Pet hedgehogs need specialized care: a warm, secure enclosure, a solid-surface exercise wheel, an appropriate measured diet, and regular care from an exotic-mammal veterinarian. This guide focuses on pet four-toed (African pygmy) hedgehogs, not wild European hedgehogs; check local ownership laws before bringing one home.
What a pet hedgehog needs every day
Plan for individual housing, low-dust bedding, a hide, safe nighttime exercise, fresh water, regular cleaning, and preventive veterinary care. An animal’s age, health, and reproductive status can affect its care needs.
Before you bring a hedgehog home
Check whether ownership is legal
Rules may vary by state, county, and city, and some places prohibit ownership or require permits. Check the requirements that apply where you live before acquiring a hedgehog. The World Wildlife Fund advises prospective owners to check local laws; this general guidance is not a determination of legality for your location.
Find veterinary care first
Locate an exotic-mammal veterinarian who sees hedgehogs before acquisition. Ask about examinations, diagnostic testing, dental care, and urgent care. Signs of illness can be nonspecific, and an examination may need to be supported by testing.

Ask for the animal’s records
Request the animal’s approximate birth date, sex, current diet, weights, veterinary records, source information, and known history of illness or injury. These records help you prepare but cannot guarantee the animal is disease-free.
Habitat setup
Choose a secure, roomy enclosure
University of Illinois veterinary guidance describes a 2-by-3-foot enclosure as a minimum. Choose a solid floor and smooth sides that help prevent climbing and escape. Inspect doors, latches, corners, and gaps regularly, and keep the enclosure away from fall hazards.
Hedgehogs are solitary; house one per enclosure. Provide room for sleeping, feeding, exercise, hiding, and foraging.
Maintain a stable temperature
University of Illinois veterinary guidance recommends an enclosure temperature of 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C) and at least two thermometers. Keep the temperature stable and avoid drafts, direct sunlight, and uncontrolled heat sources.

If a hedgehog is cold, weak, unusually inactive, or difficult to rouse, check the enclosure and contact a veterinarian promptly rather than assuming it is sleeping.
Use safe bedding and a hide
Use clean, low-dust bedding without strong aromas. Merck Veterinary Manual identifies aromatic, dusty, or unsanitary bedding as a respiratory infection risk. Paper bedding is one option described in PetMD’s care guidance; ask your veterinarian about a suitable material for your setup.
Provide a cleanable hide with smooth edges and an opening large enough that the hedgehog cannot become stuck. Avoid sharp, splintered, frayed, or narrow accessories that could injure or trap the animal.

- ✔ SAFE - The axle-free design eliminates a dangerous center bar, reducing the risk of fur/tail entanglement, pet wrap-a-round, curvature of the spine, and other injuries.
- ✔ SILENT - Innovative dual ball-bearings create a whisper-silent spin. Two stainless steel ball-bearings are within the back plate of the wheel, ensuring the wheel glides smooth and silent. The bearings SPIN around the bolt as your pet runs, unlike annoying squeaky wheels on the market that have a center axle that creates friction and noise.
- ✔ SANITARY - Wheel completely disassembles for deep cleaning, no nooks for feces to hide in.
- ✔ IDEAL FOR - Hedgehogs, Rats, Sugar Gliders and other similar small animals (not suggested for chewers)
Clean on a schedule
- Daily: Remove feces, wet bedding, and uneaten moist food; check water equipment.
- During the week: Replace bedding when soiled and wash food and water equipment.
- Weekly: Thoroughly clean the enclosure, hide, bowls, and exercise equipment.
Adjust cleaning to the enclosure and the animal. A clean-looking hedgehog can still carry Salmonella, so hygiene remains important.

Provide safe nighttime exercise
Hedgehogs are nocturnal and need a safe way to exercise. Choose a stable wheel with a continuous, solid metal or plastic running surface. Merck Veterinary Manual and University of Illinois guidance warn that wire wheels can trap legs and cause severe injuries, including broken legs. Provide additional safe space for hiding and foraging.
Supervised exploration outside the enclosure can provide enrichment. Secure the room against escape and falls, remove access to hazards, and keep the animal away from food-preparation areas. Return it to its enclosure before leaving it unattended.
Feeding a pet hedgehog
Choose a staple and manage portions
Merck Veterinary Manual identifies commercially prepared hedgehog or insectivore kibble as the ideal staple. If that food is unavailable, it lists high-quality weight-management cat food as an alternative. Discuss the right choice and portion with a veterinarian rather than assuming all cat or dog foods are equivalent.
Merck gives a typical adult portion of approximately 3 to 4 teaspoons (15 to 20 mL) daily, adjusted for weight and activity. This is not a universal prescription: growing animals and reproductively active females may need a different feeding arrangement. Avoid free-choice feeding in adults, and transition to unfamiliar foods gradually because hedgehogs may be slow to accept them.

Watch for weight gain, progressive loss, or a sudden change in appetite. Weight reduction should be gradual and veterinarian-guided; rapid or poorly managed weight loss can be associated with hepatic lipidosis.
Use treats and supplements cautiously
Keep treats and invertebrate prey, such as mealworms or crickets, limited so they do not displace the staple diet. Merck states that balanced commercial diets do not require vitamin or mineral supplements. Avoid raw meat and eggs because of Salmonella risk, and avoid milk, which can cause diarrhea. Ask a veterinarian before making dietary changes or adding supplements.

Keep fresh water available
Provide fresh water continuously in a bowl or bottle the hedgehog reliably uses. Wash bowls and check bottles regularly for clogs, leaks, or a valve the animal cannot operate. When changing equipment or homes, verify that the hedgehog is drinking.
Health care and veterinary visits
Arrange preventive examinations
Arrange an examination after acquisition and ask an exotic-mammal veterinarian to set an ongoing preventive-care schedule. University of Illinois guidance recommends checkups every six months in one care article and yearly examinations in another, so these are published recommendations rather than a universal standard. Your veterinarian can advise based on the animal’s age, history, and health.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKnow the health problems hedgehogs can develop
Merck Veterinary Manual describes obesity, hepatic lipidosis, tumors, mites, oral and dental disorders, cardiovascular disease, pneumonia, and neurologic disease among concerns in four-toed hedgehogs. Wobbly hedgehog syndrome is a serious neurologic disease with unknown etiology in the cited reference. These conditions can have overlapping or nonspecific signs; a veterinarian must diagnose the cause.
Recognize warning signs
Contact a veterinarian promptly for appetite loss, diarrhea, marked lethargy or weakness, breathing difficulty, abnormal movement, persistent scratching, oral bleeding or difficulty eating, visible masses, or unexplained changes in urination or defecation. Coldness, difficulty waking, or inability to uncurl also warrants prompt assessment.
Do not give antibiotics, mite medication, pain medicine, or supplements without veterinary direction. Similar signs can have different causes, and an inappropriate treatment can delay care or cause harm.

- Wash hands with soap and water after handling the hedgehog or its food, feces, bedding, enclosure, or equipment.
- Keep the animal and its supplies away from kitchens and food-preparation, serving, or storage areas.
- Do not clean enclosure items in a kitchen sink, or eat and drink while handling the hedgehog or cleaning its habitat.
- Do not kiss the animal or press it against your face.
Children younger than five, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of severe Salmonella illness. Use close adult supervision and supervised handwashing for children; a hedgehog may be an inappropriate pet for a child younger than five.
