Scientists Dug Turtles from Drying Mud After an Agency Cut Flows

After environmental flows stopped in the Gwydir wetlands, researchers dug 39 turtles from drying mud. By October 2026, 13 adults had been released and more than 250 eggs were incubating.

In March 2026, WaterNSW stopped environmental-water deliveries to the Gwydir wetlands near Moree, New South Wales, after concerns that continuing flows could inundate private property. The Gingham watercourse then lost its surface water, leaving freshwater turtles trapped in drying, thigh-deep mud. University of New England researchers dug animals out by hand and moved 39 turtles to Taronga Western Plains Zoo for veterinary care. By October 9, the NSW Government reported that the turtles had laid more than 250 eggs; 13 adults had passed health checks and been released into healthy Gwydir wetlands. The emergency exposed the limits of relying on turtles’ natural drought survival when a wetland continues drying.

Why were scientists digging turtles out of drying mud?

Researchers were trying to prevent deaths after the Gingham watercourse stopped receiving environmental flows and its waterholes dried. Turtles can shelter in mud during short droughts, but prolonged drying can leave them unable to reach water, overheat, or die before conditions improve.

The Gingham watercourse is part of a wetland system supporting four sites listed under the international Ramsar Convention. That makes the incident more than a local wildlife rescue: it affected habitat recognized as internationally important.

What happened to the Gwydir wetlands turtles?

WaterNSW halted deliveries in March 2026. The Guardian reported that the decision followed concerns about flooding private land, while water remained stored in Copeton Dam. As the Gingham watercourse dried, University of New England researchers found turtles buried in mud deep enough to reach their thighs and excavated them.

A May 6, 2026 report described Copeton Dam as about 62% full, holding more than 830 gigalitres, and said approximately 217 gigalitres of environmental water was available before July. The same report estimated that more than 300 broad-shelled turtles were trapped downstream and that about 40 were pulled free. Those figures described the emergency at the time, not a final population census.

The dispute drew sharp criticism from University of New South Wales river ecologist Professor Richard Kingsford, who called the situation “appalling” and said, “I think it’s appalling because we have a catastrophe unfolding here.” Kamilaroi traditional owner Polly Cutmore told The Guardian, “It’s so disrespectful – they keep doing this stuff without even talking to us when it’s our country.”

Key dates in the emergency

Date What was reported
March 2026 WaterNSW stopped environmental-water deliveries to the Gwydir wetlands after concerns about inundating private property.
April 20, 2026 The Guardian reported turtles being dug from thigh-deep mud and 39 animals in care at Taronga Western Plains Zoo.
May 6, 2026 A contemporaneous report estimated Copeton Dam at about 62% full and more than 300 turtles trapped downstream; these were estimates during the rescue.
October 9, 2026 The NSW Government reported more than 250 eggs incubating and 13 adult turtles released.

How many turtles were rescued, and did they survive?

The NSW Government’s October 9 recovery update is the strongest source for the final rescue figures. It says 39 turtles were rescued, many arrived carrying eggs, and the group subsequently laid more than 250 eggs. The eggs are being incubated at Taronga’s Platypus Rescue HQ in a temperature-controlled facility.

Recovery measure Status reported October 9, 2026 Qualification
Adult turtles rescued 39 Final government recovery figure.
Eggs laid after rescue More than 250 Incubating under temperature control; not yet a hatchling total.
Broad-shelled turtles released 10 Released after health assessments into healthy Gwydir wetlands.
Murray River turtles released 3 Released after health assessments; further releases were expected as conditions allowed.
Adults released in total 13 Ten broad-shelled and three Murray River turtles.

Taronga Wildlife Conservation Officer Dr Phoebe Meagher said the animals received “health assessments, veterinary monitoring and supportive husbandry” before release preparations. The remaining rescued turtles were expected to follow when wetland conditions were suitable. The October update did not say that all eggs had hatched or that every rescued adult had been released.

Can freshwater turtles really survive buried in mud?

Yes, some can survive short periods without surface water, but that adaptation has limits. A 2024 University of New England study at Gingham Waterhole found that one-third of tracked Murray River turtles stayed in mud as the waterhole dried. Four of the five turtles in that group survived 66 days without surface water until water returned; one died.

Those observations show a drought-survival strategy, not immunity to prolonged drying. Government monitoring imagery also recorded Murray River turtles attempting to leave drying mud and showed the same habitat after water returned. A turtle that remains buried may conserve energy, yet it still faces a rising risk of death if water does not come back in time.

Why was environmental water being held in Copeton Dam?

Environmental flows are planned releases from dams or tributaries intended to maintain river and wetland health. In this case, reporting said water was held in Copeton Dam after a landholder raised concerns that flows could inundate private property. That created a conflict between managing flood or liability risks on private land and maintaining water in a Ramsar-linked wetland.

The available figures show why timing mattered: the May report described substantial stored water, while the Gingham watercourse was drying downstream. Having water in a dam does not by itself keep a wetland alive; an authorized release must reach the watercourse before critical waterholes become too dry for wildlife.

What does the rescue mean for the Gwydir wetlands?

The rescue prevented an immediate loss of dozens of adult turtles and created a potential second chance through the 250-plus eggs. It cannot replace functioning wetland hydrology. Adults can be returned only when water quality and habitat are suitable, and eggs still have to hatch and produce juveniles that survive to breeding age.

The event also raises governance questions that extend beyond turtles:

  • Water-governance timing: whether environmental water is delivered before a waterhole reaches lethal drying.
  • Property-liability management: how agencies address inundation concerns while meeting ecological and legal responsibilities.
  • Rescue versus prevention: the cost and limits of excavating and rehabilitating animals compared with maintaining water in the wetland.
  • Life-stage outcomes: adult survival, egg viability, hatchling release and the years required for population recovery.
  • Cultural and ecological values: Ramsar obligations, threatened-species habitat and Kamilaroi connections to country.

For now, the clearest outcome is partial recovery rather than a resolved dispute: 13 adults were back in healthy wetlands by October, while other turtles and more than 250 eggs remained dependent on continued care and suitable conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Ramsar protection mean for a wetland like Gingham?

Ramsar status identifies wetlands of international importance and signals that their ecological character should be maintained. It does not guarantee that water will be released on a particular day, so domestic water-management decisions still determine whether habitat remains wet enough for wildlife.

Why were the rescued eggs moved to an incubator?

The eggs were placed in a temperature-controlled facility at Taronga’s Platypus Rescue HQ. Controlled incubation allows staff to protect them while the adults recover and while managers assess whether the Gwydir wetlands are suitable for future releases.

Were more than 300 turtles definitely trapped?

No. The figure came from a contemporaneous May report based on prior population information and conditions during the emergency. The NSW Government’s later, final rescue figure was 39 turtles, so the two numbers should not be treated as a complete count of the same group.

Which turtle species were involved in the rescue?

Reporting named broad-shelled turtles, Murray River turtles and eastern long-necked turtles in the affected Gwydir system. The government’s release update specifically identified 10 broad-shelled and three Murray River adults among those released.
