The right food for an American Bulldog depends on life stage, expected adult size, body condition, activity, and health—not the breed name on the bag. Feed a puppy a complete growth diet; if the dog is expected to be large, use a formula whose adequacy statement covers growth of large-sized dogs. Feed a mature dog a complete adult-maintenance diet. An older dog does not automatically need “senior” food: there are no AAFCO nutrient requirements specifically for senior pets, so a healthy older dog may remain on adult-maintenance food.
Read the nutritional adequacy statement and feeding directions on the actual package, then adjust portions as your dog’s condition and activity change. A veterinarian should guide diet changes for disease, persistent weight change, or uncertainty about growth.

Start with the nutritional adequacy statement
The most reliable first check is the label’s nutritional adequacy statement, not the words “puppy,” “adult,” or “senior” on the front of the package. AAFCO recognizes growth, adult maintenance, gestation and lactation, and all-life-stages uses. Its guidance explains that growing dogs need nutrients in different quantities and ratios from mature dogs. The statement tells you which of those uses the food is formulated to meet. See AAFCO’s label guide for the wording to look for.
A food labeled complete and balanced for an appropriate life stage is intended to supply all required nutrients when fed as directed. “All life stages” is not a separate puppy category; it means the food is formulated to meet growth and adult-maintenance profiles. For a puppy, confirm that the growth claim includes the size range that applies to your dog.

What the 37-parameter figure means
AAFCO says its dog nutrient profiles contain 37 nutritional parameters. That number describes the scope of the profile, not a score for a particular product and not proof that one food is better than another. Use the adequacy statement, feeding directions, and your dog’s response together.
Choosing food for an American Bulldog puppy
Use a complete growth formula
Until your dog has finished growing, select food with an adequacy statement for growth or for all life stages. Growth formulas account for the different nutrient quantities and ratios puppies need. Do not switch solely because the puppy reaches a certain birthday: the reviewed guidance does not establish one universal American Bulldog transition age.
Check the large-size growth wording when it applies
American Bulldogs vary in projected adult size, so assess the individual puppy rather than assuming every dog belongs to one size category. If your veterinarian expects the puppy to mature as a large dog, look for an adequacy statement that specifically supports growth of large-sized dogs. AAHA notes that some large- and giant-breed dogs may not reach skeletal maturity until closer to 15–16 months and advises keeping them lean while avoiding excessive calcium during growth. That is general large- and giant-dog guidance, not a breed-wide maturity timetable for American Bulldogs. The relevant AAHA discussion is at AAHA’s age-specific and breed-specific diet guidance.

Why lean growth matters
Overfeeding a growing dog increases the risk of excessive body condition while the skeleton is developing. Use the package amount as a starting point, monitor the puppy’s shape and weight, and ask your veterinarian to adjust the plan. Avoid adding calcium supplements or other nutrient products unless a veterinarian prescribes them; the concern during large-breed growth is excess as well as deficiency.

Puppy-label checklist
- The adequacy statement says growth or all life stages.
- If a large adult size is expected, the statement covers growth of large-sized dogs.
- Feeding directions provide an amount for the puppy’s current weight and age.
- The package provides calorie information so your veterinarian can evaluate total intake.
- The puppy is staying lean and growing steadily rather than gaining excessive fat.
When an American Bulldog should eat adult food
Adult maintenance is the default for a mature, healthy dog
Once growth is complete, a healthy American Bulldog generally needs a food whose adequacy statement is for adult maintenance or all life stages. Adult-maintenance food is designed for the nutrient needs of mature dogs rather than the higher growth requirements of puppies.
There is no single switch date
The sources do not establish a universal age at which every American Bulldog should change diets. Maturity depends on the individual dog’s expected size, growth pattern, body condition, activity, and health. Have your veterinarian assess whether growth is complete before changing from a growth formula, especially if the dog is still developing physically or has a history of orthopedic concerns.
Portions matter as much as the formula
AAFCO describes feeding directions as guidelines that may need revision for activity and condition. A sedentary adult may need less than the package’s starting amount, while a highly active dog may need more. Weigh food accurately, include treats and toppers in the daily total, and adjust gradually when body condition trends up or down. A food cannot compensate for consistently excessive calories.

