They are valued for foraging, strong mothering and pork or bacon production; their slower maturity and energetic rooting are important trade-offs to plan for.
Are Tamworth pigs right for your farm?
Tamworths are ginger or red-gold pigs with a long snout and erect ears. The British Pig Association describes the breed as suitable for settings from rough pasture to meadowland and particularly resistant to sunburn among native breeds. Oklahoma State University also characterizes Tamworths as rugged, thrifty and very active, with a historical association with lean-type hog and bacon production.
They may suit keepers who have space for outdoor activity and can manage the effects of rooting. The Rare Breeds Survival Trust notes that grazing and rooting can help with conservation grazing and scrub management, but uncontrolled rooting can damage delicate pasture. Rotating paddocks, monitoring ground condition and repairing disturbed areas are sensible management responses; the breed profiles do not establish a specific rotation plan or stocking rate.
Hardiness is not the same as low-input care. The British Pig Association’s buyer guide describes Tamworths as lively and active and explicitly advises adequate pen fencing. The sources do not specify a fence design or energizer power, so choose containment with experienced local guidance and the conditions of your site in mind.

What to expect from growth and production
Tamworths are relatively slow-maturing compared with the expectation some keepers may have for modern production pigs. The Rare Breeds Survival Trust describes them as versatile for pork or bacon, while the British Pig Association also highlights their slower maturity and maternal qualities. Consider whether your timeline, market and processing arrangements fit a slower-growing animal before buying.
For scale, the British Pig Association buyer guide gives about 80 kg live slaughter weight as a general rule of thumb, associated with a 50–60 kg carcass deadweight. These are not guaranteed targets: age, body condition, production system, market preferences and processor specifications can all affect the appropriate endpoint. Discuss the target with your processor before deciding how long to keep pigs.

How to choose Tamworth breeding stock
Start with an established, recognized breeder and ask for pedigree documentation if you are buying animals as registered Tamworths. The British Pig Association says pigs must be pedigree registered to be sold by the Tamworth name. For UK buyers, the government’s recognized-breed-society list names the British Pig Association for the Tamworth breeding programme and specifies its territory as the United Kingdom; that guidance should not be assumed to govern registration elsewhere.
When assessing an animal, the British Pig Association buyer checklist recommends looking for pigs that are inquisitive, active and quick to come forward. Be cautious about lethargic or obviously undersized animals. Check leg strength and placement, feet and stance, a long straight back and sound body condition. For a breeding female, the guide says at least 12 sound, evenly spaced, well-placed teats are desirable.

Ask the breeder about the individual pig’s age, health history, diet, temperament, pedigree and previous management. If you plan to breed, ask about the sow’s farrowing history where available; breed descriptions cannot guarantee an individual animal’s fertility, litter size or ease of farrowing.
Housing, fencing and daily management
Many keepers house Tamworths outdoors year-round, according to the British Pig Association, but severe weather may require extra assistance. Provide suitable shelter, dry bedding and regular observation, and seek veterinary advice when health or welfare concerns arise. Outdoor suitability does not remove the need to adapt care to local weather and site conditions.

The same guide describes sows farrowing in outdoor arks and being protective mothers. Treat this as breed context, not a substitute for a safe farrowing setup and attentive supervision. The guide notes that litters are often smaller today than historical expectations and that older sows may have more difficult farrowings; neither litter size nor uncomplicated births should be assumed.
Because Tamworths are active and root, inspect fencing and pasture regularly. Keep an eye on where rooting is concentrated, particularly on delicate ground, and adjust access or paddock use if damage is developing. The available breed guidance does not prescribe a particular fence layout, shelter specification or stocking density; seek advice suited to your land and local requirements.

What do Tamworth pigs eat?
Feed should be matched to the pigs’ age, condition and production purpose rather than copied from a generic breed ration. The British Pig Association says Tamworths are as sensitive to feeding as other pigs and warns that overfeeding can make them run to fat. It recommends that new keepers ask their supplier for advice on diet and quantity.
No universal ration, growth rate or feed-conversion figure is established by the breed sources cited here. Ask the breeder for the current diet and how to make any transition, then consult a veterinarian or qualified local livestock adviser about a feeding plan appropriate to your animals and system. Do not infer a ration from the slaughter-weight rule of thumb.
Conservation status and finding breeders
The Rare Breeds Survival Trust classifies the Tamworth as a priority breed and reports 225 breeding females recorded in 2024. That is a dated conservation figure, not a live count for 2026, and availability of registered stock may change. Use recognized breed organizations and established breeders to locate animals, then confirm current registration and availability directly.
Local requirements to check before buying
Breed descriptions do not establish the legal or veterinary requirements for keeping pigs where you live. Before bringing animals home, contact your local animal-health authority or agricultural extension service, a veterinarian familiar with pigs, and—if raising for meat—your intended processor. Confirm applicable registration and movement rules, health planning, feed guidance, slaughter requirements and any local land-use restrictions.
