Dry kibble is far more calorie-dense by weight; wet loaf supplies substantially more moisture. The practical choice depends on your dog’s age, body condition, appetite, eating routine, and your veterinarian’s advice.
Before comparing bowls, make sure you are looking at the correct life-stage formula. The regular adult dry food is intended for purebred Labradors aged 15 months and older. A separate Adult 5+ dry food is intended for Labradors aged 5 years and older and has different calorie figures and feeding guidance. The wet product is named Labrador Retriever Adult loaf in sauce.

Royal Canin Labrador formulas at a glance
The figures below come from the cited Royal Canin product pages. Moisture values are label maximums, and calorie figures are metabolizable energy (ME) values as fed. Regional labels can change, so use the package sold in your country when calculating a daily ration.
| Product | Life-stage wording | Format | Maximum moisture | Listed energy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Labrador Retriever Adult | Purebred Labradors, 15 months and older | Dry donut-shaped kibble | 10.5% | 3,482 kcal ME/kg; 306 kcal ME/cup |
| Labrador Retriever Adult loaf in sauce | Adult maintenance | Wet loaf in sauce | 81% | 776 kcal ME/kg; 299 kcal ME/can on the Canadian English page |
| Labrador Retriever Adult 5+ | Maturing and senior Labradors, 5 years and older | Dry kibble | Not stated in the cited product information | 3,382 kcal ME/kg; 277 kcal ME/cup |
The 299-kcal-per-can figure is also shown on Royal Canin’s US Spanish-language wet-food page. Because the detailed moisture and feeding information cited here is from Canada, check your local can for the current guaranteed analysis, can size, and directions.

First, confirm your Labrador’s age and formula
Regular Adult dry food
Royal Canin identifies its Labrador Retriever Adult dry food for purebred Labradors 15 months and older. Its page describes a calorie and fat level intended to help maintain healthy weight, a donut-shaped kibble, and ingredients including EPA, DHA, and glucosamine for joint support. Those are manufacturer descriptions; the page does not establish that the food produces a particular clinical result in every dog.
Adult 5+ dry food
The Adult 5+ product is not simply the regular adult food with a new label. It targets Labradors aged 5 years and older, lists 3,382 kcal ME/kg or 277 kcal ME/cup, and has its own feeding guide. Do not use the regular Adult table, the wet table, or the Adult 5+ table interchangeably. If your dog is around the transition age, ask your veterinarian which life-stage food and calorie target fit his body condition.
Adult wet loaf in sauce
The wet product is labeled Labrador Retriever Adult loaf in sauce and is described as complete and balanced for maintenance. The Canadian page gives weight- and activity-based daily can recommendations. Treat those recommendations as a starting point, not as a prescription for a dog with a medical condition, unusual activity level, or weight problem.
Moisture: the clearest physical difference
The dry food lists a maximum moisture level of 10.5%, while the wet food lists 81% maximum moisture. These are label maxima, not a promise that every serving contains exactly those percentages. In practical terms, wet loaf carries much more water into the bowl, whereas dry kibble is concentrated and requires your dog to obtain most additional water by drinking.

Higher moisture can be useful when a dog is reluctant to drink or prefers a softer texture, but the product pages do not establish a medical hydration benefit for an individual Labrador. A dog with kidney, urinary, heart, gastrointestinal, or other health concerns needs a veterinarian’s plan rather than a format choice based on moisture alone. Fresh drinking water should always be available, including when you feed wet food.
Calories and portions are not interchangeable
A cup of kibble and a can of wet food are different-sized portions. The adult dry page lists 306 kcal ME per cup and 3,482 kcal ME per kilogram. The cited wet page lists 299 kcal ME per can and 776 kcal ME per kilogram. Because wet food contains so much water, its energy density by weight is much lower.
| Measure | Adult dry | Adult wet | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 g | About 348 kcal, derived from 3,482 kcal/kg | About 78 kcal, derived from 776 kcal/kg | The wet food weighs more for the same calories |
| One stated household portion | 306 kcal per cup | 299 kcal per can | These are similar calorie amounts, but not equivalent volumes or weights |
Royal Canin says grams are the most accurate way to measure the dry food. Its exact wording is: “This is only a guide. Grams are the most accurate form of measurement; cups are given to the closest proximity.” Use a kitchen scale when possible, particularly for a Labrador that gains weight easily or receives treats.

Which format may fit your household?
Reasons to choose dry food
- It is calorie-dense, so a complete daily ration weighs less and is easier to store.
- Weighing kibble in grams gives you a repeatable portioning method.
- Dry pieces are convenient for measured meals, food puzzles, or training, provided those calories are included in the day’s total.
- The adult dry page specifically permits mixing or complementing the kibble with the matching Royal Canin Labrador wet food.
These are practical advantages, not proof that dry food produces better health outcomes. The donut shape and the listed nutrients are product features described by Royal Canin, not independent evidence that every Labrador will have improved teeth, joints, or weight control.

