For cats, the standard Proviable-DC capsule is labeled at one capsule daily for cats of all sizes, unless your veterinarian directs otherwise. The Proviable Kit for cats is a different, short-term option: it adds KP paste, which is labeled for 48–72 hours of use. Nutramax says there are no known side effects when the product is used according to package recommendations. Prolonged or excessive paste use can cause constipation, and cats that are critically ill, immunosuppressed, severely dehydrated, or vomiting need veterinary direction before any use.
Three Proviable products, and how they differ
Proviable is sold in several forms, and the names are easy to mix up. Before you look at dosage, confirm which product is in your hands, because the directions are not interchangeable.

Proviable-Forte should not be treated as a stronger version of Proviable-DC. The higher CFU figure is the only comparison the manufacturer material supports, and the two products should not be swapped based on that number alone. If you are considering Forte, ask your veterinarian which product fits your cat.

Dosage for cats
Label directions are general. They do not account for your cat’s weight, age, medical history, or current symptoms, so they are not individualized treatment advice. Nutramax updates its packaging and product pages from time to time, so the directions printed on your package and your veterinarian’s instructions take precedence over any summary, including this one.

Proviable-DC capsules
The labeled dose is one capsule daily for cats of all sizes, or as directed by your veterinarian. Nutramax says the capsule powder can be sprinkled over food. Capsules are described as suited to longer-term intestinal support when a veterinarian recommends them, which is different from the short-term use of the kit paste.

- Give 1 mL of paste by mouth, 2–3 times daily.
- Give one Proviable-DC capsule daily. Sprinkle the powder over food, or give it as the packaging describes.
- Limit the paste to 48–72 hours. The capsules continue until the supply is finished, as the label directs.
- If your cat has not improved within 48–72 hours, contact your veterinarian rather than extending the paste.
Giving Proviable with other medications
The paste contains kaolin and pectin. Nutramax says these ingredients could delay the absorption of some medications, so the two should be separated. The same guidance addresses capsules and antibiotics, since the manufacturer says separating them helps preserve the probiotic’s effectiveness.

If your cat takes several medications on a set schedule, write out the timing with your veterinarian or pharmacist before the first dose.

Side effects and safety
What the manufacturer says about side effects
Nutramax’s FAQ states: “There are no known side effects with Proviable when given according to package recommendations.” This is the manufacturer’s statement, not an independent guarantee that every cat will tolerate the product. Cats can react differently, and any unexpected change after starting it is worth raising with your veterinarian.
Constipation from prolonged or excessive paste use
The FAQ warns that KP paste should be used for only 48–72 hours unless a veterinarian directs otherwise. Prolonged use at higher-than-recommended levels could potentially cause constipation. If your cat strains, passes hard stools, or stops passing stool after using the paste, stop the paste and contact your veterinarian.

Cats that need veterinary guidance first
Nutramax says probiotics are not recommended for pets that are:
- critically ill
- immunosuppressed (have a suppressed immune system)
- severely dehydrated
- vomiting
For these cats, whether and how to use the supplement should be decided by a veterinarian, not by a label.
Storage
Store Proviable at room temperature, not exceeding 77°F (25°C), and out of direct sunlight. If you are concerned about temperatures above 77°F, Nutramax says refrigeration is acceptable, provided the product is not frozen. Check the expiration date on the package before use.
What the evidence does and does not show
Nutramax’s product pages describe the ingredients, labeled directions, and storage. They do not establish that Proviable cures the cause of diarrhea or any other disease, and the product should not be described that way. The phrase “supports intestinal health” describes the manufacturer’s intended use; it is not a treatment claim.
The only numeric efficacy figure located in the manufacturer material comes from a 2022 clinical education document sponsored by Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences. It reports a 32% to 41% reduction in the duration of self-limiting diarrhea, alone or with vomiting, compared with controls, across multiple randomized probiotic trials. This is a summary of general probiotic evidence, not a measurement of Proviable itself in cats, and it comes from the company that makes the product.
In short, the product information supports the label directions and safety cautions above. It does not on its own show how well Proviable performs in any individual cat.
