The Vangunu giant rat was formally described in 2017. First published camera-trap images followed in 2023, but they do not provide a population census or prove coconut cracking.

Scientists published the first camera-trap images of the Vangunu giant rat, Uromys vika, in a 2023 study. Researchers recorded 95 images and suggested they showed four animals—but that is not a population count. The species was already known: it had been formally described in 2017 from a physical specimen found on Vangunu Island in the Solomon Islands.

What is the Vangunu giant rat?

Uromys vika is a large rodent endemic to Vangunu Island in the Solomon Islands. Its common name is the Vangunu giant rat. Tyrone H. Lavery and Hikuna Judge formally described it as a new species in a paper published in the Journal of Mammalogy on September 27, 2017. The authors noted it was the first new rodent species described from the Solomon Islands in more than 80 years. Read the 2017 species description.

What did the first photos show?

A 2023 study reported 95 camera-trap images from forest in the Zaira Community Resource Management Area on Vangunu. The researchers interpreted the images as probably representing four individual rats at two survey sites. That is the authors’ interpretation of the photographs, not a definitive population estimate for the island. Read the 2023 camera-trap study.

Why were the photos significant?

The 2017 description was based on a single physical specimen discovered in a commercially felled Dillenia salomonensis tree. Camera traps later documented the living species in the forest. Researchers used local community knowledge to help guide where they surveyed, underscoring the importance of that knowledge to finding and studying a rare animal.

Does the rat really crack coconuts?

The coconut-cracking label needs a caveat. A 2017 Field Museum account said the rat had not been observed cracking coconuts, but had been seen chewing circular holes in nuts to reach the meat. So coconut cracking should be treated as reported behavior or local knowledge, not as an action demonstrated in the 2023 camera-trap study. Read the Field Museum account.

Why is the Vangunu giant rat threatened?

The 2017 description identified the rat’s apparently narrow range, low density and rapid commercial logging as conservation concerns. The 2023 study described Zaira’s primary forest as the last suitable habitat then known to its researchers. It warned that if logging consent were granted, logging would lead to the species’ extinction. That was a conditional warning in a 2023 paper; it does not establish the current status of any logging consent or permit.
