Planted Aquarium Lighting: How to Choose and Adjust a Light

Choose planted aquarium lighting by matching fixture coverage and adjustable, plant-relevant output to your tank and plants—not by brightness or wattage alone.

Choose a planted-aquarium light that covers your tank, can be positioned to reach your plants, and offers plant-relevant output information or adjustable intensity. There is no single brightness setting, PAR target, or daily schedule supported for every aquarium: plant needs, tank depth, fixture height, and algae response all matter.

What light do I need for a planted aquarium?

Start with the plants and the aquarium footprint, not a wattage number or a fixture that simply looks bright. Aquatic plants need light to grow, but their needs vary; Purdue Extension’s Planting Your Aquarium notes that bunch plants need strong light. A light suitable for one planting may not deliver enough to another.

An LED planted aquarium light is a relevant category to consider. Compare each fixture’s coverage, output controls, mounting options, and any published PAR or PPFD information. Iowa State Extension notes that aquarium lights can provide more PAR than traditional bulbs, but that observation is not a comparison of current models or a recommendation of a particular fixture.

Compare fixtures by more than appearance

  • Coverage: Check that the fixture spans the tank and that its light reaches the plants where they grow, including toward the edges and bottom.
  • Plant-usable output: Prefer PAR or PPFD information at a mounting distance relevant to your setup, when the manufacturer provides it. A single output figure does not guarantee growth in a different tank.
  • Adjustability: Dimming or other gradual output control can make it easier to respond if plants struggle or algae increases.
  • Mounting and height: Choose a fixture that can be positioned appropriately over the tank. Height affects both intensity and how broadly light spreads.
  • Spectrum and appearance: Consider whether the light is intended for plant use and whether its appearance suits you. Kelvin is an approximate color description, not a complete account of the light spectrum.

What does PAR mean for aquarium plants?

PAR stands for photosynthetically active radiation: the range of light used in photosynthesis. Oklahoma State University Extension identifies the usual PAR wavelength range as 400–700 nm in its general plant-lighting guidance; that range describes wavelengths, not a target brightness for an aquarium.

PPFD describes the amount of photosynthetically active light reaching a surface, while PPF describes the fixture’s total output in that range. For plant placement, PPFD is more directly relevant than total fixture output, but it still needs context: the reading depends on where and how far from the light it is measured.

Lumens measure brightness as perceived by human vision, so they do not directly show how much plant-usable light reaches leaves. Wattage describes electrical power, not plant-level light delivery. Iowa State Extension’s explanation of lumens, Kelvin, and PPF and its discussion of plant-light measures explain why these values answer different questions. Use PAR or PPFD information when available, but do not treat any one measurement as a guarantee of aquarium growth.

How do fixture height and tank coverage affect light?

Moving a light closer generally raises intensity over a smaller area; raising it spreads light more broadly but reduces intensity at a given surface. A fixture that looks adequate at the water surface may not distribute light evenly across a deeper tank or reach plants in less-exposed positions. Iowa State Extension discusses this distance-and-coverage trade-off for supplemental plant lighting; its guidance is general, not an aquarium-specific measurement or prescription.

When comparing a planted aquarium LED light, look for output information at a stated distance and consider whether the mounting arrangement lets you cover the full footprint. Do not compare figures taken at different distances as if they described the same delivery to your plants.

How long should aquarium lights be on for live plants?

The available guidance does not establish one daily photoperiod that suits all planted aquariums. Avoid assuming that a houseplant schedule or a universal aquarium timer setting is right for submerged plants. Instead, use a consistent schedule, observe how plants and algae respond over time, and make measured adjustments rather than changing several lighting conditions at once.

Can aquarium lights cause algae?

Light is one part of the aquarium’s overall balance. Purdue Extension says rapid algae growth can indicate too much light, while its aquarium guide also warns that insufficient light prevents plants from growing. It does not establish that light is the only cause of algae, so treat a bloom as a reason to assess the setup rather than proof that the fixture alone is responsible.

If you adjust lighting, change one variable at a time—such as intensity or fixture height—and give the aquarium time to show a response. A dimmable fixture can make gradual changes easier than an all-or-nothing setting. Do not assume that increasing brightness will make plants healthier or grow faster.

How to choose and tune your aquarium light

  1. Identify the plants and where they are planted. Account for differences in plant needs and placement; bunch plants, for example, are identified by Purdue Extension as needing strong light.
  2. Check the tank footprint and depth. Look for a fixture that can cover the aquarium and reach the plants rather than judging by surface brightness alone.
  3. Review the available output data. Prefer PAR or PPFD figures with a stated measurement distance when available. Treat lumens, Kelvin, and watts as different specifications, not substitutes for plant-level delivery.
  4. Choose practical mounting and controls. Make sure the fixture can sit at a useful height and, where possible, be adjusted gradually.
  5. Observe before changing settings. Keep a consistent lighting routine, watch plant growth and algae, and alter one lighting variable at a time if adjustment is needed.

These steps help match light delivery to a particular aquarium without pretending there is a universal PPFD target or photoperiod. Tank depth, fixture distance, plant choice, and other husbandry conditions all affect the result.
