The Puli (pronounced “Poo-lee”; plural Pulik) is a medium-sized Hungarian herding dog best known for its naturally corded coat. Beneath the unusual appearance is a quick, athletic, people-focused working breed with a strong watchdog instinct and plenty of opinions of its own.

A Puli can be an excellent companion for an active household, but the coat is not low-maintenance and the breed is not automatically easy simply because it is compact. Prospective owners need to plan for regular training, mental work, careful socialization, and hands-on coat care.

Quick Puli facts

Characteristic Details
Origin Hungary; historically associated with the Magyar herding dogs of Asiatic origin
Original purpose Herding livestock and guarding the home or flock
Pronunciation “Poo-lee”
Size Medium; approximately 16–18 inches at the withers under the AKC ideal-and-tolerance system
Typical weight About 25–35 pounds as an AKC breed-page average
Life expectancy Approximately 10–15 years
Coat Dense double coat that may be corded or brushed
AKC group Herding Group
FCI classification Group 1, Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs, Section 1; not subject to an FCI working trial

The AKC recognized the Puli in 1936. The Puli Club of America, founded in 1951, is the AKC parent club. The breed’s official historical account comes from Hungary’s herding tradition; precise claims about an ancient migration route should be treated cautiously rather than presented as proven fact. See the FCI Standard No. 55 and the AKC breed information for the formal descriptions.

Appearance and size

The Puli is compact, muscular, agile, and roughly square in outline: its body length should correspond closely to its height at the withers. It is not a heavily built dog. Its working shape allows quick acceleration, sudden turns, and energetic movement while managing livestock.

Under the AKC standard, the ideal height is 17 inches for males and 16 inches for females, with a one-inch allowance above or below those ideals. The FCI standard gives sex-specific ranges:

  • Males: 39–45 cm, with an ideal of 41–43 cm; 13–15 kg
  • Females: 36–42 cm, with an ideal of 38–40 cm; 10–13 kg

These figures are not competing definitions of a “correct” Puli. The AKC breed page gives a broad average weight range, while the FCI standard gives conformation ranges for males and females.

The tail is heavily coated and carried in a flat curl over the croup. The nose is black, the eyes are dark brown, and the skin is strongly pigmented, appearing black or slate gray beneath the coat. Movement should be lively, quick, and agile rather than lumbering.

The famous Puli coat

The Puli has a double coat consisting of a coarser outer coat and a finer, woolly undercoat. When the two textures develop in the right balance, sections of coat naturally form into cords. “Dreadlocks” is a familiar nickname, but “cords” is the correct breed term.

Puppies are not born with mature cords. They begin with dense, wavy or curly hair. The undercoat commonly starts developing at around 8–10 months, after which the owner must repeatedly separate developing clumps by hand. A fully developed corded coat can take several years—up to about five, according to AKC breed-history guidance.

The AKC standard allows both corded and brushed coats in the show ring. A pet Puli may also be clipped short if that is the most practical choice for the household. Clipping does not make the dog a different variety, but the coat may take a long time to regrow into mature cords.

  • Rusty black
  • Black
  • All shades of gray

A white chest spot no larger than two inches is permitted under that standard. The FCI wording includes black, black with limited rusty or gray shading, fawn with a distinct black mask, gray in any shade, and pearl white without russet-gold shading. Its permitted forechest patch is no larger than 3 cm in diameter.

Breed websites sometimes show registration-code color lists that contain additional entries. Those lists should not be confused with the official conformation standard.

Is a Puli easy to groom?

No. A corded Puli is a high-maintenance dog, even though its coat may produce little loose hair around the home. Cords can merge into solid mats unless they are inspected and separated by hand. Dirt and debris can also become trapped close to the skin.

A practical coat-care routine includes:

  1. Inspect the coat frequently. Pay particular attention to the areas behind the ears, around the neck, in the armpits, between the legs, and near the tail.
  2. Separate developing cords by hand. Do not wait until several thin sections have fused into one dense mass.
  3. Bathe when necessary. The correct frequency depends on the dog’s lifestyle and coat condition.
  4. Dry the coat completely. Wet cords hold a great deal of water. If they remain damp, they can develop mildew, rot, and a strong odor.
  5. Maintain ears and nails. These routine tasks are needed whether the coat is corded, brushed, or clipped.

Before choosing the breed, watch an experienced Puli owner demonstrate bathing and drying. The Puli Club of America grooming resources cover corded coats, brushed coats, white-coat care, ear care, and keeping the dog clean between baths.

The coat’s low visible shedding does not make the Puli hypoallergenic. Allergens come from sources including dander and saliva, and no dog breed is completely allergen-free. Someone with allergies should spend time with adult Pulik before committing to one.

Puli temperament

The Puli is affectionate, intelligent, home-loving, and highly alert. It was developed to work closely with people, so it tends to notice changes in its environment and may be very engaged with its family. The AKC describes the breed as “sensibly suspicious,” an important detail for anyone expecting a dog that greets every visitor warmly.

That watchdog instinct can mean barking, alert behavior, or caution around unfamiliar people. Good socialization helps a puppy learn that ordinary visitors, sounds, handling, places, and friendly dogs are not automatically threats. It cannot guarantee that every adult Puli will be outgoing with strangers.

The breed standard describes the Puli as good with children, but individual temperament and the children’s behavior still matter. Young children should be supervised around any dog, and a Puli should have a quiet place where it can retreat undisturbed.

Pulik may also try to control movement. Herding behavior can appear as chasing, circling, blocking, or nipping at moving people, pets, or objects. These tendencies are manageable with training and appropriate outlets, but they should not be dismissed as a quirky phase that every dog will automatically outgrow.

