Two male mountain gorilla twins born in Virunga National Park on 3 January 2026 have reached six months of age—a first for mountain-gorilla twins in the park, according to Virunga’s latest update. It is an encouraging milestone for the infants and their mother, Mafuko, but it does not establish a wider population recovery or guarantee the twins’ survival to adulthood.
What happened in Virunga?
Community trackers monitoring gorilla health recorded the twins in the Bageni family on 3 January 2026. Follow-up observation identified adult female Mafuko as their mother and both infants as male; they appeared healthy when first observed. The birth brought the Bageni family to 59 members, making it the park’s largest family, Virunga National Park said in its January 2026 announcement.
How are the twins doing?
Virunga’s latest relevant update, published when the twins reached six months, called the milestone a first for mountain-gorilla twins in the park. The update also said they remained in a critical developmental stage. It is a dated report of their progress, not confirmation of their status after that point or a guarantee of what happens next. The first two months
At two months, Virunga reported that Mafuko and the infants appeared healthy. The twins were beginning small movements while still attached to their mother, and were not yet moving independently on the ground. Their increasing weight added physical demands to Mafuko’s movements, the park said in its two-month update.

Why twin births require extra attention
Virunga describes mountain-gorilla twin births as rare and especially challenging in the early months, when infants depend entirely on their mother for care and transport. “Twin births among mountain gorillas are rare and present additional challenges, particularly during the early months when infants are entirely dependent on their mother for care and transport,” the park said in its January announcement.
Because both infants rely on Mafuko, their needs add to the physical demands of her movements. Virunga said it deployed additional monitoring and protection measures to observe the family and support the twins’ health and survival during this vulnerable period.

What this milestone means—and what it does not
Reaching six months is significant in Virunga’s record of mountain-gorilla twins. It is evidence of progress by these particular infants, not a population census, a survival-rate estimate or proof that the species as a whole is recovering. The park’s updates do not establish a global twin-birth frequency or a global population figure attributable to this event.
The birth is reason for cautious hope: the infants appeared healthy when first observed, were reported healthy at two months and later reached the park’s six-month milestone. Their development remains ongoing, and this single event cannot show that any conservation measure caused the birth or determine the twins’ eventual survival.
