Book a routine veterinary examination at least once a year, even if your pet seems healthy. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends annual exams for pets, with more frequent visits when age, species, breed, health, or environment calls for them. A checkup gives your veterinary team a chance to assess your pet, notice changes, and tailor preventive care; it is not a guarantee that illness will be prevented or caught early.

Why take a healthy-looking pet to the vet?

Pets can hide pain or illness, and some conditions develop gradually. A hands-on examination helps establish a baseline for your individual pet, so the veterinary team can compare later findings and discuss changes that may not be obvious at home. Screening may also provide information that appearance alone cannot.

AAHA’s 2026 checkup guidance recommends routine care at least annually. That is a starting point, not a promise that one schedule suits every animal. Your veterinarian can recommend an interval based on your pet’s needs.

What happens during a routine visit?

A wellness appointment is more than a vaccination visit. The veterinary team can review your pet’s history and conduct a physical examination, then discuss care suited to the animal’s findings and circumstances. The AAHA/AVMA canine preventive-care framework includes history-taking and a comprehensive exam, with attention to dental health, pain, body condition, and muscle condition.

  • Prevention: Discuss whether vaccines and parasite prevention are appropriate for your pet’s health, lifestyle, and location.
  • Screening: Depending on the pet, the veterinarian may consider tests such as bloodwork, urinalysis, fecal testing, heartworm screening, or feline viral testing.

These are areas to discuss, not a standard package of tests or treatments for every pet. The AAHA checkup article describes common exam and screening areas; your veterinarian should determine what is suitable and when to repeat it.

How often should your pet go?

AAHA recommends at least one routine examination each year. The right schedule depends on factors including age, species, breed, health, and environment. Puppies, adult animals, and seniors have different care needs; senior pets and animals with chronic conditions may need more frequent appointments or monitoring. Ask your veterinarian to set an interval for your pet rather than assuming an annual visit is enough.

AAHA’s overview of preventive-care guidelines cites its estimate that one in two pets is overweight or obese, and that 70%–80% of dogs and cats show signs of dental disease by age three. These figures are estimates reported in AAHA’s 2019 overview, not a prediction about any particular pet; ask your veterinary team to assess your animal directly.

Routine care is not a substitute for urgent care

Do not wait for a scheduled checkup if your pet develops a concerning or rapidly worsening problem. Call your veterinary clinic for advice about what to do and how soon your pet should be seen. Routine examinations support ongoing assessment and preventive planning, but they cannot ensure that a pet will stay well or avoid an emergency.
