The quick difference: Scottish Fold ears bend forward and downward; American Curl ears sweep backward in a variable arc. The more important difference is health: guidance from The International Cat Association (TICA) and Cats Protection links the Scottish Fold ear mutation to degenerative joint disease (osteochondrodysplasia). The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) says no breed-linked health issues had come to light for American Curls on its breed page, while cautioning implicitly through the wording “to date” that this is not a lifetime health guarantee.
Both breeds still need normal preventive veterinary care, humane handling and regular grooming. If you are choosing between them, investigate the Scottish Fold’s inherited joint-risk issue first, then compare ear handling, coat length, activity and the individual cat’s health history.

Scottish Fold vs. American Curl at a glance
| Question | Scottish Fold | American Curl |
|---|---|---|
| What direction do the ears take? | They fold forward and downward. | They curve backward in an arc; the amount of curl varies. |
| What creates the distinctive ear? | The ear-fold mutation affects cartilage and is associated with osteochondrodysplasia, a degenerative joint disorder. | A separate cartilage mutation produces the backward curl. |
| Breed-linked health information in the cited guidance | TICA and Cats Protection connect the mutation with degenerative disease affecting joints and cartilage. | CFA states: “To date, no breed-linked health issues have come to light.” That statement is time-qualified and does not promise that every cat is healthy. |
| Ear handling | Do not repeatedly bend, pull or manipulate the ears or tail to test for disease. TICA says the folded ears are not more prone to infection than those of other breeds. | Never force the ears into an unnatural position. Handle and clean them very gently so the cartilage is not damaged. |
| Coat routine | Shorthaired cats: TICA recommends weekly brushing. Longhaired and shorthaired varieties exist. | CFA describes a relatively easy, low-undercoat coat and recommends brushing or combing two or three times each month. |
| Most important owner priority | Watch for stiffness, reduced mobility or apparent pain and arrange veterinary assessment promptly. | Protect the ear cartilage, use ordinary preventive care and monitor the individual cat rather than assuming “no breed-linked issues” means no possible illness. |
The ear descriptions and care recommendations come from the breed profiles of CFA, TICA’s American Curl page and TICA’s Scottish Fold page. The table separates an organization’s published breed-level statement from the health of a particular cat.
How the ear shapes differ
Scottish Fold: a forward-and-downward fold
A Scottish Fold’s pinnae bend toward the front of the head and downward, giving the breed its rounded, “folded” outline. The visible ear is not simply being held in a temporary pose; the cartilage has developed differently because of the inherited mutation described in TICA’s breed information. That same biological change is why ear shape cannot be treated as a purely cosmetic trait.

American Curl: a backward sweep
An American Curl ear arcs away from the face toward the back of the skull. TICA describes the possible curl as ranging from about 90 to 180 degrees, so two sound Curls can look noticeably different. Kittens’ ears continue developing: TICA and CFA report that the final shape is reached at about 16 weeks. A young kitten’s ear position therefore should not be judged as its permanent adult appearance.
The curl is firm cartilage, but it is not indestructible. TICA specifically warns owners not to break the cartilage or force the ears into unnatural positions (TICA, “American Curl”). CFA likewise advises extreme care when cleaning (CFA, “American Curl”).
Direction is the reliable visual shortcut
If you need a one-second distinction, look at the direction rather than the degree: Scottish Fold ears point forward and down; American Curl ears point back. Degree of curl, ear size and coat length vary within each breed, so those secondary features are less dependable for identification.

The ear mutation is linked to a cartilage and joint disorder
TICA explains that Scottish Folds “have a form of degenerative joint disease caused by the same thing that causes the ear to fold” (TICA, “Scottish Fold”). Cats Protection describes the condition as osteochondrodysplasia: abnormal cartilage formation in cats bred from Scottish Folds (Cats Protection, “Scottish Fold Cats”). The practical implication is important: selecting a cat for a folded ear can also mean selecting for a mutation that affects the skeleton.
The cited guidance identifies the tail, ankles and feet as areas that may be particularly affected. Disease can increase over time, but the available guidance does not establish a single age of onset, a population prevalence, a predictable severity scale or a breed-wide life-expectancy figure. Those numbers should not be guessed or presented as universal.