“Senior” is a marketing category, not an AAFCO life-stage requirement
AAHA states that AAFCO has no specific nutrient requirements for mature, senior, or geriatric pets. Therefore, an older dog that is healthy and maintaining an appropriate body condition can continue a complete adult-maintenance food. There is no automatic requirement to buy a product labeled senior.

When an older dog may need a different diet
Age-related medical problems can change the appropriate diet. Kidney disease, diabetes, obesity, dental pain, digestive disease, reduced mobility, or another diagnosis may require a veterinarian-selected formula or feeding plan. The decision should follow the dog’s examination and laboratory findings, not age alone. FDA’s overview of the AAHA nutritional assessment guidelines emphasizes evaluating the pet, diet, and feeding management together.
Monitor the individual dog
For an older American Bulldog doing well on adult-maintenance food, continue checking weight, muscle, appetite, stool quality, mobility, and dental comfort. A new symptom or persistent change is a reason for a veterinary assessment, not an automatic reason to make an unsupervised “senior” switch.
How to compare two foods on the shelf
Use this sequence when deciding between products. It prevents attractive front-of-bag claims from replacing the information that determines whether the food fits your dog.
| Label question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Nutritional adequacy statement | Growth, adult maintenance, or all life stages | Confirms the intended life stage under AAFCO profiles. |
| Large-size growth statement | For a puppy expected to be large, wording that supports growth of large-sized dogs where applicable | Large and giant dogs can have a longer skeletal-growth period and require careful calcium and calorie management. |
| Feeding directions | Amount based on current weight, age, and activity; calorie information if listed | Package amounts are starting guidelines, not a personalized prescription. |
| Individual fit | Body condition, activity, health history, and veterinary advice | The same formula and portion will not suit every American Bulldog. |
AAFCO’s selecting-the-right-food guidance explains why directions may need adjustment. FDA also summarizes the broader assessment factors in its nutrition guidance.

A practical feeding process
1. Identify the dog’s current stage
Record age, weight, growth status, activity, body condition, and diagnosed health problems. A puppy still growing should be evaluated as a growth case even if it is approaching adulthood. A mature dog with a medical condition may need a therapeutic plan rather than a standard maintenance formula.
2. Estimate expected adult size for a puppy
Use the parents’ size, the puppy’s growth pattern, and your veterinarian’s assessment. Do not assign a large-size category from breed name alone. If large adult size is expected, limit choices to products whose adequacy statement covers large-sized growth.
3. Read the complete label
Find the adequacy statement, feeding table, calorie information, and any large-size wording. Keep a photograph of the label when you ask your veterinarian for advice; formulations and package instructions can change.

4. Measure the starting portion
Use a gram scale when possible instead of estimating by eye. Divide the daily amount into meals appropriate for the dog, and count treats, chews, table food, and supplements in the overall feeding plan.

5. Recheck body condition
Look for a stable, lean shape rather than chasing a number on the feeding chart. If ribs become difficult to feel, the waist disappears, or weight rises steadily, reduce calories with veterinary guidance. If the dog loses weight, appears unusually hungry, or fails to grow as expected, investigate rather than simply adding food.
6. Change food gradually
When a change is indicated, transition over several days by mixing increasing amounts of the new food with decreasing amounts of the old. Slow the transition if stools loosen or appetite falls. Vomiting, persistent diarrhea, marked lethargy, or refusal to eat warrants veterinary advice.
Example of how to interpret a product label
A June 2024 manufacturer label for Purina Pro Plan Puppy Large Breed Beef & Rice Formula states that the product is complete and balanced for all life stages, including growth of large-sized dogs weighing 70 pounds or more as adults. That statement illustrates the kind of size-specific wording to look for; it is not a universal recommendation for American Bulldogs, a guarantee of current retail availability, or a substitute for checking the package you purchase. Confirm your puppy’s expected adult size, the current label, calorie intake, and veterinary needs before selecting any example product. The dated label is available at the manufacturer’s product-label PDF.
