Pradofloxacin is a prescription fluoroquinolone antibiotic. For cats it is sold as Veraflox pradofloxacin oral suspension, and it is given only on a veterinarian’s prescription. What it is approved to treat, and the dose that applies, depends on the country and the product form. The same drug name can therefore correspond to different indications and dosing in the United States and in Europe, so this guide explains the official labeling on each side and what it means for a cat owner.
What pradofloxacin is
Pradofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibacterial drugs. Veraflox is the named feline product. The U.S. label, published on DailyMed by Elanco US Inc. and updated November 11, 2025, identifies Veraflox oral suspension for cats at 25 mg/mL and states that federal law restricts the drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. The European product information for the 25 mg/mL suspension is a separate document with its own indications and limits, covered below.
This article draws on official product labeling. It does not rely on independent clinical trials or treatment guidelines, so it describes what each label says rather than how veterinarians across practices choose to use the drug.
What it is approved to treat
The two regions do not describe the same set of infections, and the difference matters when a cat owner compares notes with another pet owner or reads an online summary.

United States: skin infections
The U.S. label indicates Veraflox for skin infections, meaning wounds and abscesses, caused by susceptible strains of Pasteurella multocida, Streptococcus canis, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus felis, and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. Only these labeled bacteria and infections are covered by the U.S. indication.
Europe: skin infections and upper respiratory infections
European product information for the 25 mg/mL suspension lists two groups of indications. The first is acute upper respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible strains of Pasteurella multocida, Escherichia coli, and the Staphylococcus intermedius group, which includes S. pseudintermedius. The second is wounds and abscesses caused by susceptible P. multocida and the Staphylococcus intermedius group. The respiratory indication is a European one. It does not appear in the U.S. label and should not be assumed for a U.S. prescription.
Dosage: what each label states
The table below sets out each published regimen next to the jurisdiction and product it belongs to. These are label figures, not guidance for an individual cat. The prescribing veterinarian sets the dose and duration for a specific patient.
| Jurisdiction and product | Labeled indication | Stated dose | Stated duration | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States, Veraflox oral suspension 25 mg/mL | Skin infections (wounds and abscesses) from labeled susceptible bacteria | 7.5 mg/kg (3.4 mg/lb) body weight, once daily | Seven consecutive days | U.S. DailyMed Veraflox label |
| Europe, Veraflox 25 mg/mL oral suspension | Upper respiratory infections and skin infections from listed susceptible bacteria | 5 mg/kg once daily; syringe graduations give a range of 5–7.5 mg/kg | Not stated in the sections reviewed for this guide | European Commission product information (dated June 11, 2018) |
| Europe, tablet product information (feline acute upper respiratory infection) | Acute upper respiratory infection in cats | 3 mg/kg once daily | Five days | European tablet product information, as cited in the European Commission document |
Two points keep these figures from being mixed up. First, the U.S. label asks that the cat be weighed accurately, that the suspension be shaken, and that the provided syringe be used. Second, it asks that a lesion sample be collected for culture and susceptibility testing before treatment starts. If the cat has not improved within three to four days, the label tells the veterinarian to reconsider the diagnosis and consider other therapy.

Side effects
The European product information describes mild, transient gastrointestinal disturbances, including vomiting, which it describes as rare. The U.S. label includes a field study that gives more specific counts. The figures are small and come from a single study, so they show what was observed in that study and do not establish how often a cat will react.
| Reaction (U.S. field study, as reported in the label) | Pradofloxacin-treated cats | Vehicle-treated cats |
|---|---|---|
| Diarrhea or loose stools | 7 of 190 | 2 of 92 |
| Vomiting | 1 of 190 | 1 of 92 |
The U.S. label notes that some cats may have had more than one reaction or occurrence, so the counts describe events rather than separate cats in every case. Any new signs during treatment, such as persistent vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or a change in appetite, should be reported to the veterinarian who prescribed the drug.
Safety warnings and populations that need extra caution
Both labels carry warnings about fluoroquinolones in general, but the details differ. Read the warnings for the product and region that applies to your cat.
- Retinal risk: The U.S. label states that fluoroquinolone use in cats has been associated with retinopathy and/or blindness.
- Hypersensitivity: Precautions in the labeling cover hypersensitivity reactions. Tell the veterinarian about any previous reaction to an antibiotic.
- Medicines and supplements: Both regions advise telling the veterinarian about every medicine and supplement the cat takes, because of the interactions described below.
The age and reproductive limits also differ between the two labels.

|---|---|---|

Where a row reads “Not stated,” the label reviewed for this guide does not address the condition. That does not mean the drug is safe in that group.
Interactions and the effect of food
Several common products can interfere with how the body absorbs or clears pradofloxacin. The U.S. label names the following:
- Antacids, sucralfate, and multivitamins containing divalent or trivalent cations, which may substantially reduce quinolone absorption.
- Theophylline, cimetidine, cyclosporine, and oral anticoagulants.
European product information adds dairy products containing calcium to the absorption concern, and it describes cautions for NSAIDs in animals with a history of seizures, as well as for theophylline and digoxin.
The U.S. pharmacokinetic section reports that food reduced the mean peak serum concentration of pradofloxacin by 53% and the mean exposure by 26% under the conditions studied. These figures explain why feeding timing matters to the prescriber, but they are not a schedule for a particular cat. Ask the veterinarian whether the dose should be given with or apart from food and medicines, and follow the instructions on the package.

Why antibiotic stewardship shapes the label
The European product information asks that susceptibility testing be used whenever possible. It also reserves fluoroquinolones for conditions that respond poorly to other antimicrobial classes, or that are expected to. The U.S. label makes the same broader point in direct terms:
“Prescribing antibacterial drugs in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection is unlikely to provide benefit to treated animals and may increase the risk of the development of drug-resistant animal pathogens.”
That sentence is from the Veraflox U.S. label, Elanco US Inc., published on DailyMed and updated November 11, 2025.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which label applies to your cat, and how current it is
Before comparing any dose or indication, check three things on the label your veterinarian gives you: the country of sale, the product form (suspension or tablet), and the revision date. The sources used here have different dates. The U.S. DailyMed label was updated November 11, 2025. The European Commission document is dated June 11, 2018. The European Medicines Agency page for Veraflox reports that its product information was last updated October 15, 2025, and the EMA page is at https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/medicines/veterinary/EPAR/veraflox. The older European PDF and the newer EMA page may not reflect identical wording, so the current product information in your country is the authoritative version. Your veterinarian’s written prescription and dispensing label override any general summary, including this one.