Exercise and mental stimulation

A Puli needs more than a short walk around the block. It is a high-drive herding breed that benefits from a combination of physical activity, training, and problem-solving. Suitable outlets can include:

  • Agility and other dog sports
  • Obedience training
  • Herding activities where available and appropriate
  • Trick training and scent-based games
  • Structured walks with opportunities to explore
  • Food puzzles and short interactive training sessions

Mental exercise matters as much as physical exercise for this breed. Releasing energy without teaching self-control can simply produce a fitter, more persistent nuisance barker or herder.

Young puppies need age-appropriate activity rather than forced running, repetitive jumping, or prolonged exercise on hard surfaces. The appropriate amount varies with age, growth, health, terrain, and intensity. Short, controlled sessions and veterinary guidance are safer than applying a rigid “minutes per month of age” formula.

Training a Puli

The Puli is quick to learn, but intelligence does not always mean eager obedience. The breed can be headstrong and independent, and may perform a command in its own inventive way. Training works best when it is consistent, fair, rewarding, and varied.

  1. Start socialization early. Introduce new people, handling, surfaces, sounds, and environments gradually and positively.
  2. Use short sessions. Several brief sessions are usually more productive than repetitive drilling.
  3. Reward the behavior you want. Food, toys, play, and access to interesting activities can all be useful rewards.
  4. Teach an alternative to herding. A cue such as “touch,” “place,” or “come away” gives the dog a clear job when people begin moving.
  5. Train calm behavior. Settle-on-a-mat work and reinforced quiet can be especially useful for an alert watchdog breed.
  6. Practice handling. Regular, pleasant examination of the ears, feet, nails, skin, and coat makes future grooming easier.

Harsh methods are a poor substitute for clear training. They can increase fear or conflict in a watchful dog. If barking, chasing, or stranger-related behavior is difficult to manage, work with a qualified reward-based trainer or veterinary behavior professional.

Health and choosing a breeder

No screening program can guarantee a disease-free dog, but health records give a buyer useful information about the parents. The Puli Club of America’s current breeder guidelines identify these CHIC-related tests:

Screening Typical registry or method
Hips OFA or PennHIP evaluation
Patellas OFA evaluation
Degenerative myelopathy OFA DNA test
Eyes CERF/OFA eye examination, updated every three years

The club also lists elbow, cardiac, and thyroid evaluations and BAER hearing testing as additional tests that breeders may perform. Ask the breeder for the registered names of the sire and dam, then check the results yourself in the OFA database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A CHIC number means that the dog completed the breed-specific testing requirements in effect at the time and that results were made publicly available. It does not mean every result was normal, and it is not a guarantee that the dog will never develop an inherited disorder.

Who is the Puli suited to?

A Puli may suit an owner who:

  • Enjoys training and interactive activities
  • Can provide daily physical and mental work
  • Is comfortable managing an alert, sometimes suspicious temperament
  • Has time for regular coat inspection and maintenance
  • Will socialize and train consistently from puppyhood

It may be a poor match for someone seeking a quiet, highly sociable, wash-and-wear dog or a breed that can be left without meaningful activity for long periods. Apartment living is not automatically impossible, but barking, exercise needs, and access to suitable outdoor activity must be planned carefully.

Common Puli misconceptions

Claim What is more accurate
Puli puppies are born with dreadlocks. They are born with dense, wavy or curly hair; mature cords develop later.
The coat never needs grooming. Cords need hand separation, bathing, drying, and regular inspection.
The breed does not shed at all. Loose hair may remain caught in the coat, so visible shedding can be low without being zero.
Every Puli is friendly with strangers. The breed can be watchful or suspicious; socialization and individual temperament matter.
Every Puli must be corded. The AKC standard permits both corded and brushed coats, and pets may be clipped.
A CHIC number proves all tests were normal. It confirms completion and publication of the required tests, not normal results.

The current FCI standard was published on October 29, 2013, with the English document dated December 6, 2013. The AKC standard was approved in 1983 and reformatted in 1990. For exact show requirements, use the current standard of the organization governing the event.

FAQ

Are Puli dogs good family pets?

They can be affectionate and rewarding family dogs when their exercise, training, socialization, and coat-care needs are met. They are not guaranteed to be relaxed with strangers and should be supervised with children like any dog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much grooming does a Puli need?

A corded Puli needs frequent coat inspection and hand separation, plus bathing and thorough drying. Neglected cords can fuse into mats and retain moisture. Brushed or clipped coats still need routine grooming.

Do Puli dogs shed?

They have low visible shedding because loose hair can remain trapped in the coat, but they do not shed absolutely nothing. The breed is also not guaranteed to be hypoallergenic.

How much exercise does a Puli need?

The Puli needs daily physical activity combined with mental work such as training, scent games, agility, or other interactive activities. Puppies need short, controlled, age-appropriate exercise rather than forced endurance work.

Are Puli dogs easy to train?

They learn quickly but can be independent and headstrong. Short, varied, reward-based sessions are generally more effective than harsh methods or mindless repetition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What health tests should Puli breeders provide?

The Puli Club of America’s current guidelines identify hip, patella, degenerative myelopathy, and eye screening as CHIC-related requirements for member breeders. Buyers should verify the parents’ actual results in the OFA database.

The Bottom Line

The Puli is a lively Hungarian herding dog with a distinctive corded coat, strong intelligence, and a natural watchdog temperament. Its size is manageable, but its needs are not trivial: expect daily engagement, thoughtful socialization, varied training, and substantial hands-on grooming. Choose a breeder who provides verifiable health records, and choose the breed only if you genuinely want an active working companion rather than a decorative low-maintenance dog.
