Pet Sitter or Boarding: Which Is Better for Your Cat While You’re Away?

The best choice depends on your cat’s temperament, health and the care a provider can actually deliver. Use this practical comparison to choose between a sitter and a cattery.

Neither option is automatically best. Choose the arrangement your individual cat can cope with and the caregiver can reliably deliver. A trusted sitter can preserve familiar territory for a cat unsettled by travel or new smells. A well-run boarding cattery can be the better fit for a cat that adapts to new surroundings, for an owner who needs dependable on-site observation, or when the facility can provide care a home visitor cannot. Temperament, medical needs, absence length, transport tolerance and the provider’s actual procedures should decide the choice—not the slogan that cats always prefer home or that boarding is always safer.

Start with the cat, not the category

Every cat reacts differently to separation, travel and unfamiliar people. A confident cat that has previously stayed away may settle in a cattery, while a territorial or fearful cat may eat, sleep and use the litter tray more normally at home. Previous experience, age, health and personality all influence that response. Scottish Government welfare guidance advises considering a cat’s individual needs when arranging care away from its usual home (Scottish Government code of practice).

Assess the care that must happen each day before comparing providers. A sitter who only drops in briefly may not suit a cat that becomes distressed when left alone, and a cattery’s advertised “staff on site” does not by itself prove continuous monitoring. Ask what will happen at the exact times your cat eats, receives medicine, needs play or must be checked.

Pet sitter versus boarding cattery at a glance

Decision point In-home sitter Boarding cattery
Territory and travel Your cat stays in its own rooms and avoids a journey; this can help a cat that relies on familiar surroundings. The cat encounters transport, new sounds, smells and sights, which some cats find stressful.
Human presence Coverage depends on the sitter’s visit length, frequency and whether they sleep at the property. Confirm the schedule in writing. Staff can observe cats at the facility, but verify staffing hours, overnight arrangements and actual checks rather than assuming 24-hour care.
Medication and monitoring The sitter must be competent, available at the required times and able to recognize deterioration. Ask exactly how medicines are stored and given, who performs the task, and what veterinary support is available.
Contact with other cats No shared facility exposure, provided the home is secure and the sitter follows indoor/outdoor rules. Inspect unit separation, escape prevention, hygiene, ventilation and whether cats can see or touch one another.
Logistics Arrange keys, a backup person, supplies, emergency authorization and a way to receive updates. Check licensing where applicable, vaccination requirements, transport, opening and collection times, space and availability.

When an in-home sitter is the stronger fit

Familiar surroundings reduce the main stressor

Home care removes the cattery journey and keeps food bowls, litter trays, hiding places and daily smells in known locations. This may be particularly helpful for a cat that panics in a carrier, has reacted badly to previous moves, or becomes withdrawn around unfamiliar animals. It is not a guarantee of calm: the cat still has to tolerate the sitter’s visits and the periods when nobody is present.

Vceoa 17.5"x11"x11" Pet Carrier for Cats
  • Pet Carrier: 17.5” L x 11” W x 11” H, Recommended max load of 16 lbs cats small dogs. Please do not choose your carrier based on weight--please reference your pet's length and height in selecting a pet carrier size.
  • Fits for under-seat dimensions of most airlines. Every airline has a specific set of rules and regulations, please contact with airline before flying with your cats small dogs.
  • Mesh windows for ventilation, top and side entry with locking zippers for safety. Carrying handles, adjustable shoulder strap which can also be used as seatbelt, and back strap can fasten the pet carrier to your luggage.
  • Pet carrier comes with a removable base insert, which creates a solid surface for your pet to stand on, along with a removable & hand washable cozy fleece pet bed, which offers a cozy sleeping space for your traveling cats small dogs.
  • "Toys for pets, of textile materials". Mostly used as a Toy of Fabric Pet Home for pets playing and relaxing.

The visit plan must match the cat’s needs

“Someone will check in” is not a care plan. Agree on how often visits occur, how long each lasts, what interaction is expected and whether overnight presence is necessary. Cats Protection recommends leaving practical instructions for feeding, water, litter, indoor/outdoor access, personality and veterinary contacts (Going On Holiday Without Your Cat). VCA notes that a sitter who cannot stay continuously may be unsuitable for a pet that does not tolerate being alone (Pet Sitter Options).

What to verify before handing over the keys

  • Meet the sitter with your cat present and describe normal eating, drinking, litter and sleeping habits.
  • Demonstrate medication, grooming or special handling; ask the sitter to repeat the instructions so errors are exposed before departure.
  • Show the food, spare litter, cleaning materials, carrier, first-aid supplies and utility shutoffs.
  • Test the key, alarm and entry instructions. Leave a backup keyholder who can enter if the sitter is delayed.
  • Provide your veterinarian’s details, an emergency contact, permission limits for treatment and your travel contact method.
  • Set a reporting routine—such as a message after each visit—and define what requires an immediate call.
  • Ask what happens if the sitter is ill, locked out or unable to attend, and identify the named replacement.

There is no universally sufficient number of visits; the right schedule depends on age, health, temperament, feeding pattern and how well the cat copes alone. A kitten, geriatric cat or animal needing timed medication may require more coverage than a healthy adult that sleeps most of the day.

