The result is a first for kangaroos, not a pregnancy or a live joey: the work used eastern grey kangaroo eggs and sperm, and no birth was reported. The researchers hope the technique will eventually help conservation efforts for threatened marsupials.
What did the researchers achieve?
A University of Queensland-led team reported producing kangaroo embryos with ICSI. In this technique, a researcher injects a single sperm directly into a mature egg. It is a specific IVF method, rather than evidence that a kangaroo pregnancy was established.
The research abstract, “28 Successful production of kangaroo ICSI embryos,” by P. D. Palacios and coauthors, appeared in Reproduction, Fertility and Development, volume 37, issue 1; its record is dated 13 December 2024. The university announced the result on 6 February 2025 and said the work was presented at the International Embryo Technology Society’s 2025 annual conference. The research record and the University of Queensland announcement describe the achievement.
How were the embryos made?
The team assessed kangaroo eggs and sperm in the laboratory, then used ICSI to place a sperm directly into a mature egg. ABC News reported that the reproductive material came from kangaroos that had died. The Guardian reported that researchers had produced more than 20 embryos by the time of its 6 February 2025 article. That count does not establish that every embryo developed normally, was transferred, or resulted in a birth.

Was a kangaroo born through IVF?
No live joey or pregnancy was reported. The milestone was embryo production in the laboratory. Creating an embryo is an important step, but it is not the same as demonstrating that an embryo can be reliably transferred, develop through pregnancy, and produce a healthy animal.
Why did the team use eastern grey kangaroos?
Eastern grey kangaroos served as a model species because they are overabundant, according to lead researcher Dr Andres Gambini. The aim was to adapt embryo technologies already used with domestic animals and humans—not to suggest that eastern grey kangaroos are endangered. Gambini described the model approach in the university’s announcement.

Could IVF help conserve threatened marsupials?
Potentially, but that remains a future application. The researchers hope to refine how marsupial eggs and sperm are collected, cultured and preserved, then adapt assisted reproduction for threatened species. The University of Queensland named koalas, Tasmanian devils, northern hairy-nosed wombats and Leadbeater’s possums as possible conservation targets.
Preserving reproductive material could help retain genetic diversity and make it available for future conservation breeding. But this kangaroo result does not show that IVF can already produce an endangered marsupial, that embryos can be reliably frozen and transferred, or that IVF alone can prevent extinction. The Guardian quoted Gambini describing IVF as one tool in a broader conservation effort that also involves population monitoring, breeding management and habitat protection.

When might a marsupial be born through IVF?
In 2025, Gambini told ABC News that a first marsupial IVF birth remained at least a decade away, conditional on sustained funding and collaboration. The university framed a birth within a decade as a hope dependent on collaboration, funding and technical progress—not a firm deadline. These were researcher estimates made in 2025, not a measured result or a current guarantee. ABC News and the university announcement report those qualifications.