Reasons to choose wet food
- Its 81% maximum moisture makes the meal much wetter than kibble.
- Loaf in sauce offers a different texture for dogs that dislike hard pieces or have difficulty chewing, subject to veterinary advice.
- Because it contains fewer calories per gram, a calorie-matched wet meal is physically larger than a dry meal.
- The wet page provides can amounts based on body weight and activity, which can be useful when you follow the label consistently.
Wet food is not automatically more nutritious, more hydrating in a medical sense, or better accepted by every dog. Individual preference varies, and an opened can requires careful handling according to the package directions.
Reasons to combine them
Royal Canin explicitly says the adult dry food can be mixed with or complemented by the matching Labrador Retriever wet food. Mixed feeding can provide a different texture while keeping both products in the routine. It also creates the main risk of combination feeding: adding a full dry ration and a full wet ration can unintentionally add too many calories.
How to set a daily feeding plan
- Identify the exact product and life stage. Check whether the bag says Adult or Adult 5+, and confirm the wet can is Labrador Retriever Adult loaf in sauce. Record the package’s local calorie statement.
- Weigh your dog and assess body condition. Use the current body weight and your veterinarian’s assessment, not an idealized weight for the breed. A growing, highly active, neutered, or sedentary dog may need a different starting amount.
- Read the product-specific table. Use the dry table for dry food and the wet table for wet food. The dry page says amounts vary with activity and environment and recommends dividing food into two to four equal portions per day. The wet page supplies its own weight- and activity-based can guidance.
- Measure accurately. Weigh dry food in grams. Count the actual can size for wet food; do not assume every can has the same net weight or calories.
- Include extras. Treats, chews, toppers, and food used in training contribute calories. Reduce the meal only when you can identify the calories being replaced.
- Keep water available. Provide fresh drinking water at all times, even if most of the ration is wet.
- Recheck the dog rather than the bowl. Monitor body condition, appetite, stool quality, and weight over time. Ask your veterinarian to adjust the plan if weight trends, digestive signs, or a diagnosed condition change.
How to calculate mixed feeding without overfeeding
Think in calories, not in equal cups and cans. The cited figures provide a simple illustration: one cup of adult dry food is listed at 306 kcal, and one can of the cited wet food at 299 kcal. A half-cup plus half a can would supply roughly 302.5 kcal from the stated values. That example is arithmetic, not a recommendation for your dog’s daily intake.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a real mixed ration, first establish the total calories your veterinarian or the product guides support. Then assign a percentage to each format. For example, if half of the day’s calories are allocated to dry food, divide that calorie allowance by 306 to estimate cups, or by the dry food’s kcal-per-gram value to weigh it. Divide the wet-food allowance by 299 to estimate cans. Use the exact local label if its can size or calorie declaration differs.

Do not split food by volume. A “half bowl of kibble plus half bowl of loaf” can be dramatically different from a 50/50 calorie split because the foods have different densities and household measures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Weight management and veterinary decisions
Labradors commonly vary widely in activity, body size, metabolism, and appetite. Royal Canin’s tables are general guides; the dry page specifically notes that amounts may vary with activity and environment. A dog that is gaining weight on the printed amount may need a measured reduction, more appropriate treats, or a veterinary evaluation. A dog losing weight, vomiting, having persistent diarrhea, drinking excessively, or refusing food needs professional advice rather than a switch based only on wet-versus-dry preference.
Ask your veterinarian before changing food for diabetes, pancreatitis, kidney or liver disease, urinary problems, food allergy, orthopedic disease, dental pain, pregnancy, or recovery from illness. Complete-and-balanced maintenance wording does not mean either product is appropriate for every diagnosis.
Changing from one format to another
Use the package directions and your veterinarian’s advice when changing foods. A practical transition keeps the old and new foods measured separately, introduces the new format gradually, and watches appetite and stools before increasing its share. If digestive upset is marked or persistent, stop escalating the change and contact a veterinarian. When moving between regular Adult and Adult 5+, follow the destination product’s life-stage table rather than carrying over the old cup amount.

Cost and availability: how to make a fair comparison
No current, comparable retail prices or stock information are established here, and prices vary by country, package size, retailer, and promotion. If you are comparing value, use the packages available to you on the same date and calculate cost per calorie:
- For dry food, multiply the bag’s kilograms by the package’s kcal/kg figure to estimate total calories in the bag.
- For wet food, multiply the number of cans by the kcal-per-can figure printed on that package.
- Divide the purchase price by total calories, then compare the cost of feeding the same number of calories.
Do not compare a bag price with a single-can price or assume that a larger package has the same formula. Confirm the exact product name, life stage, net weight, calorie statement, and local feeding directions before buying.
Troubleshooting common feeding problems
| What you notice | First check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Weight gain | Portions measured by cups, extra treats, or a full dry ration plus a full wet ration | Recalculate total calories, weigh food, and ask your veterinarian for a target |
| Weight loss | Whether the dog is eating the stated amount and whether the correct life-stage formula is being used | Arrange a veterinary assessment rather than simply adding unrestricted food |
| Loose stools after a switch | How quickly the new food was introduced and whether treats also changed | Pause the transition and seek veterinary advice if signs persist or are severe |
| Dog refuses one format | Texture, freshness, serving temperature, and the possibility of illness or dental pain | Do not force a food change; consult your veterinarian if refusal continues |
| Confusion over amounts | Whether the table belongs to Adult, Adult 5+, dry, or wet food | Return to the exact package table and measure in grams or actual cans |
Bottom-line decision
Choose the regular Adult dry formula for a purebred Labrador aged 15 months or older when measured, calorie-dense kibble fits your routine. Choose the matching Adult loaf in sauce when a wetter, lower-calorie-by-weight meal suits your dog and household. Consider a calorie-controlled combination when you want both textures. For Labradors aged 5 and older, evaluate the separate Adult 5+ product instead of assuming the regular Adult guide still applies. In every case, use the local package label, measure the total daily calories, provide water, and let your veterinarian resolve health-specific decisions.