When boarding may be the better fit

Predictable on-site observation can solve a coverage problem

A reputable cattery gives the caregiver a controlled setting in which appetite, toileting and behavior can be checked during the day. That can be useful when your home cannot safely be accessed, when several visits would be impractical, or when the facility has staff with experience handling your cat’s treatment. Confirm the real staffing pattern and escalation process; “staffed” does not automatically mean someone watches every unit continuously.

A cattery should pass an in-person inspection

Visit before booking and ask to see the current facilities, not only photographs. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and the National Animal Welfare Trust recommend checking security, cleanliness, separation and care procedures (Choosing A Boarding Facility For Your Cat; Choosing a Boarding Cattery).

  • Ask who gives medication, how doses are documented, and whether staff can safely perform your cat’s exact treatment.
  • Request the name and location of the regular veterinarian, the out-of-hours arrangement and the emergency-notification procedure.

Book early if local places are limited. Availability is not evidence of quality, so do not skip the visit simply because a vacancy is convenient.

Medical needs can change the answer

For a healthy cat with straightforward feeding, either arrangement may work. Diabetes, seizure disorders, kidney disease, post-operative recovery, mobility limitations, respiratory problems, intensive grooming or multiple daily medicines require a more exact match. Ask your veterinarian whether the cat needs veterinary-supervised boarding or a level of observation beyond a normal household visit. Then ask each provider to describe, step by step, what it can safely do and what it cannot.

Compare the proposed plan against the prescription: dose, route, timing, storage, food requirement, monitoring signs and emergency threshold. A sitter who is kind but unavailable at the required time is not a safe medical plan; a cattery that accepts medication but has no veterinary backup may not be either. Send written instructions and the veterinarian’s contact details, and provide enough medicine for the stay plus a clearly labelled reserve if the veterinarian approves.

Licensing and legal checks depend on where you live

England

In England, Defra’s statutory guidance says commercial cat boarding within scope requires a local-authority licence. The same guidance treats care in the owner’s home, such as cat sitting, as outside that particular licensing requirement. Ask to see the cattery’s current licence and check any conditions attached to it (Defra cat boarding licensing guidance, updated 1 June 2026).

  • Top door can swing open to the left or right for easy access and convenience
  • Plenty of ventilation on sides, top, and back of the carrier

The guidance states: “Cats must not be taken from their individual units except in an emergency or for veterinary treatment.” That rule illustrates why you should ask how exercise, cleaning, handling and emergencies are managed rather than assuming cats roam communally.

Scotland and elsewhere

Scotland’s separate code says all boarding catteries must be licensed by the local authority (Welfare of cats: code of practice). Requirements differ across UK nations and other countries, so verify the rules with your own local authority. Do not infer that an English licensing statement applies in another jurisdiction.

Prepare the cat and the caregiver

If you choose a sitter

  1. Keep the routine stable in the days before departure; avoid introducing new food or major household changes.
  2. Write a one-page care sheet covering meals, water, litter, play, hiding places, indoor/outdoor rules, behavior changes and medication.
  3. Place the carrier where the sitter can reach it, and show the emergency route to the veterinarian.
  4. Test access, alarms and the backup keyholder. Have the sitter complete a trial visit while you are still nearby.
  5. Leave contact details, authorization instructions and a clear definition of an emergency.

If you choose boarding

  1. Introduce the carrier gradually well before the trip. Leave it open with bedding or treats, then build up to short, calm journeys; Cats Protection recommends positive carrier familiarization (How to prepare your cat for a cattery stay).
  2. Confirm the cattery’s vaccination documents, parasite requirements, medication policy and arrival procedure with your veterinarian and the facility.
  3. Ask whether the cattery permits the cat’s usual food, a familiar blanket and a safe item carrying home scent. Label everything.
  4. Give written feeding and medical instructions, your veterinarian’s details and an emergency contact at check-in.
  5. Transport the cat in a secure, correctly sized carrier. Keep the journey quiet and avoid opening the carrier outside a secured room.

Compare quotes on the same care, not on the headline price

No single current price reliably represents sitting or boarding across locations. Request itemized local quotes for the same number of days, visit duration or overnight coverage, medication, transport, holiday surcharges and emergency handling. A cheaper quote may simply provide fewer visits or less supervision. Ask what is included before treating two totals as comparable.

A practical decision sequence

  1. List non-negotiables. Write down medication times, monitoring signs, feeding pattern, litter needs, indoor/outdoor rules and the maximum time the cat can safely be alone.
  2. Rate travel tolerance. Consider carrier behavior and previous trips, not a general belief about cats.
  3. Match the coverage. Reject any sitter or cattery that cannot provide the required presence, treatment or emergency response.
  4. Inspect and rehearse. Meet the sitter or tour the cattery, then run a trial visit or short stay if the provider offers one.
  5. Choose the plan with the fewest unverified assumptions. Get the schedule, fees, contacts, medication process and backup arrangements in writing.

If both options meet the care requirements, favor the one that produces the calmer observable response during the meeting, trial visit or previous experience. If neither can safely deliver the required monitoring, discuss veterinary-supervised boarding or another professional arrangement with your veterinarian rather than accepting a marginal plan.