What to watch for at home
- Stiffness when rising, walking or jumping.
- A change in gait, reluctance to climb or a noticeable reduction in play.
- Apparent pain, guarding a limb or reacting when moving.
- A tail that appears unusually rigid or uncomfortable.
TICA says stiffness or apparent pain when the tail is manipulated warrants prompt veterinary assessment. That is a reason to seek professional care, not an instruction to bend or pull the tail yourself. Do not perform repeated home “tests”; observe normal movement and let a veterinarian examine the cat.
Breeder screening helps with decisions, but does not erase the concern
TICA recommends responsible breeder planning, veterinary screening, genetic testing and attention to weight. These steps can provide information about parents and help a breeder make informed choices, but they should not be described as eliminating the mutation-related risk in a cat with folded ears. Ask for written health records, the parents’ identities and the tests actually performed; do not accept “health tested” as a substitute for details.

Ear infections are not the main breed-specific issue
TICA says Scottish Fold ears are not more susceptible to ear infections than other cats. That does not mean an individual Fold cannot develop an infection, mites, allergy or another ear problem. It means owners should not let the unusual ear shape distract them from the more consequential, mutation-associated joint concern. Seek veterinary advice for odor, discharge, persistent scratching, head shaking or visible inflammation rather than inserting objects or unapproved products into the canal.
What is known about American Curl health
Interpret CFA’s statement precisely
The CFA American Curl profile says, “To date, no breed-linked health issues have come to light” (CFA, “American Curl”). “To date” is essential. It reports what the organization had identified on that page at the time of publication; it is not evidence that every American Curl will remain healthy, that the breed has zero lifetime disease risk or that future findings are impossible.
A Curl still needs vaccinations and parasite control appropriate to its location, dental and weight monitoring, routine examinations and prompt evaluation of any new symptom. General feline illnesses can occur in any breed, and an individual cat’s history, age, environment and genetics matter more than a reassuring breed summary.

Protect the curved cartilage
The ear’s backward arc is not a handle. TICA’s warning is explicit: do not break the cartilage and never force the ears into unnatural positions (TICA). CFA says to keep the ears clean but to use extreme care (CFA). If a veterinarian recommends cleaning, ask which product and method are appropriate for your cat. Do not push cotton swabs, fingers or other objects into the ear canal, and stop if the cat shows pain.

A crossbreed case report is not a breed-wide verdict
A 2020 peer-reviewed case report documented osteochondrodysplasia in a Scottish Fold crossbreed, including a Scottish Fold–American Curl cross (Journal of Veterinary Medical Science case report via PubMed Central). One reported individual demonstrates that the case occurred; it does not establish how common the condition is, prove that the American Curl mutation causes Scottish Fold disease or overturn CFA’s breed-page statement. Use the report as a reason to interpret evidence carefully, not as proof that all American Curls share the Scottish Fold risk.
Care routines for both breeds
Ear care
- Look, don’t force. During a calm interaction, check the outer ear for redness, swelling, odor, discharge, crusting or parasites. Never straighten a Curl’s ear or repeatedly manipulate a Fold’s ear.
- Use only veterinary-directed products. If cleaning is needed, ask a veterinarian which cleaner and frequency fit the cat. Breed profiles do not endorse a particular cleaner, and household products can irritate delicate tissue.
- Keep examinations gentle. Stop if the cat shows pain, and arrange an appointment for persistent scratching, head shaking, odor, discharge or a sudden change in ear position.
- Do not confuse appearance with disease. A folded or curled pinna can look unusual while being normal for the breed; inflammation, discharge and discomfort are the actionable signs.
Scottish Fold coat care
Scottish Folds may be shorthaired or longhaired. TICA recommends weekly brushing for shorthaired Folds and notes light shedding throughout the year with heavier seasonal shedding (TICA). A longhaired Fold may need more frequent, longer sessions to prevent mats; increase frequency when the coat tangles or during heavy shedding rather than following a rigid calendar.
Use a cat-safe brush or comb, work in short sessions and check areas that mat easily, such as behind the ears, under the legs and around the collar. Grooming removes loose hair and lets you notice skin changes, but it does not prevent or treat osteochondrodysplasia.
American Curl coat care
CFA describes the American Curl as relatively easy to groom because of its low undercoat and recommends brushing or combing two or three times monthly (CFA). Individual coats vary, so increase the schedule if the cat develops tangles, sheds heavily or cannot keep itself clean. Long sessions are unnecessary if brief, regular handling keeps the coat free of mats.

