Polydactyl cats are born with extra toes. The trait is genetic, can appear in cats of many backgrounds, and usually calls for one practical bit of extra attention: checking every claw.
1. Polydactyly means extra digits
A typical cat has 18 toes: five on each front paw and four on each hind paw. Polydactyly is the presence of additional digits. The number and placement vary from cat to cat, so there is no single polydactyl paw pattern. The Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum describes the usual arrangement and its resident cats.

2. Extra toes often make a paw look like a mitten
Extra digits commonly appear on the front paws, where they can widen the foot and create a mitten-like outline. But appearances differ: an extra toe is not necessarily positioned or shaped like an opposable thumb, and not every polydactyl cat has the same distinctive-looking paws. 3. Polydactyly is a trait, not a general cat breed
A cat can be polydactyl without belonging to a particular breed. The Hemingway Home & Museum explicitly says polydactyl cats are not a specific breed; the term describes the extra-toe trait. Cats with varied appearances and ancestry can have it.

4. Hemingway’s famous cats trace back to Snow White
The Hemingway Home & Museum says a ship’s captain gave Ernest Hemingway a six-toed cat named Snow White, and that some of the home’s cats descend from her. The museum currently reports nearly 60 resident polydactyl cats. That is a changing count at one site, not an estimate of how common polydactyly is in cats generally.
5. There is more than one genetic route to extra toes
Known feline polydactyly variants affect a regulatory region involved in limb development. In plain terms, inherited changes in a genetic control sequence can alter developmental signals and produce extra digits. OMIA’s feline polydactyly entry summarizes this mechanism, including the ZRS enhancer near the LMBR1 gene and its role in regulating SHH expression.

It is misleading to call every case the result of one identical “Hemingway gene.” Research on Maine Coons has documented genetic heterogeneity: different lines can have different associated variants. Those findings do not establish that every domestic cat with extra toes has the same variant or inheritance pattern. The Maine Coon study by Hamelin and colleagues addresses this variation.

6. Extra toes can turn up in different breed contexts
Polydactyly is not exclusive to one breed, although some breed populations are associated with it more often. PetMD names Maine Coons and Pixiebobs among examples while noting the trait can occur in any cat. Registry terminology is a separate matter: TICA’s Maine Coon breed-group standard includes Maine Coon Polydactyl in its classification. That registry treatment does not make polydactyly itself a general breed.

7. Sailor stories are popular, but the origin story is not settled
Polydactyl cats are often linked in popular accounts with sailors and ships. Such stories may help explain why the Hemingway connection is so memorable, but the sources available here do not establish a definitive historical route by which the trait spread. Treat a sailor connection as lore or hypothesis, not a proven explanation for every polydactyl population.
8. More toes do not prove better hunting or grip
Claims that extra digits give cats superior traction, climbing ability, or hunting skill are speculative. Toe count alone is not evidence that a cat has a functional advantage. PetMD discusses these claims without establishing them as fact.

9. The main care task is remembering every claw
Some extra claws may not touch the ground, so they may not wear down naturally and can overgrow. When grooming, inspect all of your cat’s claws, including those between or beside the more obvious toes, and trim them as appropriate. Ordinary cat nail clippers are generally the relevant tool; polydactyly by itself does not mean a cat needs special equipment or treatment.
If a claw is painful, embedded, or difficult to manage, ask a veterinarian for help rather than trying to treat it yourself. The care concern described in the veterinary-reviewed source is practical nail maintenance, not a need for a special diet, supplement, or procedure for every polydactyl cat.
