Pet-friendly campgrounds can offer tent sites, RV spaces, cabins, or glamping units—but the label does not mean pets can enter every rental, use every shared area, or join you on every trail. Choose by both sleeping setup and the property’s rules for your specific pet and site.
What types of pet-friendly campground stays are available?
The main difference is how you sleep and what equipment you bring. A campground may offer more than one accommodation type, with separate rules or amenities for each.

Tent sites
Tent camping means bringing a tent and pitching it at a designated site. Check whether the site is drive-up or hike-in, what equipment it permits, and whether the tent pad fits your setup. At Dog Canyon Campground in Guadalupe Mountains National Park, tent sites are hike-in from parking, include tent pads and picnic tables, and do not accommodate RV parking. Recreation.gov’s Dog Canyon listing gives the site-specific details.
RV sites
RV sites are intended for an RV or another vehicle permitted by the campground. Do not assume every site fits every vehicle or includes hookups. Dog Canyon lists separate RV sites, but has no hookups, showers, or dump stations. Check your vehicle’s length and the site’s equipment limits before booking.

Cabins
A cabin is a fixed-roof rental, so you do not need to bring a tent or RV. Campgrounds may have cabins, but pet permission can depend on the particular unit or additional property conditions. Confirm that pets are allowed inside the exact cabin you plan to reserve.
Glamping
Glamping generally means a more furnished or distinctive stay, which may include a furnished tent. The term does not guarantee a particular level of comfort, amenities, or pet access. Verify the furnishings and pet rules for the specific unit.

It can mean pets are allowed in some parts of a property—not that they may enter every rental or accompany you throughout the surrounding recreation area. The National Park Service advises visitors that park rules differ and to check the rules for their destination in its guidance on camping with animals.

For example, Dog Canyon permits pets in the campground and along the park road, but not on any trails. Great Smoky Mountains National Park allows pets in campgrounds when confined or on a leash no longer than six feet; pets are not allowed on trails there either. Those are rules for those locations, not a nationwide standard. Check the current rules for your destination.
What pet rules should you check before booking?
- Permission for the exact site or unit: Confirm pets may stay in the selected tent site, RV site, cabin, or glamping accommodation—not just somewhere on the property.
- Where pets can go: Check access to trails, roads, shared facilities, and other common areas.
- Restraint and supervision: Look for leash-length limits, confinement requirements, and rules about leaving pets unattended or in vehicles.
- Pet limits and costs: Ask about pet-count or size limits and any additional fees. KOA’s general policy directs guests to check individual campground rules and notes that some locations may charge for additional pets; see its pet policy and the specific location’s terms.
- Noise and cleanup: Check local requirements for waste disposal, barking, and other nuisance rules.
Rules and fees are property-specific and may change. For public campgrounds, use the current park and reservation listing; for private campgrounds, confirm directly with the property if the listing leaves a question unanswered. The National Park Service’s campground standards address posted and enforced rules, but do not replace checking a particular campground’s current pet policy.

How should you compare campgrounds for a trip with a pet?
- Match the sleeping setup to your equipment. Decide whether you need a tent site, RV space, cabin, or furnished stay. Check site access, allowable equipment, and vehicle dimensions.
- Confirm the facilities you need. Check for hookups, showers, dump stations, and other amenities rather than assuming they come with an RV or rental site.
- Map out where your pet is permitted. Confirm access to the accommodation, campground areas, roads, trails, and shared facilities relevant to your plans.
- Check supervision and restraint requirements. Review leash length, confinement, unattended-pet, and vehicle rules, then bring suitable restraint gear.
- Read the selected site’s booking details before reserving. Recreation.gov warns that a reservation may be refused if the site cannot accommodate the guest’s tent or RV. Compare the listing’s equipment limits with your actual setup.
What does one campground’s layout and pet policy look like?
Dog Canyon Campground illustrates why it helps to check the particular site and the surrounding rules rather than relying on a general “pet-friendly” label. Its Recreation.gov listing identifies 13 sites: nine tent sites and four RV sites, plus a group site. The tent sites are hike-in, and the RV sites are separate. Pets may be in the campground and along the park road, but the campground’s rules require a leash no longer than six feet, prohibit leaving pets unattended or inside vehicles, and exclude pets from all trails. Check the Dog Canyon listing for site details and current rules before travel.
