An underwater camera recorded a critically endangered angelshark (Squatina squatina) in Cardigan Bay, Wales, in summer 2025. The Wildlife Trusts’ 2025 marine review calls it the first camera sighting there in four years. It is an encouraging record of the species’ presence—not evidence of a population comeback. The available reports also do not establish that angelsharks were once thought extinct.
What was recorded in Cardigan Bay?
Footage from an underwater camera in Cardigan Bay showed an angelshark, a species conservation organizations describe as critically endangered and among the world’s rarest sharks. The Wildlife Trusts’ 2025 marine review describes the record as the first camera sighting in four years. A July 31, 2025 report says the footage was captured in summer 2025 and calls it the first confirmed sighting since 2021.

These dates describe a gap between confirmed records, not proof that no angelsharks were present in Welsh waters during the intervening years. A camera sighting confirms that an animal was recorded at a particular place and time; it does not count the local population or show how that population is changing.
Why this shark is difficult to spot
The angelshark is adapted to life on the seabed. WWF-UK describes it as lying flat, with wing-like fins and sandy colouring that help it blend into the seafloor. It ambushes passing fish rather than constantly swimming in search of prey. Its camouflage and seabed habits help explain why a camera record can be notable without indicating that the animal was absent before it was filmed.

WWF-UK identifies the angelshark as one of the world’s rarest sharks and critically endangered. Those conservation descriptions provide important context for the sighting, but neither supplies a population estimate for Cardigan Bay.
Does the record mean angelsharks are making a comeback?
Not by itself. A comeback or recovery is a claim about a trend, which would require comparable evidence over time, such as repeated surveys or population data. The reports establish a camera record after a four-year interval in confirmed sightings; they do not establish an increase in numbers, a growing range, or a recovered population. No verified population count or trend statistic is provided in the cited accounts.

The Wildlife Trusts’ review reports that experts think angelsharks give birth in Welsh waters. This is an attributed view, not confirmation of a specific nursery site. The Cardigan Bay footage is evidence of an individual’s presence, but it does not on its own show where the animal was born, whether it was breeding, or how many angelsharks use the area.
