A photograph shared by designer Guo Qingshan on Xiaohongshu (RedNote) around Valentine’s Day 2025 made the existing viewpoint a social-media curiosity, prompting visitors—some with their dogs—to come see the profile. It is a playful resemblance, not the name of a developed tourist attraction.
Where is Puppy Mountain?
The profile is in Zigui County, in Yichang, Hubei Province, alongside the Yangtze River. It is visible from an observation point on the opposite bank in the area known as Ox Liver and Horse Lung Gorge. The nickname refers to the outline people see in the mountain; it is not an official geological or scenic-site name.
The view was not new when it went viral. An Associated Press caption shows Yichang resident Shi Tong at the viewpoint in 2021. After seeing Guo’s later photo online, Shi recalled that he had visited the same place and thought it looked like a dog then, too.
How did the photo go viral?
Guo noticed the shape after a hike
Shanghai-based designer Guo Qingshan was visiting his hometown of Yichang in late January 2025 when he went hiking. Reviewing the photographs afterward, he noticed a profile that looked like a dog’s head beside the river. He posted the image on Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote, around Valentine’s Day and called it “Puppy Mountain.”

“It was so magical and cute. I was so excited and happy when I discovered it,” Guo told the Associated Press. He imagined the puppy’s posture as if it were drinking water or watching fish, and said it looked as though it were quietly protecting the Yangtze.
Social-media attention brought people to the viewpoint
The photo spread widely, and visitors began traveling to see the profile. Some brought dogs for pictures; the Associated Press reported on visitor Yang Yang, who drove there with friends and her two-year-old grey poodle. Social posts also encouraged people to compare their own dogs with the mountain.

Reported engagement figures vary slightly. The Associated Press said Guo’s RedNote post had 120,000 likes within ten days, while China Daily reported 123,000. Both outlets described millions of views for Puppy Mountain discussions on Weibo. These figures document online attention, not the number of people who visited: the cited reports do not establish a reliable visitor total or economic impact.
Why does the mountain look like a puppy?
Seeing a dog in the outline is an example of pareidolia: the human tendency to perceive familiar forms, such as faces, in inanimate objects. The resemblance is a viewer’s interpretation of the profile, and people may not all see the same features.

The underlying landform has a geological explanation separate from its nickname. China Daily quoted geological tourism expert Li Zhongdong, who attributed the formation to karst processes. Li suggested that features read as eyes and parts of the face may correspond to a karst-cave entrance; that a pale area between the apparent forehead and nose might be a cliff formed by collapse; and that vegetation largely creates the appearance of ears. These are Li’s interpretations of the visible profile, not proof that the mountain has literal facial features.

Early-2025 reporting described the area as remote and steep and said it had not been developed as an official scenic site. China Daily reported that visitors were advised to view the formation from the observation platform on the opposite bank. That is a safety caveat, not confirmation of a managed attraction or a current access arrangement.
The reports do not establish present-day routes, opening hours, transport, facilities, or whether access conditions have changed. Check current local information before planning a visit, and do not assume that the mountain itself has a safe or authorized approach.
