Perth Zoo Director of Life Sciences John Lemon said: “He is also one of the most intelligent bulls I’ve worked with in my 30-year career.” The same release described a planned 14-hectare habitat at Monarto. That is Perth Zoo’s figure in the 2025 release; other official descriptions have used different habitat figures, so the measurements should not be treated as a single settled number.

What does “127-year zoo chapter” mean?
The “127-year” wording describes the length of Perth Zoo’s elephant chapter, but the available accounts do not establish an independently sourced starting year for that count. It is safer to treat it as the chapter’s stated span rather than infer a precise year when elephants first arrived.
