The veterinary sources reviewed do not establish that it does, and they do not provide a safety profile for applying salt to a cat’s coat. Cornell warns that home remedies found online are usually ineffective against parasites and some may be harmful. Don’t sprinkle salt on your cat or use it instead of a cat-labeled flea treatment.
What the evidence says about salt
No reviewed veterinary source endorses household salt as a flea treatment for cats, and the available sources do not establish that it kills fleas when applied to a cat or its coat. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s 2025 parasite-prevention guidance says, “While it may be tempting to use different home remedies found online, they are usually ineffective in protecting your pet from parasites, and some might actually be harmful.” This is general guidance about home remedies, not a salt-specific test; it does not prove that salt’s effectiveness has been experimentally disproven.

VCA warns that giving a cat salt by mouth to induce vomiting can cause poisoning or significant injury. That warning concerns ingestion and does not establish that every topical exposure has the same risk. But cats groom themselves, and salt has no established flea-control benefit in the reviewed sources, so applying it to the coat is not advisable. If your cat has licked or swallowed salt, or you have already applied it, contact a veterinarian for advice based on the amount and circumstances.

Choose a treatment labeled for cats
Use a flea product whose label specifically includes cats, and follow its directions. Products differ in what they target and how they are applied; a veterinarian can help choose one suited to your cat’s age, health, and circumstances. Some dog flea products can poison cats. In particular, the American Veterinary Medical Association warns that some dog products containing permethrin are toxic to cats. Do not use a dog product on a cat unless its label explicitly says it is suitable for cats.

Check the coat with a flea comb
A fine-toothed flea comb can help you look for visible fleas or flea dirt and remove some of what you find. Cornell describes flea combing as a way to check for signs of fleas. Combing is an inspection and removal aid, not a complete plan for controlling an infestation.
Control fleas in the home, too
Flea control means addressing fleas on the animal and in the places it spends time. Cornell recommends routinely treating pets with appropriate flea products, washing pet bedding, and vacuuming frequently. An infestation can take a few months to bring under control, so keep up with the plan rather than relying on a one-time cleanup.

The scale of the problem can grow quickly: under ideal conditions, one mating female flea lays at least 20 eggs a day, according to William Miller Jr., VMD, a Cornell professor of dermatology. That figure describes flea reproduction; it is not evidence about salt.
