The design has a curved interior, high sides, a low entry and an easy-grip lip. Petmate says it can be used with clumping, pellet, lightweight and crystal litter. The product is not enclosed, so cats have an open top rather than a covered entrance. The low entry is intended to make getting in easier, while the taller walls are intended to help contain litter. Does the non-stick coating work?
Petmate and PetFusion claim that the coating reduces litter sticking by “up to 70%.” That figure appears on the manufacturer’s product listing; it is not an independently measured result, and the listing does not establish the test conditions behind it. Treat it as a product claim rather than a promised reduction in sticking at home.

In a review updated September 26, 2025, Cats.com reported an overall score of 4/5 after its reviewer exposed 11 cats to the box. With the litter used in that review, the reviewer found scooping easy and said the rounded bottom helped a scoop reach the interior. After emptying the pan, the reviewer described the bottom as nearly spotless apart from one spot that needed wiping. The Cats.com reviewer also questioned whether the coating would remain durable over time. Chewy customer reviews include mixed experiences: some customers disagree with the non-stick description, while others report that the box is easy to enter or clean. Will it fit your cat and your home?
Start with the stated footprint—22.6 × 18.1 inches—and check the usable floor area inside the pan, not just the outside measurements. An 8-inch overall height and high sides may suit a cat that scatters litter, but the box still needs enough floor space for your cat to turn around and use it comfortably. The sources do not give a measured entry height, so “low entry” is a relative description rather than a specific clearance.

The listing calls it low, but provides no entry-height measurement with which to compare your cat’s step or jump.
- For a cat that kicks litter: The high sides may help contain scatter, though the open top cannot contain litter thrown above the walls.
- For a small room: Measure the floor area where the box will sit, including space to approach and clean it. Its listed dimensions do not account for extra clearance around it.
- For a preferred litter type: Petmate lists clumping, pellet, lightweight and crystal litter as compatible. That does not establish identical sticking or scooping results across those types.
What should you compare before buying?
Compare the BetterBox with any alternative using the features that affect your cat’s access and your cleaning routine—not the non-stick percentage alone.

Who is the BetterBox best suited to?
The BetterBox is worth considering if you want an open pan with taller walls, a lower described entry and a curved bottom that may make scooping easier. The independent review offers encouraging cleaning observations, but it does not establish that the coating will continue to perform over time or that the manufacturer’s “up to 70%” claim will match your experience.
Before buying, compare its dimensions with your available space and your cat’s size and mobility. If the entry height is critical, seek a measurement or inspect the pan directly. Check the current price and return policy with the seller, since price and stock can change.
