Two olive ridley sea turtles nested on Orange County beaches in September 2026, the first recorded sea-turtle nests of any species on the U.S. West Coast. When forecast surf and tides threatened the nests, officials moved the eggs to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. The eggs’ viability—and whether any will hatch—was unknown when the agencies reported the transfer.
What happened on the Orange County beaches?
NOAA Fisheries reported that the first nest was observed near Seal Beach on September 16, 2026. A second turtle nested near the Huntington Beach Pier three days later, about eight miles away. NOAA biologists identified two individual turtles by comparing photographs of their body shape, barnacle patterns, and shell scutes.
NOAA called the event the first recorded nest for any sea turtle species on the U.S. West Coast. “First recorded” is the careful distinction: the evidence establishes the first documented nests, not that no sea turtle had ever physically nested on the coast before. The report describes the event as unprecedented; two nests alone do not establish a longer-term change or trend. NOAA Fisheries’ event account details the observations and identification.
Why were the eggs moved?
The nests were initially fenced and marked for monitoring. Forecast high surf and tides raised the immediate risk that waves would inundate or erode them. On September 25, officials transferred the eggs to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach to protect them from those conditions. The Los Angeles Times reported that 204 eggs were recovered and transported in coolers packed with sand. The Los Angeles Times report describes the transfer and its rationale.

NOAA said the eggs would receive care through a typical olive ridley incubation period of 45–60 days, with any hatchlings released at the beaches where the eggs were laid. That is a usual incubation window, not a promised hatch date or evidence that the eggs are viable. At the time of the reports, viability was unknown.
Did El Niño cause the turtles to nest in California?
That has not been established. NOAA said the reason the turtles nested in Orange County is uncertain. It identified warm sea-surface temperatures associated with marine heatwaves and the incoming 2027 El Niño as possible influences, while also noting the turtles’ migratory nature and possible navigational error. The Aquarium of the Pacific likewise described multiple possibilities rather than a settled cause. The Aquarium’s account offers its perspective.

There are two separate questions: what conditions may have influenced where the turtles nested, and what threatened the nests after they were laid. The documented reason for the transfer was the forecast risk from surf and tides. More broadly, the California Coastal Commission says El Niño can contribute to stronger storms, larger waves, coastal flooding, and erosion; that general coastal context does not show that El Niño caused the specific storm forecast affecting these nests. Why would olive ridleys be in Southern California?
Olive ridleys are migratory turtles. NOAA says they usually nest in Mexico from about July through December, and the nearest previously known nesting area was in Baja California. A turtle’s appearance this far north is therefore notable, but the available accounts do not determine why these two nested in Orange County.

NOAA says females typically nest two or three times at intervals of about two weeks. Officials were watching for possible additional nesting events, but the two September nests are the recorded observations described in the reports—not proof that further nests occurred.
What should beachgoers do if they see a turtle or nest?
NOAA advises people not to disturb turtles, eggs, hatchlings, nest fencing, or interpretive signs. If you see a sea turtle on a beach, report the sighting through NOAA’s reporting form, call (562) 506-4315, or tell a lifeguard. Keep your distance and leave the area undisturbed so responders can assess it.

Who protects sea turtles and nesting beaches?
NOAA says sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act. It shares U.S. conservation jurisdiction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: NOAA has marine responsibilities, while the Fish and Wildlife Service handles nesting beaches. That division helps explain why agencies and local partners may coordinate when a nest faces a coastal hazard.
