Two fishermen off Rockingham were reportedly circled by a great white shark for several minutes before it swam away, according to a PerthNow report published on 12 October 2025. The report described the shark as four metres long, but that size—and the species—was not independently confirmed in the sources reviewed.
What happened off Rockingham?
PerthNow reported that two fishermen encountered a shark that circled their boat for several minutes and then moved on. The report says the encounter happened early on Sunday, 12 October 2025. It does not give an exact clock time.
The report describes the animal as a great white, but the reviewed sources do not provide independent confirmation of its species. No direct witness quotation about this encounter is included in the report.
Was the shark really four metres long?
PerthNow reported that the shark was four metres long. That figure is an estimate in the news report, not a verified measurement: the reviewed sources do not provide an official measurement or independent confirmation of the animal’s size.

Where did the sighting happen?
The report places the encounter off the Rockingham coast, but does not identify a particular beach, reef, distance offshore or coordinates. It says only that it happened early Sunday morning.
Was Rockingham under the warning mentioned in the report?
No. The warning mentioned by PerthNow concerned waters between Meelup and Bunker Bay, where the report said there had been increased white shark detections over the preceding three days. That is a separate area from Rockingham; the article does not say the warning applied to Rockingham or resulted from the fishermen’s encounter.

How to report a shark sighting in Western Australia
The Western Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) says to report sightings to Water Police on 9442 8600. DPIRD says the number is staffed 24/7 and that reports can trigger a response if needed, including a beach closure by lifeguards or the relevant land manager.
SharkSmart advises people to check current reported sightings and tagged detections, follow closures issued by relevant authorities, and report sightings as soon as possible. Useful details include:

- The species or distinguishing features, if known.
- An estimated size.