Introduce grooming gradually: let the cat sniff the tool, brush one easy area, reward calm behavior and stop before resistance escalates. A general cat brush or comb is sufficient; no special tool is established by the cited breed guidance.
Weight and mobility
Weight matters especially when a cat already has a potential joint disorder. TICA includes attention to weight in Scottish Fold care guidance. Feed a measured, age-appropriate diet, monitor body condition with your veterinarian and keep daily movement comfortable. Do not start a joint supplement or mobility product as a preventive treatment based solely on breed; the cited sources do not establish one as effective.
Routine veterinary care
Arrange regular examinations for either breed and bring forward the appointment when behavior or movement changes. For a Scottish Fold, mention any stiffness, reluctance to jump, altered gait or pain. For an American Curl, mention ear sensitivity, discharge or a change in the curl, while remembering that ordinary illnesses remain possible even without a recognized breed-linked disorder.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing between a Scottish Fold and an American Curl
Choose based on health priorities, not just the silhouette
If your priority is minimizing a known inherited skeletal concern, the Scottish Fold’s mutation-associated disease deserves serious consideration before you commit. The folded ear is inseparable from the mutation described by TICA and Cats Protection. An American Curl avoids that specific Scottish Fold ear-fold issue in the evidence cited here, but CFA’s “no breed-linked health issues” wording is not a promise of perfect health.
Questions to ask a breeder or rescue
- Which breed registry and veterinary records document the cat’s identity and parents?
- For a Scottish Fold, what veterinary screening and genetic testing were performed, and can you see the results rather than a general assurance?
- Has the cat shown stiffness, pain, reluctance to jump or an abnormal tail?
- For an American Curl, how were the ears handled during kittenhood, and has any ear injury or chronic discharge been recorded?
- What is the cat’s current diet, body condition, grooming routine and preventive-care schedule?
- What return or medical-support policy applies if a health problem appears after adoption?
A responsible seller should allow you to review records and meet the cat in a setting where movement, temperament and handling can be observed. A striking ear shape should never replace a veterinary examination and a transparent history.

Match the grooming commitment to the actual coat
Neither breed is inherently a high-maintenance grooming project. The source-supported baseline is weekly brushing for a shorthaired Scottish Fold and brushing or combing two or three times a month for an American Curl. Long hair, matting, shedding and the cat’s tolerance may require more time. Ask to see the adult coat when possible; a kitten’s appearance can change.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling the Scottish Fold ear a harmless cosmetic feature. The same mutation is linked to osteochondrodysplasia and degenerative joint disease.
- Promising that an American Curl is guaranteed healthy. CFA’s statement is qualified by “to date” and applies to breed-linked findings on its page, not every disease in every cat.
- Forcing an American Curl’s ears into a preferred angle. This can damage cartilage.
- Pulling a Scottish Fold’s tail to check for arthritis. Observe movement and have a veterinarian assess pain or stiffness.
- Over-cleaning either breed’s ears. Clean only as directed by a veterinarian and never insert objects into the canal.
- Using a case report as prevalence data. The 2020 Scottish Fold–American Curl crossbreed report documents one case, not a population rate or proof of American Curl-wide risk.
- Assuming a brush treats joint disease. Grooming tools manage loose hair and mats; they do not alter cartilage or prevent osteochondrodysplasia.
When to call the veterinarian
For a Scottish Fold
Book an assessment promptly if the cat becomes stiff, appears painful, changes its gait, stops jumping, plays less, guards a limb or reacts uncomfortably around the tail or feet. Do not wait for dramatic disability, and do not attempt to confirm the diagnosis by bending joints or the tail.
For an American Curl
Arrange a visit for ear redness, swelling, odor, discharge, repeated scratching, head shaking, pain during gentle handling or a sudden change in the ear’s shape. A curled ear is normal; signs of inflammation or discomfort are not. The same appointment can address any general change in appetite, weight, behavior or mobility.

Scottish Fold and American Curl ears point in opposite directions, but the health implications are not equivalent. The Scottish Fold fold is tied in breed and welfare guidance to a cartilage disorder that can cause degenerative joint disease, so prospective owners should weigh that inherited concern and plan vigilant veterinary monitoring. The American Curl’s backward curl requires careful handling, yet CFA reports no breed-linked health issue identified on its page “to date.” Whichever breed you choose, protect the ears, keep the coat groomed according to its length, maintain a healthy weight and treat pain, stiffness or ear inflammation as a veterinary issue rather than a grooming problem.
