Changing how captive lions receive food can change what they do with their day. In two separate zoo studies, group feeding outdoors and feeding whole carcasses on a longer schedule were each associated with shifts in observed behavior. Neither study showed that lions became wild again, and the results do not establish one best feeding plan for every zoo.
Two different feeding changes—not one experiment
The headline describes findings from two studies with different animals, feeding methods, and measures. Zoo Antwerpen changed where and how often five African lions were fed; Monarto Safari Park studied whole carcasses with a small test group. Their results should be read separately rather than combined into a single claim about a universal “wild” response.
| Study | Feeding change | Animals and observation | Reported findings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoo Antwerpen, publication record indexed by PubMed in 2025 | Daily individual meals indoors were replaced by group meals outdoors three times a week. | Five African lions observed over six weeks, with a one-week habituation period between methods; the abstract reports 150 hours of behavioral data. | Behavioral diversity increased significantly and inactivity changed. Social network analysis found no significant change in agonistic or affiliative behavior. |
| Monarto Safari Park, Hryhorenko et al., 2026 | The test group received approximately 200 kg of combined kangaroo and goat carcasses every nine days. | Seven lions were monitored: three adult males in the test group and four control animals. Following a four-week baseline, the test group had an eight-week carcass-feeding phase. Continuous 24-hour video was sampled at five-minute intervals. | Feeding behavior rose on carcass days; lying increased in following days. Pacing was higher in the second experimental month than at baseline and rose toward the end of the nine-day interval, with peaks around typical shifting and feeding times. |
What changed at Zoo Antwerpen?
The Antwerpen intervention was about setting and social context, not whole carcasses: lions moved from individual indoor meals every day to shared outdoor feedings three times weekly. Researchers recorded a significant increase in behavioral diversity and a change in inactivity levels under the modified approach.
That result does not mean the lions became more affiliative or had fewer conflicts. The study’s social network analysis found no significant change in either affiliative or agonistic behavior. The abstract reports a behavioral change, not a demonstrated improvement across all aspects of welfare.

What happened when Monarto lions received carcasses?
At Monarto, carcass feeding created a pattern that varied across the nine-day interval. The test group ate on carcass days, spent more time lying in the days afterward, and showed pacing patterns that rose later in the interval. Pacing was higher in the second experimental month than during baseline, and peaks occurred around usual shifting and feeding times.
The authors described these activity patterns as consistent with naturalistic feeding and post-feeding behavior in the study group. That is a qualified interpretation of observed behavior—not evidence that captivity was reversed, or that every measure of welfare improved.

- [Treat Distribution] Our food dispenser has differently sized spheres at both ends. As dogs push the toy, it moves within a fixed area, allowing dogs to continuously chase and play with it. During movement, food is dispensed from the food holes on both sides of the toy.
- [Adjustable Switch] Each of the two spheres with a food dispensing switch, making it suitable for various sizes and types of pet dry food or snack. The switch can be adjusted according to the different sizes of dog food. It also allows control over the amount of food dispensed, extending or shortening the time it takes for pets to obtain food. It is more conducive to a healthy dog diet.
- [Increase Pet Intelligence] This dog treat puzzle toy combines intellectual training with food rewards. When pets push this toy, it will not only be to get delicious food, but it will also stimulate their intelligence and hunting instinct. This design not only meets the needs of pets but also encourages them to learn and grow in the game.

How the earlier lion studies add context
Whole carcass versus meat pieces
A 2019 study compared four captive lion prides receiving meat pieces four to five times per week with prides receiving a whole carcass once weekly. Its abstract reports reduced aggression between feeding events among the low-frequency, whole-carcass groups. This was a separate comparison, not a result from either Antwerpen or Monarto, and it does not show that the same schedule suits every pride.
A report on one Asiatic lion
A longitudinal report followed one female Asiatic lion at Chester Zoo after her diet changed to whole-calf carcasses followed by fast days. Resting increased 12 months after the change. Because this was one animal and a separate report, it is useful context rather than a general prediction for lions.

What these results mean for captive lion care
- Feeding routine can shape daily behavior. The studies found changes in activity patterns or behavioral diversity after specific feeding changes.
- “More naturalistic” is not one shared measurement. The studies observed different behaviors under different interventions, so their findings cannot be reduced to a single score or direct comparison.
- Small, zoo-specific samples limit generalization. The results describe the lions and conditions studied; they do not establish a standard schedule for all captive lions.
- Diet planning remains a professional responsibility. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute explains that its carnivore diets remain nutritionally complete and that meat comes from reputable USDA-inspected facilities. It notes that carcass feeding can stimulate natural mental and physical behaviors, including social feeding behaviors in lions.
These are managed zoo-care practices, not instructions for private feeding. Carcass sourcing, nutrition, animal health, and group management belong with qualified zoo professionals.
